PTE. ROBERT JAS. CLARK, GORDON HIGH

Robert James Clark – age 20 – Private (14026 ) 1/6th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Robert was a temporary postman and was a joiner who worked with his father. He enlisted in January 1916, joined his battalion in France in July and served at Ancre and the Somme.
Born 1896 in Kells Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Hugh and Esther Sarah (Martin) Clark of Dalry.
Killed in Action on 1 November 1916 and buried in Auchonvillers Military Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Roll of Honour in Castle Douglas Post Office.


PTE. ALEXANDER CLEMENT, K.O.S.B.
Alexander Clement – age 20 – Private (1823) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander enlisted in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He died of wounds on the Hospital Ship “Devanha” and was buried at sea.
Born 1895 in Dalry. Son of John McKay Clement and of Margaret Geddes (Hamilton) Clement of Ivy Cottage, Dalry.
Died of Wounds on 24 December 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. DAVID JOHN COLTART, LANARK YEO.
David John Coltart – age 25 – Private (1107) 1/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
David was educated in Dalry and had been employed for seven years as a grocer with his uncle David Kinnell in Thornhill, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in May 1915. He landed with his regiment, as dismounted troops, at Gallipoli in October 1915 and was killed a month later.
Born 1889 in Dalry. Son of William and Catherine (Kinnell) Coltart of Milton of Earlstown, Dalry and of 34 West Morton Street, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 17 November 1915 and buried in Pink Farm Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Morton Parish War Memorial in Thornhill, Dumfriesshire.


PTE. DAVID CUTHBERTSON, CAMERON HIGH.
David Cuthbertson – age 34 – Private (S/22255) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
David enlisted in March 1916.
Born 1882 in Kells Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of David and Mary Ann (Kirk) Cuthbertson of Dalry.
Killed in Action on 7 April 1917 and buried in Faubourg D'amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.

PTE. WILLIAM DICKSON, R.A.M.C.
William Dickson – age 32 – Private (29718) 13th Company Royal Army Medical Corps.
William was a motor man with the Glasgow Corporation Tramways and was living with his family at 59 Roebank Street, Dennistoun, Glasgow when he enlisted in the Home Hospital Reserve in March 1915. He was Ward Master at the Maryhill Auxiliary Military Hospital in Glasgow. He was discharged from the army due to illness in May 1916 and awarded a Silver War Badge (39183) William died of tuberculosis at Craigview, Carsphairn, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Born 1885 in Dalry. Son of William Findlay Dickson and of Jane (Bell) Dickson of Stroanpatrick, Dalry. Husband of Mary (McMillan) Dickson of Carsphairn who he married in 1913 in Carsphairn.
Died on 26 August 1917 and buried in Carsphairn Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Carsphairn Parish War Memorial and on the Glasgow Corporation Tramways Dennistoun Depot Memorial now in the Parkhead Depot.
No 13 Company, RAMC was a pre-war unit based in Scotland with its headquarters at Edinburgh and those joining it during the war probably reinforced local military or civilian hospitals.


PTE. ANDREW DOYLE, M.M. H.L.I.
Andrew Doyle, Military Medal – age 21 – Private (18823) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Andrew was an apprentice baker when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915. Andrew was awarded a M.M. for his actions on 5, 10 and 11 April 1917.
Born 1896 in Dalry. Son of Thomas and Jessie (Ferguson) Doyle of Kirkland Street, Dalry.
Missing in Action on 25 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


SPR. GEORGE FERGUSON, R.E
.
George Ferguson – age 22 – Sapper ( 269009) 96th Light Railway Operating Company, Royal Engineers.
George was a postman and the greenkeeper at Dalry Golf and Bowling clubs when he enlisted in June 1917. He was onboard the Troopship “Aragon”, which had sailed from Marseilles and was waiting to enter Alexandria harbour, when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UC-34. George and 28 others of the 96th LROC were drowned.
Born 1895 in Dalry. Son of Oswald and Elizabeth (McLauchlan) Ferguson of Kirkland Street, Dalry. Husband of Maria (Vanderwal) Ferguson of Broomhall, Partick in Glasgow who he married in 1916 in Partick. (later Maria St. Martin-Vanderwal of 30 Rue Courte, Ostend, Belgium)
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 30 December 1917 and named on the Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

PTE. WILLM. GALLOWAY, CAMERON HIGH.
William Galloway – age 27 – Private (S/13372) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
William was a shepherd at Carlae when enlisted in September 1914 and he was posted to the 2nd Camerons in France in April 1915. Five days later he was wounded and was treated at the Canadian Hospital at Wimereux. He returned to his battalion in May but was wounded again ten days later and was treated at the 8th Stationary Hospital before being evacuated to England. He returned to France and joined the 5th Camerons in June 1916 but was killed four months later on the Somme.
Born 1890 at Craigshinnie in Kells Parish. Son of Robert and Margaret Galloway of Kells, of Carroch Farm, Dalry and of Blackmark Farm, Dalry.
Missing in Action on 17 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


PTE. JAMES GOOD, KINGS L'PL. REGT.
James Good – age 28 – Private (22695) 20th Battalion (4th City) The King's (Liverpool Regiment)
1911 James 23 was a warehouseman in a biscuit factory and was living with his aunt Agnes Clint in Toxteth Park in Liverpool. He was a clerk and was living with his sister at 31 Kinmell Street, Liverpool when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in November 1915.
Born 1887 in Dalry as James Good or Finlay. Son of Allan Finlay. Son of the late Christina (Good) McKie and step-son of the late Peter McKie of Dalry.
Brother of Alexander Good of 46 Egerton Street, Liverpool and of Elizabeth Good, wife of William Charles Wright, of 31 Kinmell Street, Liverpool.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


LCPL. GEORGE HAMILTON, H.L.I.
George Hamilton – age 34 – Lance Corporal (17840) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
George enlisted in September 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915. He was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1882 in Dalry. Son of Mary Hamilton. Husband of Frances Nelson (McLeod) Hamilton of Front Street, Dalry who he married in 1913 in Dalry.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

William Kerr – age 24 – Private (79089) 50th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps.
William had been employed by Major McCall of Caitloch, Moniaive and was a shepherd at Barbuie, Moniaive when he enlisted in November 1915.
He joined his unit in France in January 1916.
Born 1894 in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire. Son of Thomas and Agnes (Henderson) Kerr of Holmhead on the Dalry/Moniaive border.
Died of Wounds on 26 August 1918 and buried in Shrine Cemetery, Bucquoy, France.
Also named on the Glencairn Parish War Memorials in Moniaive, Dumfriesshire.


PTE. ARCHIBALD MAIR, CAMERON HIGH.
Archibald Mair – age 23 – Private (S/13411) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Archibald, formerly of Gordonston, Dalry, was an electrical engineer in Glasgow when enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born in 1892 in Dalry. Son of the late Elizabeth (Martin) Mair of Gordonston, Dalry and of William Mair of Craigbrae, Drongan, Ayrshire.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Ochiltree Parish War Memorial in Ayrshire.

PTE. JOHN MARTIN, K.S.L.I.
John Martin – age 23 – Private (24084) 5th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
In 1911 John, aged 17, was assisting his father as a pisciculturist (or fish farmer) at Shropshire Fisheries in Cleobury North in Shropshire.
He enlisted in March 1916.
Born 1893 in Dalry. Son of the late Joseph Martin and of Mary (Hamilton) Martin of Allangibbon Bridge, Dalry, of Cleobury North near Bridgenorth, Shropshire and of 2 Stanley Terrace, Higher Heysham, Morecambe, Lancashire.
Killed in Action on 18 March 1917 and buried in Faubourg D'amiens Cemetery, Arras. France.
Also named on the Cleobury North War Memorial in Shropshire.


PTE. THOMAS R. MILNE, LANARK YEO.
Thomas Rankin Milne – age 34 – Private ( 295938) 12th (Ayr and Lanark) Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Thomas was employed as a gamekeeper to Mr. Forbes at Earlston, Dalry and lived at Barlae House when he enlisted in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry. The regiment merged with the Ayrshire Yeomanry in Egypt to form the 12th (Ayr and Lanark) Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers on 4 January 1917.
Born 1883 South Shields, County Durham. Son of the late Elizabeth (Dickie) Milne and of David Stephen Milne of Pitfour, Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire.
Husband of Janet (Smith) Milne of Coltness Mains, Wishaw, Lanarkshire who he married in 1907 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire.
Died of Wounds on 6 May 1917 and buried in Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Cambusnethan Parish Church memorial and on the Cambusnethan Parish War Memorial in Newmains, Lanarkshire.


PTE. ALEXANDER P. McCULLOCH, K.O.S.B.
Alexander Paterson McCulloch – age 31 – Private (17313) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander was a dyking contractor when he enlisted in November 1914. He was well known throughout the Stewartry and Ayrshire as a golfer and footballer. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1885 in Dalry. Son of Walter and Agnes (Shannon) McCulloch of Courthill, Dalry.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

PTE. JOSEPH McCULLOCH, CAMERON HIGH.
Joseph Mcculloch – age 19 – Private (S/13566) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Joe was a farm servant at Midtown, Dalry when he enlisted in September 1914. He was posted to the 1st Camerons in France in January 1915 but was wounded in May 1915. He was treated at the 13th General Hospital in Boulogne and evacuated to hospital in England. He returned to France and was posted to the 5th Camerons on 1 March 1916.
Born 1896 in Dalry as Joseph Walls McCulloch. Elizabeth McCulloch of Midtown and of Main Street, Dalry.
Missing in Action on 14 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


PTE. ARCHIBALD McINTYRE, CAMERON HIGH.
Archibald Mcintyre – age 19 – Private (S/20990) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Archie was working at Grennan Dairy in Dalry when he enlisted in September 1915. He joined his battalion in France in February 1916.
Born 1897 in Kirkoswald, Ayrshire. Son of Duncan and Ellen or Helen (Sloss) McIntyre of Grennan Dairy, Dalry and of Howell Dairy, Kirkcudbright.
Missing in Action on 13 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


PTE. JAMES McLEOD, K.O.S.B

James McLeod – age 22 – Private (12274) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James enlisted in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne on 12 May 1915. He was serving with the battalion's machine gun section when he was killed two months later.
Born 1893 in Coatbridge, Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. Son of the late William McLeod of Calder, Coatbridge and of Annie (Clement) Mcleod of Kirkland Street, Dalry. Both were born in Dalry. His brother William was named as his legatee.
Killed in Action on 10 July 1915 and buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-L'Avoue, France.


PTE. ANDREW McNAUGHT, K.O.S.B.
Andrew McNaught – age 19 – Private (17309) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a shepherd at Muirdrockwood, Carsphairn, Kirkcudbrightshire when he enlisted in December 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1896 in Duns, Berwickshire as Andrew Thomas McNaught. Son of Robert McNaught and Agnes Annie Fleet (Johnston) McNaught of Midtown, Dalry.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

PTE. ALEXANDER NEILSON, CANADIANS.
Served as Alexander Nelson.
Alexander Nelson – age 21 – Private (A/40764 or 440764) 5th Battalion (Western Cavalry), Canadian Infantry.
On the 1901 census, Alex. Neilson, age 5 and born in Kells, was living as a boarder at 18 Back Street in Dalry and in 1911 he was a ploughman at Chapelcroft Farm, Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire. He had been educated at the Dalbeattie Higher Grade Public School and he emigrated to Canada in about 1913. He was working as a teamster and was a member of the local militia when he enlisted at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in January 1915. He sailed from Montreal in June 1915 and was posted to the 5th Battalion in France in August 1915. He served at Armentieres and Ypres.
Born 1 July 1895 at Waterside, Kells, Kirkcudbrightshire as Neilson.
(Note: His service record has 1/7/1895 in Dalbeatte)
Son of Elizabeth Neilson of Hawthorn Place, Southwick Road, Dalbeattie. She died there in 1919. Grandson of Mrs. Nelson of Hawthorn Place, Dalbeattie. Killed in Action on 2 June 1916 and buried in Larch Wood (Railway Cutting) Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.
Also named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial, on the Dalbeattie School memorial and on the Royal British Legion Roll of Honour now in Dalbeattie Parish Church.


PTE. WILLIAM ROBERTSON, H.L.I.
William David Robertson – age 22 – Private (17968) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
William enlisted in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915. He was wounded in April 1917 and evacuated to the Cambridge Military Hospital in Aldershot where he died.
Born 1895 in Dalry. Son of the late Eliza Jane (Kirk) Robertson and of James Robertson, farm manager at Blawquhairn Farm, Dalry, and of Ivy Cottage, Balmaclellan, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died of Wounds on 5 July 1917 and buried in Dalry Parish Churchyard.


PTE. ALFRED G. TAIT, K.O.S.B.
Alfred Galloway Tait – age 25 – Private (17312) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alfred had served his apprenticeship as a painter with his brother John in Dalry. He enlisted in December 1914 and landed with the 7th KOSB at Boulogne in July 1915. He was wounded at Loos in September 1915 and was killed by the explosion of an enemy mine near Hulluch.
Born 1891 in Dalry, his birth was also registered in Kells Parish. Son of the late John and Margaret (Straiton) Tait of Dalry.
Missing in Action on 9 July 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

PTE. JAMES TAIT, A.& S.H.
James Tait – age 22 – Private (S/7621) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James was a shepherd at Knockauchley Farm in Moniaive, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in January 1915. He joined his battalion in France on 2 October 1915 and served at the Hohenzollern Redoubt and at Vermelles where he was wounded. He was killed by a rifle grenade.
Born 1893 in Kells Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Ann (Clark) Tait of Knocksting Farm, Dalry.
Missing in Action on 25 November 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Glencairn Parish War Memorials in Moniaive.


FARRIER GEORGE H. THOMPSON, R.A.S.C.
Note: Military records use Thomson. Scottish civil record have Thompson.
George Henry Thomson – age 28 – Driver/Farrier (T/293058) Horse Transport, Army Service Corps
George was a farm servant living at Kirkland Street, Dalry when he enlisted as Private (2014) in the Ayrshire Yeomanry Reserve in November 1914. He was appointed a shoeing smith in March 1915 and he was transferred to the 64th Highland Division Train, A.S.C. in October 1915 and then as a Farrier Corporal to the 3/1st Highland Field Ambulance, R.A.M.C. in the same Division. (The 64th Division were based in Norfolk from March 1916) He was posted as Driver Farrier to the Depot at Woolwich in October 1918 but was admitted to Norwich Military Hospital while on leave and died of influenza and pneumonia.
Born 1889 in Dalry. Son of the late John Thompson and of Margaret (Wilson) Thomson of Kirkland Street, Dalry. Husband of Kate Ellen Maud (Cator) Thomson of Common Road Farm, Forncett St. Peter, Long Stratton, Norfolk who he married in February 1917 at Long Stratton, Depwade, Norfolk.
Died on Service on 10 November 1918 and buried in Forncett St. Peter (SS. Peter And Paul) Churchyard, Norfolk. (CWG)
Also named on the Forncett St. Peter Parish War Memorial in Norfolk.
His nephew, John Thomson, was killed in action on 7 December 1943 and is named on this memorial.


PTE. THOMAS B. WILSON, K.O.S.B.
Thomas Bryden Wilson – age 22 – Private (16379) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Tom enlisted in September, 1914 and joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in August 1915. During his service he was wounded twice and was posted to the 7th/8th Battalion and then the 6th KOSB. Tom had been back at the front for only a few weeks when he was fatally wounded and died in the 3rd Australian General Hospital in Abbeville.
Born 1895 in Kells Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Thomas Wilson and of Jane (Bryden) Wilson, (later Jardine) and step-son of John Jardine of Main Street, Dalry.
Died of Wounds on 27 September 1917 and buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

Robert Ferguson – age 31 – Sergeant (3190462) “C” Company, No.12 Platoon, 7th (Airborne) Battalion (Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers, 1st Airlanding Brigade, 1st Airborne Division.
Born 1913 in Dalry. Son of William and Margaret (Milligan) Ferguson of Kirkland Street, Dalry. Husband of Mary Ferguson of 2 Auckland Terrace, Dalry.
Missing in Action between 20 and 21 September 1944 and named on the Groesbeek Memorial, Gelderland, Netherlands
His brother Lance Sergeant John Ferguson was captured at Arnhem.

The first of the Horsa gliders carrying the 7th Battalion KOSB landed at Arnhem on the first day of the battle, Sunday 17 September 1944, to secure the Ginkel Heath position, designated as DZ-Y for the 4th Parachute Brigade. By 25 September the battalion were defending the perimeter near Oosterbeek Hoog Railway Station and that night the survivors were withdrawn to cross back over the Rhine.


SGT. JAMES HOWATSON, R.A.F.
James Howatson – age 23 – Sergeant (981103) 40 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
James enlisted in March 1940 and was a wireless operator/air gunner.
Born 1920 in Carsphairn, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Francis and Elizabeth Howatson of Lowe Cleugh Farm, Dalry.
Missing in Action on 8 July 1943 and named on the Malta Memorial, Malta.

In October 1941 40 Squadron's Wellington bombers were flown to Malta, where they operated against targets in Italy and North Africa until May 1942, when the surviving aircraft were transferred to Egypt. It began to fly operations against the Axis forces in North Africa, moving west as the Allies advanced into Tunisia and in July 1943 they were based at the airfield at Hani West in Tunisia flying against targets in Sicily and Italy.


PTE. HARRY KIRK, BLACK WATCH.
Harry Kirk – age 26 – Private (3133555) 5th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Harry served in Africa and at the invasions of Sicily and Italy before landing at Normandy on D-day. He was wounded twice while fighting through France and Holland and into Germany. He died in the 64th British Military Hospital in Celle, north of Hanover.
Born 1919 in Dalry. Son of William and Grace (Bryden) Kirk of Borgue Cottage, Dalry.
Died on Active Service on 6 May 1945 and buried in Celle War Cemetery, Germany .

Thomas Bryden Kirk – age 30 – Sergeant (1941851) 114 Road Construction Company, Royal Engineers.
Thomas was a foreman joiner in Bath when he enlisted in October 1940. He was killed in an accident in Burma and buried in Yazagyo Military Cemetery but was re-interred in Imphal in June 1945.
Born 1914 in Dalry. Son of William and Grace (Bryden) Kirk of Borgue Cottage, Dalry. Husband of Freda Dorothy (Harah) Kirk, of 15 Church Street, Driffield, Yorkshire who he married in 1939 in Driffield, Buckrose, East Riding of Yorkshire.
Died on Active Service on 25 March 1945 and buried in Imphal War Cemetery, India.
Also named on the Driffield War Memorial in Yorkshire.
Another brother, Robert Kirk of the Royal Army Medical Corps, was captured in June 1940 and was a Prisoner of War for five years before being repatriated in May 1945.

PTE. ROBERT LITTLE, R.A.S.C.
Robert Little – age 21 – Private (230525) Royal Army Service Corps.
“Bobbie” was killed during an air-raid at Beacon Barracks, Salisbury, Wiltshire.
Born c.1920 in Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Robert Maxwell Little and of Margaret (Kilpatrick) Little of Smithy House, Dalry.
Killed by enemy action on 14 March 1941 and buried in Dalry Parish Churchyard. (CWG)


CPL. ANDREW LEITCH, R.A.F.
Andrew Leitch – age 33 – Corporal (1556919) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Andrew was previously employed at the Galloway Water Power Company, Kendoon Reservoir in Dalry parish. He was killed in a Lancaster of 550 Squadron, which was being used on repatriation flights from Italy, when it crashed at Pomigliano near Naples.
Born 1912 in Johnstone, Renfrewshire. Son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Martin) Leitch of Glenlochar Farm, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire. Husband of Mary Stewart (Hutton) Leitch, of Parkgate, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1935 at Corsock Bridge, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died on Service on 6 October 1945 and buried in Naples War Cemetery, Italy.


CPL. GEORGE V. B. PENMAN, R.A.F.
George Verdun Bell Penman – age 26 – Corporal (970589) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
George was made a prisoner of war on Java. He was one of many prisoners taken to the island of Haruku. He died there and was buried at Cape Marakee but was re-interred at Ambon in February 1947.
Born 1917 in Kells Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of George and Margaret (Bell) Penman, of Dalmae, Dalry.
Died on Service on 17 May 1943 and buried in Ambon War Cemetery, Indonesia.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy War Memorial.


PTE. JOHN THOMPSON, 5th SCOTTISH PARACHUTE

John Thompson – age 28 – Private (3190463) 5th (Scottish) Battalion, Parachute Regiment, Army Air Corps.
Born 1915 in Dalry. Son of Margaret Thompson of Hill View, Dalry.
Died of Wounds on 7 December 1943 and buried in Sangro River War Cemetery, Italy.

The 5th (Scottish) Parachute Battalion, as part of the 2nd Parachute Brigade landed in Italy in July 1943. In November they were attached to the 2nd New Zealand Division and the battalion was involved in the Battle of Monte Cassino and the battles along the River Sangro.


ELMA M. WOOD, N.A.A.F.I.
Not listed by CWGC
Elizabeth Mary Wood – age 21 – Canteen Assistant, the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes.
Elma died of Addison's disease in Dumfries Infirmary.
Born 1920 in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Daughter of Adam Wacker Wood and of Hannah (Robertson) Wood of Kirkland Street, Dalry.
Died on 18 November 1941 and buried in Dalry Churchyard.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy War Memorial.

Robert Little (Bobby). Killed on active service 14 Mar 1941 at age 21and buried in Dalry churchyard.
