Arthur's attestation papers show he was born on 16 April 1883 in Falkirk. He was 5'4"; medium complexion; brown eyes; reddish hair.
The "Canada War Graves Registers" show Arthur was a Private and died on 9 April 1917. He was "killed during the attack on Vimy Ridge". Cemetery is "THELUS MILITARY CEMETERY, FRANCE"

There are notes in the record showing that William was acting as a Lance Corporal, unpaid.

The Glasgow Herald, Monday, 25th February, 1918.
"CASUALTIES. Notes on Officers. A. AND S. HIGHLANDERS.
Mr. KENNETH J. NIVEN.- Now reported killed or died of wounds, Second Lieutenant Kenneth J. Niven was the youngest son of Mr. Charles B. Niven, chief engineer of the Carron Line of steamers and of Mrs. Niven, 18 Meeks Road, Falkirk. Joining the army in January, 1915, immediately on attaining his seventeenth birthday he was gazetted by April, 1917 and passed to the Argyll's. He had only been 17 days at the front when he was reported missing. In his twentieth year at the time of his death, Lieutenant Niven was, in civil life a draughtsman with Falkirk Iron Company."

"Deaths on Service.

.- Killed in action on 3rd May, Ptes. John and James Benson, aged 22 and 20 years, Seaforth Highlanders (late Argylls), beloved and only sons of John and Catherine Benson, late of 2, Mill Square, Graham's Road, Falkirk."


Same publication as above, day and date; page 3:- "Private John Benson, Seaforth Highlanders, aged 22, an apprentice fitter to trade, who with his brother James was reported missing after the same action in France, is now believed to have been killed. His brother was lately posted as killed also. John was mobilised as a Territorial, and was wounded on April 9th. His parents formerly resided in Graham's Road, but Mrs. Benson's address is now 2, Middle Street Lane, Grangemouth."

.- Previously reported missing now officially reported killed in action on 27th July, 1916, Lance-Corporal David Macaulay Robertson, Royal Fusiliers, son of the late Charles Robertson, Comrie, and the late Mrs. Robertson, Cockburn Street, Falkirk."

"Official intimation has been received that Lance-Corporal David Macaulay Robertson, who was formally reported wounded at Delville Wood on 27th July, 1916, is now presumed to have been killed on that date. Lance-Corporal Robertson, who formerly resided with his mother at Cockburn Street, Falkirk, was an apprentice joiner with Messrs. Kellock and Kilgour, Graham's Road. A fortnight after his mother's death he enlisted in the Sportsmen's Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers in January, 1915, and went on foreign service in November the same year."
