Not listed on UKNIWM

OS Map Ref NX 237 820

Location is beside the road on a bend at the south end of the village.

The gates with poppies look very new.

Notice also that there is a Commandant Indian Police on the WW1 panel.

Two brothers. It's kind of "odd" - both were born just down the road (A 714) in the adjacent village of Bargrennan, Kirkcudbrightshire - John in 1886 and William in 1881 - but only John is listed on the War Memorial there. John also served in the RSF as Pte. 31929 before being transferred to the Royal Scots.
The family used the name "Kelly" for some time but in 1907 when John married Jeanie McDowall he used "Kellie". However SDGW (and SNWM) list him as Kelly. William is listed as Kellie.

The Galloway Gazette (6 June 2014) carried the item below as part of its Galloway's Great War feature. It concerns Robert Gibson who is named on Barrhill memorial.

Just coming back to my above posting re Robert "Bertie" Gibson. He is recorded on the SNMW as Pte 27785 Robert Gibson, 15th Bn, 48th Highlanders of Canada. His attestation papers are in the Canadian archive and he is mentioned on his parents' gravestone in Barrhill cemetery "His only son Robert Barlow [Gibson] lost at Ypres 24-29 April 1915." [I will photograph this when I next visit Barrhill].

But I don't seem to be able to see him on CWGC. Is it me or is he not on there?

He is there but thanks to the useless CWGC new name search functionality you need to hunt for him.

A bit more on Tom Andrew

Wigtownshire Free Press (22 December 1921): Information has been received by Rev John Graham Andrew, UF Manse, Barrhill, of the death in action on the NW Frontier of his son, Superintendent Tom Andrew, Indian Police. From the bare summary of facts which have been telegraphed, it appears that the picket, of which Superintendent Andrew had charge, was very heavily attacked. He insisted on being the last to leave, and received fatal injuries before safety could be gained. The body was afterwards recovered. Col the Rev John Brownlie DD VD CF conducted a moving memorial service in the United Free Church, Barrhill, on Sunday.
