JAMES McNAE.
James McNae – age 25 – Private (2923 & 240967) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a coach painter with the Penman Company when he enlisted in 1915.
Born 1891 in Dumfries. Son of James and Jane McNae of 12 Wallace Street, Dumfries. Husband of Mary Agnes (McMorrine) McNae of 60 Irish Street, Dumfries who he married in 1915 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


ARCHD. M. MAXWELL.
Archibald Milligan Maxwell – age 18 – Private (51454) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Archibald had enlisted in the KOSB in March 1916 but was too young to serve overseas. As he approached his 18th birthday (17years and 310days) in March 1917 he attested again and in June was mobilised as Private (13265) in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) He was posted to the 3rd Reserve battalion in December (as Private 38739) and then to the 1st Battalion in France at the end of March 1918. However on arrival he was transferred again, to the 15th Royal Scots, and less than two weeks later he was fatally wounded.
Born 1899 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire. Son of David Johnstone Maxwell and of Williamina (Neisham) Maxwell of Loreburn Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 12 April 1918 and buried in Le Grand Beaumart British Cemetery, Steenwerck, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


WILLIAM MILLAR.
William Millar – age 25 – Second Lieutenant: 6th Battalion, Tank Corps.
William was educated at Dumfries Academy and worked in his father's coach building business. He enlisted as a Private in the 1/9th Battalion, Royal Scots in January 1916 and was posted as Private 104461 to the Machine Gun Corps. He was commissioned in the Tank Corps in July 1917 and was posted to France in the following December.
Born 1892 in Dumfries. Son of Andrew Millar of Alexandria Villa, Rotchell Park, Maxwelltown, and of his first wife Elizabeth (Crichton) Millar.
Killed in Action on 23 August 1918 and buried in Douchy-Les-Ayette British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial and on the Dumfries Academy memorial.


ERNEST MILLER.
Ernest Miller – age 29 – Sergeant (463644) 3rd Battalion, Canadian Pioneers.
Ernest served his apprenticeship as an engineer at the Barclay Curle Works in Glasgow. When he qualified he worked as an engineer in a gold mine in West Africa before moving to Montreal. He eventually joined the Canadian Pacific Railway and was in Vancouver in August 1914 where he was a member of a militia unit, the 6th Duke of Connaught's Own Riflles. He enlisted for overseas service in July 1915 at Vernon in British Columbia.
Born 1887 in Dumfries. Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Miller of Glenkilm, Lockerbie Road, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 13 June 1916 and buried in Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the Dumfries Academy Memorial.

ROBERT MUIR.
Robert Alexander Muir – age 22 – Private (2340 & 242760) “A” Company, 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was employed at the Arrol-Johnston Motor Works at Heathhall, Dumfries when he enlisted in the 1/5th KOSB in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and later served in Egypt but was invalided home due to illness in December 1916. After he recovered he was posted to the 6th KOSB in France in June 1917.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of Alexander and Isabella Muir of 25 Swan's Vennel, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 13 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the Dumfries Academy Memorial.


JAMES E. MUNDELL.
James Edgar Mundell – age 19 – Private (1066) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was an apprentice jeweller in Dumfries when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but contracted dysentery and died onboard the Hospital ship “Sicilia” en route from Gallipoli to Malta.
Born 1896 in Penpont, Dumfriesshire. Son of James Bald Mundell and Mary Ann (Edgar) Mundell of Nunfield, Edinburgh Road, Dumfries.
Died on Active Service and buried at Sea on 26 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the Greyfriars Church memorial in Dumfries.


JOHN NEISHMAN.
Note: All military records use Neishman. Civil records have Neisham.
John Neishman – age 24 – Private (1722) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was working as a labourer at the Crichton Royal Institution when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1891 in Dumfries. Son of William and Helen (McMurdo) Neisham of 4 Burns Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 23 November 1915 and Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


JOHN F. B. NELSON.
Note: on some records the family name is Neilson.
John Fife Dickson Nelson – age 32 – Private (34504) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Formerly Private (2748) KOSB.
John had been a painter at the Crichton Royal Institution when he enlisted in 1914. He had been in France for a year and died in the No. 3 General Hospital at Le Treport.
Born c.1886 in Dumfries. Son of late James and Maria (Dickson) Nelson of Greenbrae, Dumfries.
Husband of Isabella (Edmond) Nelson of 35 Swans Vennel, Dumfries who he married in 1912 in Glasgow.
Died of Wounds on 25 September 1918 and buried in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.

JOHN NIVEN.
John Niven – age 20 – Private (S/16260) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Born 1897 in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. Son of Robert and Hannah Niven.
In 1901 John Niven, aged 3, born Rutherglen and a nephew, was with the Kirkpatrick family in Terregles, Dumfries. His siblings, Annie 11, Robert 9 and Hannah 7, were at 149 St. Michael Street Dumfries with their Grandmother Ann Niven 71.
Annie and Robert were named as his next of kin on the Army Registers of Soldiers effects and they placed an In Memoriam message to “Our Dear Brother – 149 St. Michael Street, Dumfries”.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


JOHN H. PEARSON.
John Henry Pearson – age 23 – Private (130945) Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry)
Formerly Trooper (2245) 1/1st Battalion, Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
John was a compositor at the Dumfries Courier & Herald when he enlisted in September 1914 in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in October 1915. After their withdrawal John was transferred to 26th Squadron, MGC, Imperial Camel Corps in Egypt.
Born 1894 in Altrincham, Cheshire. Son of James Henry and Janet (Beck) Pearson of 7 Maxwell Street, Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Killed in Action on 27 March 1918 and buried in Damascus Commonwealth War Cemetery, Syria.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial and on the Imperial Camel Corps Memorial in London.


JAMES PLAYER.
James Robertson Player – age 27 – Private (2127) 1/4th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
James was an attendant at the Crichton Royal Institution before he moved into private nursing in London. He enlisted there and landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914. He was killed at Neuve Chapelle. His oldest brother David was senior attendant at the CRI and his next of kin.
Born 1887 in St Andrews, Fife. Son of John and Mary (Robertson) Player of St. Andrews, Fife.
Missing in Action on 11 March 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


JAMES REID.
James Reid – age 27 – Sergeant (5994) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
James was a grocer when he enlisted in March 1905. By 1911 he was a Corporal in the 1st Scots Guards and was serving in Egypt. In August 1914 the 2nd battalion was in London and James landed with them at Zeebrugge on 7 October 1914.
Born 1886 in Dumfries. Son of the late Samuel and Mary Ann (Lowrie) Reid of Dumfries.
Husband of Fanny (Wallace) Reid of Georgetown, Dumfries and later of Gillfield Terrace, Dumfries who he married in 1909 in Glasgow when he was a Corporal in the 1st Scots Guards based at Ramillies Barracks in Aldershot.
Missing in Action between 22 October and 7 November 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.

ARTHUR RICHARDSON.
Arthur Evens Richardson – age 19 – Private (4345 & 241073) “D” Company, 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Arthur enlisted in early 1915 and in September landed at Gallipoli where he contracted dysentery and was invalided home.
He rejoined his battalion in Egypt in October 1916.
Born 1897 in Dumfries. Son of John and Jessie Richardson of Church Lodge, Crichton Royal Institution, Bankend Road, Dumfries.
Missing in Action 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.

Richard John Richardson – age 22 – Lance Corporal (16918) 9th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Formerly Private (12011) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Richard enlisted in August 1914 and joined the 2nd KOSB at Ypres in October 1914. He later transferred to the MGC and fought at the Somme in 1916.
Born 1894 in Dumfries. Son of John and Jessie (Kirkpatrick) Richardson of Church Lodge, Crichton Royal Institution, Bankend Road, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 23 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


THOMAS RICHARDSON.
Thomas Richardson – age 39 – Sapper (17792) 11th Field Company, Australian Engineers.
Thomas served his time as a joiner in Dumfries before he emigrated to Australia in 1913. He was living in Williamstown in Victoria when he enlisted in September 1916. He landed in France in November 1917 but was wounded on 1 October 1918 and died in the 58th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1879 in Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Agnes (Chesney) Richardson of 106 St. Michael Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 10 October 1918 and buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


GEORGE ROBERTSON.
George Affleck Robertson – age 21 – Private (204539) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Formerly Private (240611) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was working as a nurseryman when he enlisted in October 1914. He was posted initially to the 1st KOSB before being transferred to the RSF.
Born 1896 in Holywood, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Mary Robertson of Barkerland, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 1 August 1917 and buried in Lebucquiere Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial as Pte. George Robertson, KOSB and as Pte. G. A. Robertson, R.S.F.

ALEXR. W. SANDERS.
Alexander Wright Sanders – age 39 – Sergeant (21332) 18th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.
Formerly Sergeant (9276 & 24291) 17th Manchester Regiment.
In 1911 Alexander had been a pattern painter with a firm of locomotive engineers in Manchester but was a park-keeper with Manchester Corporation when he enlisted in the city's 2nd “Pals” battalion in January 1915. He was for a time an instructor at Oswestry and went to France in February 1917.
Born 1878 in Dumfries. Son of Charles Stewart Sanders and of Mary (Tait) Sanders of Dumfries.
Husband of Janetta Callander (Muirhead) Sanders who he married in 1906 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 12 April 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


HUGH P. SKAKLE.
Hugh Philip Skakle – age 28 – Captain: 4th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Hugh was educated at Gordon's College and Aberdeen University; M.A., 1911 ; B.D., 1914. He was a distinguished student, and an enthusiastic athlete, as was proved by his prowess in swimming, gymnastics, and rowing. After licence in May 1914, he was Assistant at St. Michael's, Dumfries. In January 1915 he enlisted as a Private in the 4th Gordon Highlanders, and within a month received a commission as 2nd Lieutenant. He served for two years in France and was wounded at High Wood in July 1916 and was promoted to Captain in July 1917. He was honourably mentioned in dispatches by Sir Douglas Haig.
Born 1889 in Old Macher, Aberdeen. Son of George and Mary Skakle, of Aberdeen.
Killed in Action on 21 November 1917 and buried in Anneux British Cemetery, France.
Also listed on the Nithsdale Amateur Rowing Club Roll of Honour in Dumfries.


MURDO STEWART.
Murdo Stewart – age 27 – Piper/Private (799) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Murdo enlisted in the 5th KOSB Territorials in March 1911. He was a lithographer with J. Maxwell and Son, Printers and Publishers of Dumfries. He was wounded, losing four fingers of his left hand, on 12 July 1915 and was evacuated home to Henry Street, Dumfries. He was officially discharged from the army on 8 January, seven days after his death.
Born c.1891 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, USA. Son of George and Elizabeth (Robertson) Stewart of Henry Street, Dumfries and of Maxwelltown.
Died on Service on 1 January 1918 and buried in Dumfries Cemetery.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and the J. Maxwell company Roll of Honour, now in Dumfries Museum.


WILLIAM TAIT.
William Tait – age 27 – Private (S/16034) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
William has served his apprenticeship as a nurseryman at Larchfield in Dumfries and was employed by Barr & Hunter, Seedsmen when he enlisted in November 1915. He was mobilised in February 1916 and joined his battalion in France in June 1916.
Born 1889 in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. Son of William and Ellen Tait of 114 Queensberry Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

CLEMENT H. WALTER.
Clement Henderson Walter – age 31 – Private (29853) “C” Company, 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Clement had worked for a number of years at the “Scotsman” newspaper and was employed on newspaper work in Dumfries when he enlisted in January 1915. He played the organ at a number of Dumfries churches and was a pianist at many local concerts.
Born 1885 in Newington, Edinburgh. Son of the late Elspeth (Henderson) Walter and of James Walter of 76 Bonaly Road, Edinburgh. Husband of Laura Ann (Lothian) Walter of Polton Road, Lasswade, Midlothian who he married in 1914 in Lasswade.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the former Laurieknowe Church memorial now in Troqueer Parish church.


ROBERT WEMYSS.
Robert Burns Wemyss – age 20 – Private (19062) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Formerly Private (7652) Highland Light Infantry.
Robert was a fireman with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company at Corkerhill in Glasgow when he enlisted. He joined the 1st HLI in France in January 1915 and was wounded at Neuve Chapelle. He was invalided to hospital in Cheshire and when recovered was transferred to the 1st KOSB and sailed with them to Gallipoli.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of the late John Wemyss and of Mary (McDonald) Wemyss of 116 Irish Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 19 June 1915 and buried in Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the G&SWR Memorial now in Ayr Station.


JAMES WIGHTMAN.
James Wightman – age 21 – Corporal (125) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
James had been brought up at the Crichton Royal Institution in Dumfries where his father was a gardener and he was working at the Bangour Asylum in Linlithgowshire when he enlisted at Uphall (now West Lothian) He joined his battalion in France on 2 October 1915.
Born 1894 in Dumfries.
Son of the late Archibald William Douglas Wightman and of Agnes Mary (Scott) Wightman of 6 St. Michael Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 23 October 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


ALEXR. N. WILSON.
Alexander Newbigging Wilson – age 26 – Second Lieutenant: 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Formerly Private (2905 & 330760) 1/9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Highland Light Infantry.
Alexander had been an ironmonger with his father in Dumfries but was working in Glasgow when he enlisted. He went to France with his battalion in November 1914 and served with the 9th HLI until he was wounded at the Somme in July 1916. He was selected for officer training, commissioned in the KOSB in March 1917 and went to Egypt in May 1917.
Born 1891 in Dumfries, Son of James and Jane Pringle (Newbigging) Wilson of 3 Lovers' Walk, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 24 November 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the Dumfries Academy Memorial.


JACK WILSON.
John (Jack) Wilson – age 21 – Sapper (126934) 25th Divisional Signal Company, Royal Engineers.
Jack was a member of St. Michael's church choir and a sorting clerk and telegraphist at Dumfries Post Office when he enlisted in October 1916. He went to France in January 1917 and served in a Wireless Company. He died in the 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1896 in Dumfries. Son of David and Lizzie Jane Wilson of 1 Park Terrace, Glebe Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 26 July 1917 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the Post Office Memorial in Dumfries.

John Fingland Wilson – age 28 – Private (35327) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was living in Galashiels when he enlisted there.
Born 1890 in Dumfries. Son of John and Helen or Ellen Wilson of Georgetown, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 27 September 1918 and buried in Moeuvres British Cemetery, France.

JAMES F. ANDERSON

James Fergusson Anderson – age 36 – Lance Corporal (14515688) 6 Tank Brigade Workshops,
Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
James and forty-five other R.E.M.E. personnel of the 6th Guards Tank Brigade workshop, stationed near Lenham in Kent, were killed by a flying bomb.
Born 1907 in Dumfries. Son of James and Mary Anderson of Dumfries.
Killed by enemy action on 24 June 1944 and buried in Lenham Cemetery, Kent.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


DAVID BISSET.
David Bisset – age 25 – Private (3323773) 7th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
David worked in his father's fishmonger business in Friars Vennel, Dumfries.
Born 1917 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Walter and Margaret H. (Downie) Bisset of 6 Braehead Terrace, Maxwelltown, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 9 February 1943 and buried in Tripoli War Cemetery, Libya.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


OWEN McDAVID BROWN.
Owen McDavid Brown – age 20 – Sergeant/Flight Engineer (1822937) 158 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Owen's Halifax bomber took off from RAF Lissett, near Bridlington, Yorkshire for a raid on the rail yards at Tergnier but was involved in a mid-air collision over Ly-Fontaine.
Born 1924 in Dumfries. Son of Owen J. Brown and Janet Brown of 3 Leafield Road, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 18 April 1944 and buried in Grand-Seraucourt British Cemetery, Aisne, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


S. JOHN BROWN.
Samuel John Brown – age 49 – Captain (83232) Pioneer Corps.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of Samuel Brown (Town Clerk) and of Helen Ruickbie (Thomson) Brown.
Died on Active Service on 15 October 1942 and buried in Moshi Cemetery, Tanzania.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


ALBERT DAVIDSON M.M.
Albert Davidson, Military Medal – age 21 – Corporal (14214428) 6th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Albert worked as a builder in Dumfries.
Born 1923 in Holywood, Dumfriesshire. Son of Catherine Davidson; grandson of Mary Davidson, of Gasstown, Dumfries. Awarded the M.M. as 14214428 Lance Sergeant Albert Davidson, Royal Scots Fusiliers of Gasstown, Dumfries (since killed in action)
Killed in Action on 5 November 1944 and buried in Mierlo War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


THOMAS DENHOLM.
Thomas Denholm – age 35 – Corporal (3190552) 7th (Galloway) Airborne Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was employed as a bookbinder at the Dumfries and Galloway Standard.
Born 1909 in Dumfries. Son of Thomas and Rachel Murdoch (Atkinson) Denholm of Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1944 and named on the Groesbeek Memorial, Netherlands.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.

SAMUEL DICKIE.
Samuel Dickie – age 27 – Lance Corporal (7943601) 46th (The Liverpool Welsh) Royal Tank Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps.
Samuel was educated at Dumfries Academy and was indentured with a firm of Chartered Accountants in Dumfries before taking a post with a potato merchant.
Born 1915 in Dumfries. Son of Samuel and Christina Helen (Calder) Dickie of Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 22 July 1942 and buried in El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the Cornets Club memorial in Castledykes Park.


JOHN FARRIES.
John Farries – age 25 – Private (2933805) 5th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
John was educated at Brownhall School in Dumfries and became a blacksmith with Stewart's Granite Sculptors in Dumfries and a well known local footballer.
Born 1917 in Dumfries. Son of Mr. and Mrs. H. McClure of Bodin Lea, Georgetown Road, Gasstown. Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 28 October 1942 and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


JOHN FERGUSSON.
John Fegusson – age 23 – Captain (258653) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1922 in Dumfries. Son of David Fergusson, B.L. Solicitor, and Christian J. (Stark) Fergusson, an artist and one of the “Glasgow Girls”, of Southdean, Rotchell Road, Maxwelltown, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 18 February 1945 at Nijmegen and buried in Jonkerbos War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


IAN GASS.
Ian Gass – age 19 – Private (14498157) 7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Born 1926 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Samuel and Mary (Craven) Gass.
Died on Service on 26 June 1945 and buried originally in Harsefeld Cemetery and re-interred in Becklingen War Cemetery, Germany.


JOHN GRIERSON.
John Grierson – age 22 – Private (3194270) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
John was employed by the Dumfries and Maxwelltown Co-operative Society.
Born 1920 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Robert and Margaret Grierson of Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 22 January 1943 and buried in Tripoli War Cemetery, Libya.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


WILLIAM JARDINE.
William Jardine – age 31 – Pilot Officer, Air Gunner (185218) 10 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Born 1913 in Dumfries. Son of Jane Jardine. Husband of Jane Fisher (Rae) Jardine of Collin, Dumfries who he married in 1937 in Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 15 October 1944 and buried in Vadum Cemetery, Jutland, Denmark.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.

HARRY JOHNSTON D.F.M.
Henry Johnston, Distinguished Flying Medal – age 23 – Warrant Officer (617247) Royal Air Force.
Harry was awarded the D.F.M. while he was serving in 115 Squadron as a Flight Sergeant.
He was on board an Anson of No.10 Advanced Flying Unit (Observers), based at RAF Dumfries, when it was involved in a mid-air collision with another Anson and crashed into the Solway near Southerness Lighthouse. His body was not found.
Born 1921 in Dumfries. Son of James and Jean Johnston. Husband of Joy E. M. (Southgate) Johnston of King's Lynn, Norfolk who he married in 1942 in King's Lynn.
Died on Active Service on 27 June 1944 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


ADAM KEEN.
Adam Keen – age 21 – Sergeant, Pilot (1343910) Fighter Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Adam was a clerk with Carmichael Ltd. In Dumfries and was a well known local footballer.
He was flying a Blenheim of 54 Operational Training Unit at night during conversion to night-fighters when it hit a hill near Greencastle in Berwickshire.
Born 1921 in Dumfries. Son of Grace Keen of Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 3 November 1942 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


PETER McARA.
Peter McAra – age 20 – Private (14554308) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1924 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Edward and Elizabeth (McKinnia) McAra, of Maxwelltown, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Killed in Action on 28 December 1944 and buried in Brunssum War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


NEIL McALLISTER.
Neil McAllister – age 17 – Cadet: 283 Squadron, Air Training Corps.
Neil was a passenger on an Anson from RAF Wigtown when it crashed into the sea east of Kirkcudbright.
Neil's body was never found.
Born 1925 in Hamilton. Lanarkshire. Son of George and Joan McAllister of Dumfries.
Missing on 29 July 1942 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.


WILLIAM HUGHES McCUTCHEON.
William Hughes McCutcheon – age 18 – Ordinary Seaman (D/JX 563868)
Born 1925 in Whithorn, Wigtownshire. Son of James and Margaret McCutcheon of Isle of Whithorn, Wigtownshire.
Killed in action/Lost at Sea on– 1 March 1944 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
Also named on the Kingholm Quay War Memorial and on the Dumfries War Memorial.


JOHN B. McKERRON.
John Bell McKerron – age 24 – Guardsman (2697193) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Born 1919 in Dumfries. Son of David and Wilhelmina (McMichael) McKerron of Kingholm Quay, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 9 November 1943 and buried in Minturno War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Kingholm Quay War Memorial and on the Dumfries War Memorial.

PETER G. MILTON.
Thought to be:
Peter Gray Milton – age 19 – Sergeant (997221) 214 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Peter's Wellingtom bomber took off from RAF Stradishall in Suffolk for a raid on Munster but was never heard from again.
Born 1923 in Boharm, Keith, Banffshire.
Missing in Action on 28 January 1942 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Also named on the Boharm Parish War Memorial.


JAMES NICHOLSON.
James Nicholson – age 19 – Guardsman (2701912) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
James was employed by a grain merchant in Dumfries.
Born 1925 in Dumfries. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Brown) Nicholson of Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 9 March 1945 and buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.

Thomas Nicholson – age 23 – Lance Corporal (1896330) 751 Army Field Company, Royal Engineers.
Thomas had been educated at St Michael's, Noblehill and Dumfries High schools and was a builder in Dumfries when he enlisted in 1939.
Born 1919 in Dumfries. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Brown) Nicholson of Stakeford Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 21 November 1942 and buried in Bone War Cemetery, Annaba, Algeria.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


ROBERT HOLT THOMSON.
Robert Holt Thomson – age 22 – Petty Officer (D/JX 144455) Royal Navy, serving on H.M.A.S. Parramatta.
The Australian sloop “Parramatta” was torpedoed and sunk off Tobruk, Libya by the German submarine U-559.
Born 1919 in Kirkmichael, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 27 November 1941 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.

JOHN WILSON.
Thought to be:
John Wilson – age ?? – Flight Sergeant (1120348) 206 Squadron, Coastal Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Born 19?? in Dumfries. (SNWM)
Missing in Action on 29 November 1943 and named on the Gibraltar Memorial, Gibraltar.
In late 1943 206 Squadron was based on the Azores, flying Boeing Flying Fortresses on anti-submarine patrols. John's aircraft was returning from a patrol when it was diverted to Gibraltar because of the weather. However Gibraltar was also fog-bound and the aircraft crashed into the sea off Carnero Point while trying to make a landing.
