Looking at the Dreghorn memorial ( http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=576&highlight=dreghorn ) I spotted a couple of unusual names which I tried searching for on cwgc.org. One of them couldn't be found at all; this was Ernest Angelini.

Could it be that he died in training? Or of wounds after the war? Or considering his name, perhaps he was of Italian extraction and died fighting in their army?

Any ideas?

Cheers

It appears he died prior to 1918. Am checking further.

Update
No details of this man's death found.
A child died in May 1918 at Dreghorn with the father listed as Ernest Angelini, ice cream merchant ( deceased) who I suspect is the same person. Being of " foreign " origin, and probably an Italian national, he may have enlisted under an alias. He might also have joined the Italian army.

Did anything come of this? Does anyone know of an Italian equivalent of the CWGC?

Thanks

There is, it's here: http://www.difesa.it/Il_Ministro/CadutiInGuerra/Pagine/default.aspx

You can search the database, and it links to pages from some form of Memorial Roll. Unfortunately it's in Italian (obviously) but it seems to give a date (or at least a year) of birth as well as a place, plus a date of death and also cause of death.

There are no entries for Ernest Angelini, but several for Ernesto Angelinin. However, without further information there's no way of identifying if any of these are the correct man.

The Italian database gives the following details for the Ernesto Angelinis

Name Date of Birth Born Rank Unit Cause of death Died Place of Death

ANGELINI ERNESTO 30/11/1892 Genzano di Roma Marinaio Rome Legion Died of wounds 21/08/1916 Sagrado

ANGELINI ERNESTO DI PRIMO 27/5/1889 Assisi Soldato 152nd Infantry Regt Died of wounds 14/11/1915 Monte San Michele

ANGELINI ERNESTO DI SALVATORE 25/2/1893 Rimini Carabiniere a piedi Corpo Reali Equipaggi di Marina Died of disease 17/10/1918 Port of Rimini

ANGELINI ERNESTO DI SAMUELE 1/1/1882 Stazzema Soldato Artillery Depot Died of disease 28/03/1918 Lucca

ANGELINI ERNESTO STEFANO DI CARLO 16/08/1893 Agosto Caporale 141st Infantry Regt Died of wounds 09/11/1916 Carso

If he was already dead by the time his son died in May 1918 then that rules out the sailor from the Royal Italian Navy. So assuming he was serving in the Italian Forces it narrows the possible names as

ANGELINI ERNESTO DI PRIMO Died of wounds 14/11/1915 Monte San Michele
ANGELINI ERNESTO Died of wounds 21/08/1916 Sagrado
ANGELINI ERNESTO STEFANO DI CARLO Died of wounds 09/11/1916 Carso
ANGELINI ERNESTO DI SAMUELE Died of disease 28/03/1918 Lucca

Local Ayrshire newspapers from around those dates may mention his death.

Of course if I'd just looked up the Dreghorn thread I would have found this

govangirl wrote:
The Irvine Herald on Friday 14th December 1917 contained the following annnouncement in the "Dreghorn" section
"Information has been recieved of the death in Italy of Pte Ernest Angelini. Deceased, who carried on an ice-cream business in the village, enlisted in June 1916, and has been with the Italian troops in the recent fighting. He leaves a widow and five children"

Ernesta is commemorated on the family grave in Dreghorn Cemetery
"In loving memory of Ernesta Angelini who was accidentlally killed in Italy 21st Nov 1917 aged 38"

Kilmarnock Standard 22 December 1917
"AN ITALIAN KILLED
PRIVATE ERNESTO ANGELINI, DREGHORN
Mrs F Angelini, Dreghorn, has been officially informed of the death of her husband, Private Ernesto Angelini. He had been fighting with the Italian troops since July, 1916. The deceased was well known and highly respected in Dreghorn and district, having been resident in the village for fully five years. Always ready and willing to help in matters relating to the welfare of the village, he was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He leaves a widow and five young children to mourn his loss."

Of course now that we know who Ernest Angelini was it turns out he may be a non-comm on the Italian database!

Anyone speak Italian?
