Date of Death: 5/12/1940
Age: 45

Wigtownshire Free Press (30/1/1941) : Among the six members of the crew of HMS Carnarvon Castle killed in an engagement with a German surface raider in the South Atlantic last month was Robert Espie, greaser, son of the late Mr R Espie and of Mrs Espie, 48 Agnew Crescent, Stranraer. The Carnarvon Castle is an armed liner, and she engaged the German vessel at long range, but the enemy ship sheered off and contact was lost.

Robert Espie had been at sea for twenty seven years. During the Great War he served with the Royal Navy, and as one of the crew of HMS Marlborough took part in the battle of Jutland. After the war he entered the merchant service and made many foreign voyages with oil tankers. During the South Atlantic engagement he was in the engine room of the Carnarvon Castle.

The captain, in a letter of sympathy to Mrs Espie said, "Your son displayed great courage and showed coolness and initiative in the face of heavy fire."

John McGivern's Service Record survives and shows that he was a dairyman at Viewbank, Lochans by Stranraer when he enlisted on 17 November 1914 in Edinburgh. He sailed from Southampton on 5 March 1915 and was posted to the 1st Gordon Highlanders in France on 11 March 1915. He was wounded (GSW to thigh) on 7 June 1915 and admitted to 5th General Hospital at Rouen before being evacuated to the Welsh Metropolitan War Hospital at Whitchurch near Cardiff. He was there from 12 June to 10 August 1915. On 11 November 1915 he sailed from Southampton again and was posted to the 2nd Gordons 5 days later.
In August 1919 his relatives were named as, Parents James and Jane McGivern of 19 Glebe Street Stranraer
Brothers David (30) of 41 Murray Street, Maryhill (Glasgow?) Tom (23) of 91 Graham Road Falkirk and James (19) of 19 Glebe Street Stranraer.
Sisters Kate in Pinwherry Ayrshire, Mary in Brechin, Forfar, Annie in Glasgow and Helen at 19 Glebe Street Stranraer.

I cannot find anything on the brothers Davy and Tom but the youngest brother's Service Record also survives and shows that James was an apprentice grocer when he enlisted on 7 March 1918 at Ayr as Private (51997) Royal Scots. He was posted to the 1/8th Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) in France on 7 August as Private (56604). On 15 December 1918 he was admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital in Birmingham and was discharged from the army on 1 April 1919 due to nephritis. He was awarded a Silver War Badge B242580.
