Wigtownshire Free Press (26/10/1943): Official news has been received that Engine-Room Artificer Gordon Harper, who was serving with the cruiser HMS Charybdis, has been reported missing, following the action in the English Channel on Saturday morning. During the action HMS Charybdis was torpedoed and sunk, and the destroyer HMS Limbourne was so badly damaged that she had to be sunk by our own forces.

Mr Harper, who is the only son of Dr Harper and of Mrs Harper, Stranraer, joined the Navy over a year ago. Prior to his going on service he was at Newark, Nottinghamshire, where his wife resides. The Admiralty have stated that a number of British survivors were landed in Brittany.

Named on the family gravestone in Stranraer's Glebe Cemetery (researched by Spoons).

Wigtownshire Free Press (14/6/1917): Mr Alex Caughie, joiner, Agnew Crescent, has been officialy informed that his son, Gnr John Caughie, RGA, was killed in action in France on 16th May. Gunner Caughie enlisted shortly after the outbreak of war, and had been on active service. Prior to enlisting he was employed by Mr McCorkell, carting contractor, Stranraer.

Wigtownshire Free Press (22/11/1917): Mrs Russell, Dalrymple Street, Stranraer, has received official intimation that her son, Signaller R Collins, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, was killed in action on the Western front on September 25. Signaller Collins, who served his apprenticeship to the grocery trade with Baillie Collins, Hanover Street, enlisted in June 1916, and prior to that was manager of a grocer's shop in Glasgow. In a letter to his mother the Chaplain states that Signaller Collins was killed instantaneously by shellfire. He and the other sinaller did extraorinarily good work on the 25th, they being the only means of communication, and repeatedly went out through a heavy German barrage. An elder brother, Private Peter Collins, was badly wounder some time ago.

Sadly his brother (with the same name) is also on the memorial, killed in WW2.
