Hello folks! Firstly as a newbie from south of the border I must congratulate on a great site! - I know what a task this is as I have 26K+ entries on memorials from my native Norfolk in England.
I'm trying to locate any memorials to 504 Pte Andrew Stephen Ledingham who was killed with the 2nd Gordon Highlanders 29th October 1914 aged 21.
He was born, I believe, either in Ardiffery, a parish of Cruden, or New Machar and at his death his mother was living at Peterhead but I can not find him recorded on these memorials (unless I've missed him!). Not knowing the local area, or indeed how to search this site properly, I don't know where to look next. His mother took the trouble to have a personal inscription added to his headstone so I would assume he would be commemorated back home somewhere.
Would one of you guys be able to point me in the right direction on finding anything more about this guy please.

Wow, that's quite an effort. You must have recorded a fair few Norfolk memorials to get that number. Have you published any of it online?

Anne Park is our Aberdeenshire expert. If he is commemorated in the North-east I'm sure Anne will have come across his name.

Is that his CWGC headstone you mean or do you know of an inscription on a private headstone?

Thanks

Adam

Hi Adam thanks for the quick reply.

re the Norfolk memorials - I just visited villages and photographed whatever memorials they had, entered them onto an excel spreadsheet and tried to identify the name recorded i.e. CWGC & SDGW details. Never published as not all are identified - just sitting on a huge excel spreadsheet (and I wouldn't know how to!)

re Andrew Stephen Ledingham - I'm hoping Anne can help!.
The inscription I refer to is from the Imperial War Graves Commission where they invited (if the next of kin could afford it) additional personal inscriptions to be recorded alongside the original military inscription marking the soldiers grave.

Welcome, I may be wrong but I don't think he is listed on any memorial that we currently have on the project.

He is of course listed on the Scottish National War Memorial (online and at Edinburgh Castle) https://www.snwm.org/content/roll-search/?id=949537&searchid=40ec61853526bbbe94e0cf64a5c8352c&page=1

Andrew Stephen was born 27 December 1892 at Ardiffery in Cruden Parish, Aberdeenshire. Father Alexander (Farm Servant) Mother Margaret Cruden, married 1876 October 12th at Savock.

I think this is probably Ardiffery Mains between Hatton and Cruden Bay.

I suspect that it is him on the 1911 census at the barracks in Colchester.

Thanks all for your replies and info.

Yes Ken - he was at Colchester barracks in 1911 along with his brother David (also serving with the Gordon Highlanders)
