PostPosted: Wed Jul 27, 2016 7:41 pm    Post subject: James Kennedy - Royal Scots Reply with quote

I thought I'd share the following in relation to one of the men commemorated on my home town war memorial - James Kennedy, Royal Scots.

My initial research in the early noughties failed to positively identify this man.

However I am sure he is Private 20288 who was then residing at 29 Westfield Terrace, Rattray with his wife and family.

His pension papers survive on Ancestry which shows that he was gassed at Ypres in May, 1915, a result of which he was rendered blind and suffering from fits. He spent some time in Craigleith Military Hospital and was discharged from the Army on 21st November, 1915.

His entry in the Soldiers Effects Register states he died on 15th March, 1916 but the Medical Board were still reporting on his condition until October, 1916. I cannot find his death registered in Scotland (I have tried several options) and there is no match in the English Death indexes.

I found that Kennedy family moved from Rattray to Dalkeith during 1915. A daughter, Elizabeth Kennedy was married on 10th September, 1915 and her address was Anderson's Land, Eskdaill Street, Dalkeith.

On the 14th December, 1916 a son, also James Kennedy, of Candlework Close, Dalkeith married Bessie Chalmers. James Kennedy Snr. would appear to be still living at this time as he is described as a retired ploughman.

Another son, Andrew Kennedy, Purcell's Close, Dalkeith died on 12th March, 1922 and James Kennedy Snr. is recorded as deceased by then.

James Kennedy's wife - Catherine Dougall Kennedy, of 67 Gibraltar Gardens, Dalkeith died on the 1st August, 1948.

I wrote the Local Studies at Loanhead, Midlothian hoping that James may be buried along with his son or wife, or if not he might me mentioned on a gravestone. They replied as follows;

I have successfully found burial records for both Andrew and Catherine Kennedy. Andrew Kennedy is shown in the Watertower old cemetery, Dalkeith. He was buried on 15th March aged 21. The entry shows he was buried in “Free ground”. This would most probably be a common ground burial. Catherine is shown as having been buried in the same Watertower cemetery on 3rd August aged 71. The section of ground recorded on her notice is P79 (Purchased ground). However, sadly it would appear there are no memorials as this cemetery has been researched and recorded by a team of local volunteers and there is no mention of either person in the records for inscriptions within the graveyard.

This was a blow and the mystery goes on.............

You might want to try John Duncan at Newbattle At War. He has done a lot of work going through Midlothian papers looking for Royal Scots. It's a long shot but if anyone can help it is him.

Cheers

Adam
