St Mary Immaculate War Memorial Inscription
UKNIWM 54366

The memorial is situated in the churchyard of St Mary Immaculate, a Roman Catholic Church, 150 Shawhill Road, Polllockshaws, Glasgow G43 1SY

Parish – Eastwood
District – City of Glasgow
Region – Strathclyde

Grid Ref: NS 565616

The memorial is made of blonde sandstone and comprises a rectangular block on front of which is listed the names of the fallen. This is about 2 to 3m long by 1m high. Above this block, there is a metal sculpture of Christ on the cross flanked to the left by a standing woman and to the left by a standing man. I think the standing figures are just slightly less than lifesize, although Christ is lifesize. The sandstone memorial forms two columns and then an arch over this trio of sculptures. On the left hand arch is the Greek symbol ‘alpha’ and on the right hand arch the symbol ‘omega’. At the apex of the arch is a dove, directly above the cross. The memorial also forms a wall behind the statuary apart from the arms and apex of the cross, which are open. Above the archway is inscribed WAR 1914 – 1918 PEACE. Overall size of the memorial is about 4 to 5m high by 2 to 3m wide and 1 to 2m deep.

I have been researching the names on this memorial and hope to post information on a fair proportion of them over the coming weeks. At the time of the Great War, St. Mary's parish covered much more than just Pollokshaws, so while a number of the names on the memorial are also to be found on the Pollokshaws memorial at the burgh hall, there are others on the Thornliebank memorial, as well as names from surrounding areas like Shawlands, Langside, Clarkston, etc. Other names may be relatives of people in the parish, rather than actual parishioners

2 of 5 remaining names in first column of memorial

Alexr. Anderson and Edward Anderson

Pollokshaws Memorial has

Pollokshaws Parish Church Memorial has

Pte James Bennett

A soldier of this name

http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/665960/BENNETT,%20J

is commemorated in the small garden of remembrance in Eastwood (New) Cemetery where servicemen from both wars buried in Glasgow's Sighthill and Southern Necropolis Cemeteries are commemorated. The memorial consists of headstones removed from the actual graves, which could no longer be properly maintained when the cemeteries closed in March 1954. However there is no apparent link with the Pollokshaws area at the time of the Great War.

Pte. Martin Carter - no match found, although his name also appears on the Pollokshaws Memorial.

After leaving St Conval’s Elementary School, Pollokshaws, he proceeded to St Aloysius College, Garnethill, where he passed with distinction. Gaining a University bursary from there, he graduated at Gilmorehill, taking the arts course. He then passed to Balliol College, Oxford, and from that joined the Inns of Court Officers Training Corps, London, in 1915. Early the following year, he received his commission, and proceeded to the front, where he saw a great deal of active service.
