David had been employed as a clerk at Hawick railway station.

"Information of the death of Gunner Peter Taylor, Royal Field Artillery, Glover Street, Craigie, has been received with much regret. Gunner Taylor, who was killed in action, was a signalman at Perth in the employment of the North British Railway Company. He was a Reservist, and resided with his mother and sisters."

I'm genuinely surprised to note that this boy isn't listed on the memorial as it has proved to be one of the best researched memorials I've came across so far. James is listed in a Hawick newspaper as having been employed as a "checker" with the NBR before enlisting AND his father was an engine driver at Hawick:

BLACK, W. SIGNALMAN PTE.

Named on the Langholm War Memorial as:
W. BLACK, ROYAL SCOTS.
William Black – age 24 – Private (26707) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was a railway signalman with the North British Railway Company in Kelty in Fife when he enlisted at Cowdenbeath, Fife in September 1915. He had previously served with the Territorial 5th KOSB before he moved to Fife. He joined his battalion in France in December 1915 and was wounded in April 1916 but was able to return to his unit.
Born 1892 in Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire. Son of Robert and Martha (Armstrong) Black of Rosevale Street and of St. Anns, Langholm, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 14 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Langholm Parish Church memorial.

THOMSON, R.D. CLERK, PTE.

Named on the Langholm War Memorial as:

R.D. THOMSON, ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS.
Robert Douglas Thomson – age 21 – Private (S/40953) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Robert had been a goods clerk at Langholm Station, Dumfriesshire and was at 289 Broad Street, Cowdenbeath, Fife when he enlisted in Dunfermline in November 1915. He was posted to the Army Reserve and, as the North British Railway Company's Goods Manager considered his work at Inverkeithing Station important, it was not until November 1917 that he was mobilised as Private (S/24216) in the Seaforth Highlanders. He was posted to the 7th Battalion in France in March 1918 but was transferred to the 10th Argylls. Robert died of his wounds while being moved to a base hospital in Rouen.

Born 1897 in Langholm. Son of William and Isabella (Douglas) Thomson of 11 Charles Street (Old), Langholm.
Died of Wounds on 14 August 1918 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.
Also named on the Chalmers Church memorial in Langholm.

WATT, A. PASSENGER GUARD, PTE.

Named on the Langholm War Memorial in Dumfriesshire as:

A. WATT, SCOTS GREYS.
Alexander Watt – age 32 – Private (5157) 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys)
Alexander was a railway guard with the North British Railway Company in Edinburgh when he married in 1913. As a reservist he was called up at outbreak of war and joined the 2nd Dragoons in France in September 1914. Latterly, his knowledge of horses meant that he was selected to work for the Blue Cross. Alexander was killed by a hand grenade in a front line trench.
Born 1882 in Langholm, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Adam Watt and of Jane (Jackson) Watt of The Douglas Hotel, Langholm. Husband of Jessie Alexander (Simpson) Watt of 30 William Street, Edinburgh who he married in 1913 in Morningside, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 27 January 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Langholm Parish Church memorial.

Named on the Langholm War Memorial in Dumfriesshire as:

R. BARNFATHER, SCOTTISH RIFLES.
Robert Barnfather – age 20 – Private (203974) 5th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Robert was a goods clerk at Langholm Station when he enlisted. He was wounded on 28 May 1918 and died of his wounds in the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Esquelbecq.
Born 1898 in Langholm. Son of Robert and Isabella (Couthard) Barnfather of 46 Caroline Street, Langholm.
Died of Wounds on 3 June 1918 and buried in Esquelbecq Military Cemetery, France.
