Anyone have any info on:
Private (10144) Robert Melrose, Military Medal, 1st Battalion Scots Guards.
Killed 15 September 1916

SDGW has born Yarrow, Selkirkshire; resident Galashiels; enlisted:Corebridge - he is named on the GOREBRIDGE WM in Midlothian.

He was born in 1893 in Yarrow and in 1901, age 7, was at "Tosso Cottages, Manor, Peeblesshire" with his parents William & Margaret and a whole gang of siblings.
He is also on the Bargrennan WM (north of Newton Stewart)

Son of William and Margaret (Anderson) Melrose of Corriefeckloch, Bargrennan. Late of Peeblesshire. (Southern Reporter 2/11/1916 p.5 and family grave in Bargrennan Churchyard)

His MM was in the London Gazette 27/10/1916 p.10482.

I cannot trace him in the Lothians pre-war and I don't know the area - might he have been a miner?

Gorebridge is certainly a former mining town. The man you need to speak to is John Duncan of Newbattle at War. He's done a lot of work on men listed on Midlothian memorials and has trawled through the local papers from the time.

I'll let him know you are looking into Private Melrose to see if he has any information.
