That's a very busy window. Have you any close-ups?

D&G Standard 6/2/1918 p.2

The Birney window, which is placed in the west gable of the nave, is composed of nine panels. Of the three principal panels, which occupy the centre of the window, the centre one shows Abraham leaving Ur of the Chaldees; the left Abraham being visited by the three angels; and the right Jacob wrestling with the angel.
The left hand panel of the bottom row depicts Jacob and Joseph meeting in Egypt; the centre, Eliazar meeting Rebecca at the well and receiving a drink from her; and the right hand, Abraham sacrificing Isaac.
In the top row of panels the left hand figure is that of the archangel Gabriel, the angel of peace and mercy; the centre depicts Jacob's dream, with the angels soaring towards heaven, and the hand of God reaching down; and on the right is the figure of the archangel Michael , the angel of war and strife.
One side of the window is symbolic of struggle and sorrow and the other side of peace.

I was wondering if ancient Ur was near Kut. It wasn't. Ur is now known as Tell el-Muqayyar. It is in a different province of the modern state of Iraq.

Thanks

Adam - John Gordon Birney was the laird of Redcastle in the Parish of Urr.
I guess they just couldn't resist the near coincidence?

John Gordon Birney – age 19 – Lieutenant: 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
John was the Laird of Redcastle Estate, in the parish of Urr. He was educated at Temple Grove School, at Winchester College from 1911 and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst from April 1915 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the HLI in September 1915. He joined his battalion in March 1916 but was invalided to India. John returned in late 1916, was promoted on 1 January 1917 and was killed near Kut al Amara.
Born 1898 at Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Son of Sarah Duncuft (Worthington) Birney of Killarney, Culverden Down, Tunbridge Wells, Kent and of Sandes Soldier's Home, Meerut, India, and of the late Lieutenant John Ramsay Birney.
God-son of Colonel John Birney of Redcastle, Haugh of Urr.
Killed in Action on 11 January 1917 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
Also named on the Urr Parish War Memorial in Haugh of Urr village and on the Winchester College War Memorial.
With John's death the estate passed to his uncle Lt. Colonel Charles Folliot Birney, Royal Engineers whose own son, David, died in WW2 and is also remembered on the Parish memorial.

Ken

Yes, I think you are right with the Urr/ Ur connection.

Cheers
