Adam,
I think that the sections Derek identified on this memorial are correct. The last section for WW1 is from the Waterside memorial. The only Nane That I can see as being out of place is William Hill Who came from Benquhat.
John McMurdo Menzies 2nd Royal Scots, lived in Dalmellington but was born in Sanquhar and, I think, is also on a memorial there.
Hope this is helpful

Ross

Thanks for the update. The local knowledge is just what we need. Interesting to see that the Waterside memorial also lists the same names.

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1222

Do you know which places the other two 'splits' in the names for the First World War are for?

Thanks

Adam

After looking at some casualties from each section, could it be for WW1?

Dalmellington
Benquhat (aka Benwhat)
Dunaskin
Waterside

Hi,
The sections are for Dalmellington, up to James Williamson. Benwhat, to William Bryan. Lethanhill and Burfoothill up to William Talman and Waterside (Dunaskin), Adam Vance.
It looks like the lads from these areas were added to Dalmellington memorial.
I used to walk past this Memorial when going to school and wondered who these men were.

The owner of the 14th HLI website has made some recent changes that have caused my links to 'break'. The information is still there at: http://www.14hli.co.uk/fallen/died/honourm.html
Kindest Regards,

This memorial has had its second major makeover in a decade. I notice that the plaque to James Orr (now redundant) has been removed and replaced by a notice of the previous renovation. Cast iron poppies have been added on the corners and to the gate. The bench that was in front of the memorial has now been removed and the concrete platform extended - this should make it much more conducive to services at the site. Finally, the East Ayrshire WW1 commemorative bench has been installed.
