Robert Fotheringham, C. O. H. S.

Who he?????

Fotheringham appears to be the only one listed without rank. I have no idea what C.O.H.S. stands for.

However, I'm almost certain this is the man. I will let those interested peruse the records themselves;

Robert Fotheringham 2818 enlists in the 58th Brigade 1880 (Ancestry)
Re-enlists A. & S. 4626 Highlanders 1914 (Ancestry)
1901 Census - Residing Alloa (Ancestry)
1911 Census - Residing Ochil Place, Alloa
Died a pensioner (not noted on DC) 2nd July, 1918 from aneurism of aorta

Mark - he is who you thought. (and he was a Perthshire man!)
I found his history (and many others on this memorial) at
http://www.edinburghs-war.ed.ac.uk/sites/default/files/pdf_Hillfoots_Fatalities_0.pdf

I think the rank is CQMS.

I am unsure whether Fotheringham would fit the criteria for CWGC status but he is discharged - aneurism (aortic) and his cause of death is aortic aneurism. Stated by the Medical Board to have been 'aggravated by service since the declarataion of War' !!

John A H Robertson, Trooper, Fife and Forfar Yeomanry, (see page 1) is also commemorated on the Stirling War Memorial. He was an auctioneer's clerk, employed by Speedie Brothers, livestock agents in Stirling.
According to the Hillfoots Fatalities PDF, his name is also on the memorials for: Alva St Serf's Church (Parish Church of Alva) and Dollar Academy; there is a photograph of him in the Dollar Magazine of 1918.
