Sydney Cairns - his name appears on the Lilliesleaf War Memorial, listed under KOSB.

There is only 1 positive MIC which lists the following service:

King's Own Scottish Borderers 6638 Private

Nil trace on the CWGC website.
Nil trace on SDGW.
Nil trace on SNWM.
There are no deaths in Scotland in any year recorded for a Sydney Cairns - so did he survive the war and then moved country?

Who was he and what was his fate?

I copied the medal roll page for Sydney Cairns while at Kew last weekend. I can't see it helping very much but you are welcome to a copy for your files. The details given are exactly:

The following article stated Sidney Brown Cairns but surely one and the same ?

EVENING TELEGRAPH: 11.10.1915
K.O.S.B. MAN AND THE BICYCLE


Before Sheriff Sym in Perth Sheriff Court this afternoon Sidney Brown Cairns, private 2/4th K.O.S.B., was charged with having, on 4th October from a tent at a camp at Rumbling Bridge, stolen a motor bicycle. It was explained that Cairns stole the bicycle and sold it in Dunfermline for £19. He bought another cycle at £18, also at Dunfermline, and, cycling to Crook o' Devon, he left the machine behind a hedge, where it was recovered. The bicycle which he stole, it was mentioned, had also been traced. He was sent to prison for fourteen days.

He was illegitimate so used his mother's maiden name until she remarried.
