(Killed)
Mrs Robert Morrison, 33 Seagate, Irvine, has received intimation from the War Office that her husband, Pte. Robert Morrison, Royal Scots Fusiliers, who was posted as missing in September, 1915, is now presumed to have been killed on that date. Pte. Morrison was employed as a surfaceman on the Glasgow and South-Western Railway before joining the Army. He was 28 years of age, and leaves a widow and three young children"

Thomas was an engine cleaner with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company at Dumfries when he enlisted in August 1915. He went to France in October but was wounded and died in the 23rd General Hospital in Etaples.
Born 1896 in Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Robert Tait and of Janet (Carnochan) Tait.

Three months between enlistment and death must have been about as short a period as you could get as I believe the standard training period at that time of the war was fourteen weeks. He must have been wounded just after he arrived at the front.

Wigtownshire Free Press (9/5/1918): Mrs David Boyd, 18 Agnew Crescent, Wigtown has been notified that her brother, Lance-Corporal John Smith, Highland Light Infantry, died of wounds received in action on 31st March. Before enlisting he was employed as a railway guard on the G & SW Railway and was stationed at Hurlford. Lance Corporal Smith was 25 years of age.

Soldiers who died in the Great War. John Smith. Born: Glasserton. Enlisted: Kilmarnock. Rank: Lance Corporal. Regiment: Highland Light Infantry, 2nd Bn. Regimental Number: 21355. Died of wounds 30/3/1918, France & Flanders. Formerly 6487, R R of Cav.

1901 Glasserton Census shows John Andrew Smith (aged 7, born Glasserton) living at Balsier Cottage with his father, Andrew Smith, ploughman; mother, Margaret Smith; + 5 sisters.

He is named on Crookedholm and Hurlford War Memorial.

Son of Henry and Mary Robson of Jardine Cottage, Noblehill, Dumfries.

This man is named as BRINKWORTH, FRED. on the memorial from the former Townhead Church in Dumfries - together with his brother William.

BRINKWORTH, CHARLES F.
Charles Frederick Brinkworth – age 36 – Private (9346 & 201707) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Charles had been employed by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company at Troon in Ayrshire before he went to Antofagsta in Chile in October 1912 to be an engine driver. He returned to enlist, landing at Liverpool in February 1915. and as Private (20991) joined the 7th KOSB in France in October 1915. He was wounded in May 1916 and when recovered he was sent to Egypt, joining the 1/5th KOSB in April 1917.
Born 1882 in Coventry Warwickshire. Son of the late Walter Roland Brinkworth and of Susan (Gracie) Brinkworth of 6 Linden Grove, Dumfries.
Husband of Margaret (Cowan) Brinkworth of 35 Bank Street, Troon, Ayrshire who he married in 1904 in Troon.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Troon War Memorial .

1901 census Troon. Charles F. Brinkworth, age 19 born England was a "Railway Stoker"

Named on the St. John's Church memorial in Dumfries as PTE. T. D. HANNAH, K.O.S.B. and on the Kirkcudbright War Memorial as PTE. THOMAS HANNAH KOSB.

Thomas Hannah – age 42 – Private (7361) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was employed by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company as a porter at Johnstone in Renfrewshire when, as a reservist, he was mobilised in August 1914. He went France with the 2nd KOSB where he was wounded in November 1914 and evacuated to the UK. On recovering he was posted to the 1st KOSB and joined them at Gallipoli in May 1915.
Born 1872 in Glasgow as Thomas Dunn Jamieson. Registered in both Glasgow and Galston, Ayrshire.
Son of the late John Jamieson and of Agnes (McWhinnie) Hannah of 171 High Street, Dumfries. Step-son of John Hannah.
Husband of Mina (Hannah) Hannah of 72 High Street, Kirkcudbright who he married, when a Private in the KOSB, on 31/12/1902 in Kirkcudbright.
Missing in Action on 4 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

L.CPL. ALEXANDER FRATER, R.S.F.
Alexander Frater – age 22 – Lance Corporal (7586) 1/5th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Alexander was educated in Rhonehouse and was an assistant shunter and porter at Ayr Station when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli on 6 June 1915.
Born 1/4/1893 in Bellrigg Cottage, Kelton. Son of Janet Frater.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Rhonehouse Public School Roll of Honour.

Named on the Ruthwell Parish War Memorial in Clarencefield Village, Dumfriesshire as:

PTE. THOMAS BOYD AGE 25 CAMERONS
Thomas Boyd – age 25 – Private (S/17753) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Thomas was employed by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company as a goods guard when he enlisted in April 1915. He joined his battalion in France in June and served at Loos. He was hit by a stray bullet and died in the 1st Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1890 in Ruthwell. Son of James and Janet (Grierson) Boyd of Glebe Cottage, Ruthwell.
Died of wounds on 2 January 1916 and buried in Chocques Military Cemetery, France.


PTE. JOSEPH GILLIES AGE 19 SEAFORTHS.
Joseph Gillies – age 19 – Private (S/41873) 1/6th (Morayshire) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Formerly Private (Tr/14125) Training Reserve and Private (S/23762) Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Joseph had been employed by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company as a goods clerk at Racks, Gretna and Ruthwell Stations. He enlisted in September 1917 and was posted to the A&SH in France in April 1918 but was transferred to the Seaforths.
Born 1899 in Gorbals, Glasgow. Son of Thomas (Stationmaster) and Sarah Gillies, of Station House, Ruthwell.
Killed in action on 12 October 1918 and buried in Niagara Cemetery, Iwuy, France.


L.CPL. WILLIAM H. MUNDELL AGE 18 KOSB.
William Haugh Mundell – age 18 – Lance Corporal (14507) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a clerk with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company when he enlisted. He landed with the 7th KOSB at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1897 in Castle Douglas, Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire as William Haugh Maben.
Son of Grace (Maben) Mundell and step-son of Samuel Mundell of Railway Cottages, Ruthwell.
Missing in action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

JAMES DEMPSTER, A.&. S.H.
James Dempster – age 23 – - Private (S/15431) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James was living at Dundonald View, Irvine, Ayrshire, where he was employed as a ticket collector by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company, when he enlisted in November 1915. He was posted to the 2nd A&SH in France in July 1916 but due to illness he was evacuated to hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in January 1917. He returned to France in May and rejoined his battalion in June 1917.
Born 1894 at New Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Sarah (Martin) Dempster of Locharthur Terrace, Beeswing, New Abbey.
Killed in Action on 10 January 1918 and buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named the Beeswing Village WW1 Memorial and on the New Abbey Parish WW1 Memorial.

William was a signalman with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company when he enlisted in Glasgow in June 1915. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in November 1915.
Born 1885 in Gretna, Dumfriesshire. Son of James and Thomasina (Jerlan) Telford of Springfield, Gretna.
Killed in Action on 1 July 1916 and buried in Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuille, Somme, France.

Robert was employed by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company as a platelayer at Lochwinnoch when he enlisted in September 1914. He joined his battalion in France in May 1915.
Born 1885 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Margaret (Smith) Cole of Upper Conheath, Caerlaverock and of Mid Locharwoods, Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Jane Glen (Jamieson) Cole of 24 Colden Street, Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire who he married in 1909 in Lochwinnoch.
Killed in Action on 27 July 1915 and Woburn Abbey Cemetery, Cuinchy, France.
Also named on the Caerlaverock Parish Church memorial and on the Lochwinnoch War Memorial
