Aberchirder - [Banff & Buchan District (1975-1997)] Aberdeenshire

The Aberchirder war memorial is a tall rustic grey granite column with a saddle cap. The names of the fallen of WWI are listed on a dressed panel in the face of the column. A crossed sword and flag with the dates 1914 - 1919 are carved in relief on the face of the pedestal, and the names of the fallen of WWII are on a granite tablet set at an angle at the base of the pedestal. The monument stands by the kirk on the Main Street.

ABERCHIRDER
UKNIWM Ref: 8641

Address
MARNOCH CHURCH
ABERCHIRDER
GRAMPIAN
SCOTLAND

Type: PILLAR/COLUMN
Denomination: CHURCH OF SCOTLAND
OS Map Ref: NJ 629 526

This memorial is sited in the grounds of the New Marnoch Kirk in Aberchirder ( Foggieloan or Foggie to we natives of the North East) and as stated on it, is to members of it's congregation.

Marnoch was at the heart of what became known as the Disruption in 1843 and this kirk, built the previous year, and was the first Free Church of Scotland kirk to be built.

At the time of the Great War the Free Kirk was still in existence, possibly in this case as The United Free Church of Scorland at Marnoch. I am, at this point, unsure where members, if any, of the Established Kirk are commemorated.

***************************
Update 10 Oct 2008
I am now aware that another memorial records the name of the members of the Established Kirk. More details and image will follow later.

***************************

Those members of the Culvie district of the Parish of Marnoch are recorded on a plaque on the former Culvie School.
