Wigtownshire Free Press (31/5/1917): Mrs Nelson, Falkirk, has received official word of the death of her husband, Private Chas Nelson, RSF, from paralysis, in Alexandra Hospital, Egypt, on 15th inst. Private Nelson was a member of the Stranraer Territorial Force, and was called up for service on the outbreak of war. He was present with his regiment at some of the severest engagements on the Gallipoli Peninsula, and was ultimately severely wounded in that campaign. Private Nelson was also on board the SS Invernia when that vessel was torpedoed in the Mediterranean on 1st January, and was a considerable time in the water before being picked up. Deceased's mother lives in Dalrymple Street, Stranraer, and his father and two broethers are at present on service with the colours.

Wigtownshire Free Press (23/5/1918): Mrs Russell, 53 Dalrymple Street, Stranraer, has received official intimation that her husband, Gunner Thomas Russell, Royal Garrison Artillery, was killed in action in France on March 21st last by a shell splinter. Gunner Russell, who enlisted in October 1916, was over 13 years in the employ of Messrs Hugh Hamilton and Sons, provisions merchants. His Major, in a letter states that Gunner Russell was an excellent soldier, and his loss was keenly felt in his Battery. Mrs Russell's second son, Robert, was killed in France on September 25th 1917, and her eldest son, Peter, was wounded in January of the same year.

Wigtownshire Free Press (23/5/1918): Mrs McKillops, 33 Harbour Street, Stranraer, has received official notice that her son, Private John McKillops, Gordon Highlanders, is reported missing as from April 9. Private McKillops, who enlisted early in 1915, went to France for the third time at the beginning of March. Before enlisting he was employed by Messrs Smith, Dundee Equitable, Inverurie.

Wigtownshire Free Press (19/3/1942): Driver Robert Sproat Ferguson, RASC, son of Mr and Mrs G Ferguson, 18 Broomfield Gardens, has been reported missing while serving in Malaya. He had seen service in France and was in the Dunkirk evacuation. Prior to joining up in November 1939 he was employed by Mr W Dyer, George Street. A brother is serving on a mine sweeper.

SS Almeda Star was a steam passenger ship of the Blue Star Line. She was sunk by U96 on 17 January 1941 35 miles North East of Rockall with the loss of all 360 on board. (Source: uboat.net)

Wigtownshire Free Press (10/5/1917): Mrs Smellie, Princess Street, Stranraer, has received definite intimation that her eldest son, Gunner A K Smellie, Z Battery, TMB, NZFA, was killed in action on the Western Front, on 5th ult, his 19th birthday. Gunner Smellie went to New Zealand about four years ago, and was engaged there for the most part on ranch work. He was well known in Stranraer, and was home on furlough about four months ago. He had developed into a fine young man, generous spirited, and evincing a kindly and manly nature. In the land of his adoption he kept in close touch with home and the loved ones here, and proved himself to be a devoted and considerate son to his mother. He was connected with the OS Church, occupying a place on its Roll of Honour. Deep sympathy is felt for the mother and family during their bereavement. He nobly did his duty with the famous Anzacs, and his memory will be treasured as one more of those who has died for country, God, and right. Rev J Heggie, minister of the OS Church, paid a tribute to Gunner Smellie at the service on Sunday, assuring mother and family of the deep sympathy of the congregartion. Seven members of the church Roll of Honour have been killed.

Wigtownshire Free Press (17/5/1917): Intimation has been received that Quartermaster-Sergeant Andrew Murdoch, KOSB, has been killed in action. Sergt Murdoch, who was a son of Mr William Murdoch, fisherman, Stranraer, was employed in the Lands Valuation Office at Newton Stewart when war broke up. He joined the Territirials when they mobilised, and served in Gallipoli and Egypt. While in Newton Stewart, he took part in the fomation and carrying on of the Newton Stewart Rambling Club, and for his services in connection with it was made the recipient of a presentation. Prior to accenting the situation in the Lands Valuation Office, Sergt Murdoch was for some years in the employment of the PP and W Railway Coy as a clerk at the Newton Stewart and Stranraer Stations.
