I think we should have a single thread where we can post mails or PMs of thanks and testimonials and I don't think we do (or have I missed it?).

So here's one

From Karen Flanagan concerning George Bell

I want to say a huge thank-you for all your efforts and work in finding out information on George Bell also, in contacting the reporters who were so supportive .
It has all been so important to myself and my mum who is quite overwhelmed by any news.
No news of anywhereabouts of the medals though' you never know !!!

From John Nelson of the Crossmichael Community Council

Since you spoke to us at Crossmichael Community Council we have been involved in other aspects of WW1 commemoration. We helped the primary school research the effects of the Great War – later we encouraged the children to have their own Armistice Day service and I sourced 40 small crosses, each one inscribed with a Crossmichael hero’s name. The children conducted their own service, decorated the church with large poppies, read their own poems, stories and finally each name was read out and a pupil placed a named cross in a large tray of sand. A very moving event and one we intend to repeat each year till ‘18’.

(my talk to them was on how the community may wish to commemorate the centenary of WW1 and they are now also considering placing a second bench at the memorial)

Here's one from a Marcie Graham in Australia re Alex and John Grahame. Alex is named on the family headstone in Stoneykirk Cemetery:

Thank you so much for the information you have provided, it is so very much appreciated. I think I will perhaps start a new search on Ancestry.com based on the extra information I have got from you and see what I come up with. John named three of his children William, Jean and Douglas (my dad) so it seems too much of a coincidence to not look into as it seems I may be on the right track. If I find I still have relatives over there and have made contact I will let you know.

Paul---I don't know what to say, you have found out more about my Dad in two days than I had done in three years.
If there is any way I can repay you, please let me know. Thanks again.
Henry Gibson.

From a member of 'Rootschat' Genealogy Forum:

"Anne,
I'd like to take this chance to thank you and all the people who have worked and contributed to the Scottish War Memorial Project. Fantastic photographs and information, although sad, sad reading. Although I knew my grandfather (WW1) and uncle (WW2) are both listed on the Milnathort Memorial, I didn't know Orwell Parish Church also had a WW1 Roll of Honour, which includes my grandfather, until I found the Memorial Project website."

From Andrew Pugh

Just thought I would let you all know that my evidence for the identification of Thomas Houston has been accepted by the MOD and the process of replacing his old headstone with a new one with his name on it has started.I have also been in contact with his family. I would like to thank everyone who helped with information concerning Thomas Houston.

wow, what a testimonial, we all know how hard you work Anne, but it is great to see it in print.

Can I take this opportunity to encourage others to post whatever thanks they receive whether in the press, in letters or even verbally if it can be quoted.

What a fantastic letter for all your work over the years in getting Camelon's memorial built.

It's very well deserved Anne.

Kind regards

Next project? Laughing

I'm now going back to the beginning and filling out information in a more understandable format in the hope that eventually, a Roll of Honour can be created.

Everything was in 'shorthand' and probably no-one but me would have a clue what anything actually meant!

This will be yet another monumental exercise, but it keeps me out of mischief - I've been working on it for around 2 months and I'm only at letter 'C' so far.

Not on the same scale as some of you but I’m chuffed!

A couple of months ago a lady at church asked me to find out the cemetery where her mother’s elder brother was buried. He had been killed in 1917 and her mother never really knew him. He had a fairly unusual name so it was easy to find and I gave her the information from CWGC and SNWM.
She then asked me which battle he had been killed in; that was trickier as he didn’t seem to be with his own battalion when he was killed so I asked on here and Ken came to my assistance with some suggestions. Key among Ken’s info was the fact that Henry’s service record exists.

Last weekend, UK records on Ancestry were free to search so I downloaded them and emailed them to Jessie with a “crib sheet” of abbreviations and what they mean etc.

This is her reply:
Thank you so much for downloading all these statistics. I could never have done it It has been wonderful finding out so much about him. I now know his height and which Clydebank railway station he worked at. I have seen his signature and how much money he had. This has made him more real to me. I wish my Mother had seen these details

I will study the emails again and again.

I am very grateful. Thank you very much
