"Despite a strong initial showing from the Scottish team, within ten minutes they had conceded an own goal. The English team took the initiative, and by half time the English ladies were up three – nil. The final score line was England 4, Scotland 0."

Thanks Ken. I didn't know the Forge was the site of a munitions factory and it made the steel plates and guns for the Hood.
Thanks for such an interesting off-topic post.
Cheers

Adam - there's some interesting background on this vast site here:
http://parkheadhistory.com/?page_id=4540
It contains another football related story - that one of the football teams under the Beardmore's umbrella was the works side from motor vehicle manufacturers Arrol Johnston at Dumfries, and in 1919 they merged with two other teams, Dumfries F.C. and 5th Kirkcudbrightshire Rifle Volunteers F.C., and they went on to form Queen of the South F.C.
(I never knew that!)
I do remember travelling by tram into Glasgow down Duke Street from Parkhead Cross and being held up at one of the level crossings used by the factory's internal rail system to move enormous white-hot ingots from one part of the site to the other. _________________ Ken |

Thanks Ken, that's fascinating reading. Health and Safety wouldn't let that happen now!
