Wigtownshire Free Press (31/8/1917): Mrs McDowall, residing with Mrs McKail, 16 Station Street, Stranraer, has received official intimation from the Admiralty that her son, AB Harry W McDowall, RND, was killed in action in France on 14th August. In a letter, the Chaplain of his Battalion says that death was instantaneous, as a result of a trench mortar thrown by the enemy and that the wounds were chiefly in the legs. He was buried early the following morning at the end of the front trench. Mr McDowall enlisted early in the war, but was rejected owing to his age. In June 1915 he joined the RND and saw good service in the Dardanelles, afterwards being transferred to France. He was invalided home from France at the end of last year suffering from bronchial pneumonia, but recovered from the effects of that, and as again sent to France in the beginning of MAy. He was 20 years of age, and was employed as an apprentice to the butcher trade with Councillor Waddell.

[The report also carries a photograph of AB McDowall]
