Colonel John Andrew Macdonald, C.B., of Glenaladale, has died at Betley Hall, Crewe, at the age of seventy-nine. He was the eldest son of Mr. Angus Macdonald, of Glenaladale, Inverness-shire, and a brother of the late Archbishop Macdonald, of St. Andrews and Edinburgh, and also of the late Bishop Macdonald, of Aberdeen. He was educated at Ushaw. He was Lieut.-Colonel commanding 'the 3rd Cameron Highlanders from 1887 to 1897, and was created a Companion of the Bath at Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. His ancestor, John Macdonald of Glenaladale, helped the emigration of Catholic Highlanders to Prince Edward's Island in 1773, and took part in the raising of the Royal Highland Regiment. The late Colonel Macdonald was twice married—first, in 1862, to Helen, eldest daughter of Mr. Edward Chaloner, of Liverpool ; and secondly, in 1901, to Margaret, youngest daughter of Sir Edward Blount, 8th Bart., and widow of George Wicksted, of Betley Hall, Crewe. _________________ Ken |
