That's unusual for a church memorial to give so much detail. Usually they only give names. If only they all had so much information!

Thanks

Kirkintilloch Herald Wednesday 26 May 1915
PRiVATE A. G. MOORE
Mr & Mrs Moore, Woodilee Cottages, Lenzie, received on Thursday night official notice per telegram that their eldest son Andrew George, had died of wounds received in action. A previous notification was so vague in its wording that the young man's parents were quite unprepared for the sudden blow. Private Moore was in the 10th Battalion of the Canadian Contingent. He was born and brought up on the Woodilee estate....................

BUT - I cannot find him on any military record!

That is very interesting. Especially since it's the name with no details. He should at least have CEF attestation papers.

I can't find military info on either of the Canadians, but I've got loads to post on everyone else as well as close ups, a couple of individual memorials and the WW2 one, but until my mouse button will co-operate and play 'copy and past', they'll have to wait until I treat myself to a new mouse.

I was thinking that the Canadians perhaps served under an alias but if the Moores got official notice then the CWGC would know they were the NoK and reflect that on their database.

I've taken a cut of the GWGC database for all Canadian soldiers between 1.1.15 - before the CEF were in action, and 26.5.15 - when the newspaper article was published, and I found this man

MOORE, GEORGE WASHINGTON
Rank: Private
Service No: 19898
Date of Death:25/04/1915
Age:27
Regiment/Service: Canadian Infantry 10th Bn.
Grave Reference: II. K. 3.
Cemetery: POPERINGHE OLD MILITARY CEMETERY
Additional Information: Son of William Alexander Moore. Born in Scotland.

I looked up his attestation papers and it is the same A G Moore from the newspaper:

http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/first-world-war-1914-1918-cef/Pages/image.aspx?Image=502026a&URLjpg=http%3a%2f%2fdata2.archives.ca%2fcef%2fgpc011%2f502026a.gif&

His burial in Poperinghe Old Cemetery ties in with him dying of wounds as the cemetery was used for deaths at casualty clearing centres.

A.G., G.W. or G.A.W?

The church and paper both use A.G. which suggests he preferred to be known as Andrew to those who knew him.

On to the other CEF man now. If Corporal William Grant died in Canada in 1917 perhaps he is a non-comm?

Corporal William Grant

25th Vic. Canadns

Niagra Falls 27.12.1917

I cannot identify the unit listed. It may be one of the many Militia regiments in Canada at the time like our rifle volunteers. I cannot find a simple thing like a list of pre-1914 Militia regiments (rather than post-1914 CEF battalions which is available)

There was a military camp at Niagra which may be the reason Corporal Grant was there in December 1917.

Thanks to a researcher on the GWF:
William Grant died on 28 December 1917 of pulmonary tuberculosis at home 427 Victoria Avenue, Niagara Falls, Welland, Ontario. He was 26, born Lenzie and married. Father William. Mother Jane Campbell. Wife - no details.
Occupation confectioner.

From that I was able to identify him as Private 142729, born Lenzie 10 June 1891 and a marine engineer. Next of Kin Wm Grant of Lenzie, Glasgow.
Served in the 44th Regiment of Militia.
Enlisted 27 July 1915 at Welland but discharged as medically unfit on 21 August 1915.

The death record indicates ill for 1 year so no obvious link to his military service and so not a non-comm.
There is a variation is the occupation details but I'm sure it's the same man.
