Walter Anderson – age 26 – Private (3192174) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter was a shepherd in the Roberton district of Selkirkshire when he enlisted at the outbreak of war.
The 6th KOSB landed on the Normandy beaches on the 15 June 1944, and fought through France, Belgium and Holland with the 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division.
Walter was killed at Massbree but was re-interred in Venray in September 1946.
Born 1919 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late William Anderson and of Mrs. Anderson of Allangillfoot, Eskdalemuir and of “Greenview” Denholm, Selkirkshire.
Killed in Action on 24 December 1944 and buried in Venray War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Eskdalemuir Parish War Memorial.

Peter Blake – age 23 – Private (17478) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Peter was a joiner in Ayton, Berwickshire, where the family had lived for a number of years before moving to Denholm. He enlisted in 1914 and joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was invalided home to hospital in Glasgow. He was posted to the 2nd KOSB in France in July 1916 but was killed on the Somme within the month.
Born 1893 in West Calder, Midlothian. Son of Andrew Pettie Blake and of Barbara (Tillie) Blake of Denholm.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Ayton Parish War Memorial.


WILLIAM BLAKE PTE. SCOT. RFLS.
William Elliot Blake – age 25 – Lance Corporal (16006) 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
William served his apprenticeship at Minto Gardens and in 1911 he was a gardener at Unthank Hall in Haltwhistle, Northumberland. He was a foreman gardener at Conishead Priory in Ulverston, Lancashire (now in Cumbria) when he enlisted there. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1890 in Leith, Midlothian. Son of Andrew and Elizabeth or Lizzie (Elliot) Blake of Leyden's View, Denholm and of 6 Dovecote Street, Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour.


THOMAS CAIRNS PTE. SCOTS GDS.
Thomas Cairns – age 23 – Private (11946) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Thomas had been a forester before he joined the City of Glasgow Police Force in 1912. He served in “L” Division and was living at 42 Stewartville Street in Partick when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined the 2nd Scots Guards in France in April 1915 but was wounded at Neuve Chapelle and was evacuated to the Red Cross Hospital in Perth. When he recovered he was posted to the 1st Battalion at Ypres and served there and on the Somme in 1916. After some leave he returned to Ypres in October 1916 and was serving with a Lewis Gun Section when he was fatally wounded. Thomas died four days later in the 47th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1893 in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire. Son of Thomas and Mary Ann (Anderson) Cairns of "Sunnyside," Denholm.
Died of Wounds on 3 August 1917 and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour, on the City of Glasgow Police memorial and on the Partick Division Roll of Honour.

JAMES L. COCHRANE L.SGT. M.G.C.
James Leyden Cochrane – age 25 – Lance Sergeant (18373) 48th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
James had served his apprenticeship in Denholm with Turnbull & Son, tailors and clothiers, and was employed with the company in Hawick when he enlisted as Private (16069) in the Royal Scots in November 1914. He landed with the 12th Battalion in France in May 1915 and later transferred to the MGC.
The Machine Gun Companies of the 48th Division were formed into a Battalion in March 1918. The 48th Division had moved from France to Italy at the end of 1917 and held the front line sector at the Montello in March 1918. It then moved west, to the Asiago sector, where it took part in the fighting on the Asiago Plateau on 15 and 16 June.
Born 1892 in Cavers, Roxburghshire. Son of William Whitelaw Cochrane and Helen Amos (Lang) Cochrane of Leyden's Cottage, Denholm.
Killed in Action on 15 June 1918 and buried in Boscon British Cemetery, Vicenza, Italy.

Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

James Crawford – age 21 – Lance Corporal (S/4810) 9th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
James enlisted in September 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1894 in Ashkirk, Selkirkshire. Son of Robert and Annie (Lauder) Crawford of Denholm.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

Thomas was farming when he enlisted in the 51st Battalion at Edmonton, Alberta in November 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in April 1916 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion in France in June but was killed three months later.
Born 1897 in Denholm, Cavers. Son of Robert and Annie (Lauder) Crawford of Denholm.
Missing in Action on 9 September 1916 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.

At the time of his sons' deaths Robert Crawford had been serving as Private (SE/4961) in the Army Veterinary Corps in Egypt since March 1915.

ROBERT ELDER PTE. SCOTS GDS.
Robert Elder – age 25 – Private (10746) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Robert was a constable in the Hawick Burgh Police Force when he enlisted in 1914 and he joined his battalion in France in February 1915 but he was killed by a sniper less than two months later. Robert was buried in Edward Road Cemetery No.4 (Factory Trench) and was re-interred at Souchez after the war.
Born 1890 in Gretna, Dumfriesshire. Son of Andrew and Nellie or Jane (Johnstone) Elder of 1 Garfield Street, Hawick.
Killed in Action on 6 April 1915 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.


JAMES ELLIOT PTE. SCOTS GDS.
James Elliot – age 31 – Private (5762) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
James was a ploughman when he enlisted in the Scots Guards in December 1904 and he served for three years before joining the Derbyshire County Constabulary in December 1907. In 1911 James, aged 27, was a constable and living at 8 Scarsdale Place in Buxton but was posted to Ockbrook in 1913. As a reservist he was mobilised and landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 13 August 1914. (Source: derbysnarpo.co.uk)
Born 1883 in Innerleithen, Peeblesshire.
Son of the late Euphemia (Kidd) Elliot (died 1894) of Jedburgh, Roxburghshire and of George Elliot of Barnhill, Denholm. Husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Brookes of 2 Princess Drive, Borrowash, near Derby.
James Elliot married Elizabeth Ann Wiles in 1912 in Lincoln and Elizabeth Ann Elliot married William V. Brooks in 1918 in Lincoln.
Missing in Action on 11 November 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Robert was a ploughman at Coliforthill Farm, Bonchester Bridge when he married in 1902 in Denholm and he had been a woodman on the Cavers Estate for ten years when he enlisted in November 1914. He was posted as Corporal (200788) to the 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers in France but was transferred to the 1st RSF.
Born 1878 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire as Robert Scott Elliot. Son of Margaret Scott Elliot of Woodbrae, Teviothead, Roxburghshire. Husband of Annie (Kerr) Elliot of Deanhead, Cavers and of Mossieknowe, Teviothead who he married in 1902 in Denholm, Cavers.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour. (RSF section)


ANDW. M. FERGUSON PTE. RL. HIGHRS.
Andrew Marius Carruthers Ferguson – age 19 – Lance Corporal (S/4806) 9th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Ferguson landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
The bodies of 41 men of the 9th Black Watch were brought from positions a little West of Loos and were re-interred at Mazingarbe after the war.
Born 1896 in Denholm, Cavers. His birth was also registered in Ayr where his father was domiciled.
Son of James Kerr Ferguson and of Mary Laidlaw (Carruthers) Ferguson of Douglas Square, Newcastleton, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1915. and buried in Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France.
Also named on the Liddesdale War Memorial in Newcastleton.

ALAN EDMONSTOUNE GREENSHIELDS LEADBETTER MAJOR R.H.A.
Alan Edmonstoune Greenshields Leadbetter – age 21 – Major, "L" Battery. 15th Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery.
Alan was educated at Ardvreck School in Crieff, Perthshire and at Rugby School in Warwickshire, and was commissioned from the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich in February 1915. He landed with the 92nd Battery of the 17th Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery at Gallipoli in April 1915. He was made Adjutant to the brigade and was promoted to Lieutenant in December. He then served in Egypt before moving with the 29th Division to France in March 1916. He was wounded in at Longueval in November and evacuated home for some months before returning to France where he was promoted to Captain in May 1917 and to Major in July but he was killed a month later.
Both the 15th Brigade of the RHA and the 17th Brigade of the RFA were part of the 29th Division.
Born 1896 at Edmonston, Biggar, Lanarkshire as Alan Edmonstoun Leadbetter. The birth was also registered at St, George, Edinburgh where his father was domiciled at 2 Magdala Place. Son of Thomas Greenshields Leadbetter, architect, and of Mary Anne (Usher) Leadbetter of Spital Tower, Denholm.
Killed in Action on 4 August 1917 and buried in Canada Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on a stained-glass window in Bedrule Parish Church and on the Ardvreck and Rugby school memorials.


ROBERT HARKNESS PTE. RL. HIGHRS.
Robert Harkness – age 26 – Private (3/4151) 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Robert was a baker in Denholm when he enlisted in September 1914. He joined the 1st Battalion in France in April 1915 but was wounded at Loos in September and was evacuated home. When he recovered he was posted to the 2nd Battalion and landed with them at Basra in Mesopotamia in December 1915.
Born 1890 in Castleton, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Mary Ann (Routledge) Harkness (died 1896) and of the late Richard Harkness (died 1904) of 26 North Hemitage Street, Newcastleton.
Killed in Action on 22 April 1916 and buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
Also named on the Liddesdale War Memorial in Newcastleton.


JAMES LANDELS PTE. K.O.S.B.
James Landels – age 28 – Private (201337) 1/4th (Border) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James, as Private (8371), was posted to his battalion in Egypt in 1916 and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1888 Cavers. Twin son, with John, of William and Mary Ann (Innes) Landels of Little Cavers.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.

William was a policeman in the Northumberland Constabulary at Blyth when he enlisted in April 1915. He was at the King Street Barracks in Aberdeen when he became ill and he died of meningitis in the Aberdeen City Hospital.
Born 1890 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire. Son of James and Hannah (Brown) Law of Sunnyside, Denholm.
Died on Service on 29 May 1915 and buried in Cavers (Denholm) Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Northumberland Constabulary Memorial now at Wallsend, North Tyneside.

Alexander Murray – age 28 – Private (268352) 1/6th (Perthshire) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Alexander was a gamekeeper with Captain Fyfe-Jamieson of Cavers when he enlisted in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry in 1916. He was posted as Private (7211) to the 4th/5th Black Watch and then as Private (6587) to the 1/6th Battalion.
Born 1888 in Teviothead, Roxburghshire as Alexander Robert Murray.
Son of late Mary (Scoon) Murray (died 1914) and of Robert Murray of Hillview, Denholm. Husband of Margaret (Cormack) Murray of Hillview, Denholm who he married in 1909 in St Giles, Edinburgh.
Note: The CWGC Register shows her as Angela Murray.
Missing in Action on 23 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

GEORGE MURRAY PTE. CANADIANS.
George Murray – age 34 – Private (3231058) 19th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
George was a ploughman at Caldronbrae near Kelso before he emigrated to Canada in 1913. He was working in the Bridge and Building Department of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company at Perry Sound in Ontario when he was drafted into the army in Toronto in January 1918. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in February and was posted to France in July. George joined his battalion in August but was killed three weeks later.
Born 1885 in Denholm, Cavers. Son of the late Isabella (Hardie) Murray (died 1910) and of Thomas Murray of Denholm.
He named as his next of kin his sister Helen Murray of Baillieknowe, Stichill, Kelso and of Station House, Roxburgh.
Missing in Action on 28 August 1918 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.
Also named on the Stichill Parish War Memorial.


JOHN McGLASSON STKR. R.N.
John McGlasson – age 33 – Trimmer (5692TS) H.M. Trawler Arctic Prince, Royal Naval Reserve.
In 1901 John was a carter at Kinninghall Farm Hinds Cottage in Kirkton. He was killed when the minesweeper “Arctic Prince” struck a mine in the Barents Sea. Six crewmen were killed.
Born 1883 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Son of Christopher and Elizabeth Scott (Rooks) McGlasson of Kirkton, Hawick. Husband of Christina (Cruickshank) McGlasson of 8 Marywell Street, Aberdeen who he married in 1909 in St.Giles, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action/Buried at Sea on 15 April 1917 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.


SYDNEY C. RICHARDSON PTE. K.O.S.B.
Sydney Richardson – age 20 – Private (20829) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Sydney enlisted in July 1915 and was posted to the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in October. At some point he transferred to the 6th KOSB in France and was wounded and taken prisoner near Arras on 3 May 1917. Some records show that he died a week later but others state that he died at the end of May.
(CWGC and ICRC PoW records have 29 May. SDGW and Army Registers of Soldiers effects have 10 May)
Born 1897 in Kelso, Roxburghshire as Sydney Cairns. Son of Margaret (Cairns) Richardson and step-son of John Richardson of East End, Denholm.
They married in 1901 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 29 May 1917 and buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel, Hessen, Germany.
Also named on the Lilliesleaf Parish War Memorial as Sydney Cairns.

Robert Porteous Scott – age 29 – Rifleman (25951) 4th Battalion, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade.
Robert was a farm hand at Nukumaru on the North Island of New Zealand when he enlisted in May 1916. He sailed from Wellington in September and joined his battalion in France in January 1917 but he was killed a month later at Messines.
Born 1887 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Walter Scott of Craigview House, Denholm and of Helen or Nelly (Porteous) Scott of Denholma and of Morningside, Edinburgh. He named his sister Mrs L.A. Thomson of Pahiatua, New Zealand as his next of kin.
Killed in Action on 23 February 1917 and buried in Berks Cemetery Extension, Belgium.


GEORGE STORIE GNR. R.F.A.
George Andrew Storie – age 20 – Gunner (166282) "Z" 20th Trench Mortar Battery, Royal Field Artillery.
By March 1916, most Divisions had three Trench Mortar Medium Batteries, designated X, Y and Z.
In 1911 as George Andrew Graham, age 13, he was living with his family at Cavers and he was a motor driver at Bonchester near Hawick when he enlisted.
Born 1897 in Castleton, Roxburghshire as George Andrew Graham. Son of Isabella (Graham) Storie and step-son of Thomas Storie of West Cote Cottage, Kirkton and of Todlaw, Cavers who had married in 1900 in Kirkton, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 12 November 1917 and buried in Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand. Somme, France.


GEORGE B. TAYLOR PTE. R.F.
George Bannerman Taylor – age 29 – Private (37601) 25th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers.
Note: some records show his service number as G/57601 or as GS/77601.
George served his apprenticeship with Messrs Scott & Rutherford in Hawick and was an auctioneer with Swan Ltd. Livestock Sales of Edinburgh when he enlisted. He landed as Private (2415) with the 24th Royal Fusiliers (the 2nd Sportsman's Battalion) at Boulogne in November 1915 but at some point he transferred to the 25th (the Frontiersmen Battalion) which had been in East Africa since May 1915. George was killed during the battle at Mahiwa and was buried in Mtama Cemetery but was later re-interred in Dar es Salaam.
Born 1888 in Cavers, Roxburghshire. Son of the late William Taylor (died 1916) and Barbara (Murray) Taylor (died 1911) of Ashybank Farm, Cavers.
Killed in Action on 18 October 1917 and buried in Dar es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania.

ANDREW TURNBULL PTE. K.O.S.B.
Andrew Turnbull – age 19 – Private (201248) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a farm worker at Effledge Farm, Kirkton when he enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB in 1914. He joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (8251) and served there and in Palestine where he was fatally wounded.
Born 1898 Wilton, Roxburghshire as Andrew Edgar Morrison Turnbull. Son of the late Isabella (Bell) Turnbull (died 1901) and of James Turnbull of Denholm Mill. Step-son of Ellen (Jeffrey) Turnbull who married James in 1903 in St. Giles, Edinburgh.
James died in 1919 and Ellen re-married Peter Burt Law and lived at New Blainslie, Lauder, Berwickshire.
Andrew named his sister Mrs Elizabeth (Turnbull) Moffat as his legatee.
Died of Wounds on 14 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.


SAML. H. TURNBULL PTE. RL. HIGHRS.
Samuel Horace Turnbull – age 34 – Private (290443) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
In 1901 Samuel was an apprentice engine fitter in Lasswade, Midlothian and by 1911 he was a coal miner, living with his wife and family in Cowdenbeath, Fife. He was working at Raith Colliery and living in Auchtertool, Fife when he enlisted at Burntisland, Fife.
Born 1883 in Cheetham, Prestwich, Lancashire. Son of Robert Scott Turnbull and Hanna Maria (Whiteley) Turnbull of Denholm, Hawick. Husband of Jessie (Robertson) Turnbull who he married in 1907 in Newcraighall, Midlothian.
Later she became Mrs William Connor of 18 Landale Terrace, Auchtertool, Cowdenbeath, Fife when she re-married in 1919 at Lasswade, Midlothian.
Killed in Action on 19 July 1918 and buried in Meteren Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Auchtertool Parish War Memorial and on the Cowdenbeath War Memorial.

His eldest son Robert was killed in WW2 and is named on the Cowdenbeath WW2 Memorial
Robert Turnbull – age 33 – Sergeant (2755454) 7th Battalion, Black Watch who died between 23 and 24 October 1942 and who is buried in El Alamein Cemetery, Egypt

GEO. McC. WALKER PTE. R.A.S.C.
George McCall Walker – age 22 – Shoeing Smith (T3/1555) 1st Company, 25th Divisional Train, Army Service Corps.
George was a blacksmith in Denholm when he enlisted in November 1914 and he joined his Company in France in September 1915. George was found to have died of his wounds when he arrived at the 64th Casualty Clearing Station in Proven.
Born 1895 in Cellardyke, Kilrenny, Fife. Son of William and Elizabeth (Craik) Walker of 18 Lothian Street, Hawick.
Died of Wounds on 25 April 1918 and buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

1939 – 1945


PTE. WALTER ANDERSON 6th K.O.S.B.
Walter Anderson – age 26 – Private (3192174) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter was a shepherd in the Roberton district of Roxburghshire when he enlisted at the outbreak of war. The 6th KOSB landed on the Normandy beaches on the 15 June 1944, and fought through France, Belgium and Holland with the 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division. Walter was killed at Massbree but was re-interred in Venray in September 1946.
Born 1919 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late William Anderson and of Mrs. Anderson of Allangillfoot, Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire and of “Greenview” Denholm.
Killed in Action on 24 December 1944 and buried in Venray War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Eskdalemuir Parish War Memorial.


PTE. ANDREW W. FORD R.A.
Andrew William Ford – age 35 – Gunner (1738979) 265 Battery, 59 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Andrew was employed with Messrs J. & R. Elliot in Hawick when he enlisted in December 1940. He died in a Military Hospital at Stannington in Northumberland after an accidental shooting while he was on guard duty.
Born 1906 in Coldstream, Berwickshire. Son of Andrew and Jane (Brydon) Ford of Braeside, Cannongate, Denholm.
Died on Active Service on 30 June 1941 and buried in Cavers (Denholm) Cemetery. (CWG)

His sister, Elizabeth Anne Henderson Ford and her husband Arthur Arnati Rutherglen were killed in an air raid at 14 Gloucester Avenue, St. Pancras, London on 26 September 1940.
