Spittal War Memorial, Northumberland
OS Ref: NU 008 512

Although this memorial doesn't really fall within the scope of this forum because most of the names litsed are also on the main Berwick Memorial I think it should be included here. Like the Berwick memorial it only lists the Great War names.

The memorial is situated in gardens on the seafront at the South end of Spittal.

I'd appreciate it if someone can provide better images of the memorial and the plaques for the forum. the original photograph shows the names more clearly and if anyone wants a copy I can send it to them.

Back to Berwick Barracks. A better reception this time and some photos to follow. The gates are, indeed, a memorial but it is sad that the plaques, which made sense of the gates, have been removed and are now indoors ina 'shrine'.

The 1914-18 plaque:

An ornate bronze and wood frame for a 'Dead Man's Penny'. This one contains the plaque for Dick Jackson. Presumably Pte Dick Jackson, 8th Bn, who was killed on 18/9.16 aged 31. Buried at Heilly Station Cemetery.

Not a note about the unveiling but a notice of the committee approving Carrick's design.

From 'The Scotsman' of Friday, 11th February 1921. On page 7

Berwick

The War Memorial Committee have approved of the model submitted by their sculptor, Mr Carrick, for a war memorial to the fallen in the borough. The memorial will consist of an upright winged figure in bronze, holding a laurel wreath in both hands, and it stands on a pedestal about 4 feet square approached by steps. The total height of the memorial will be 22 feet
