"CASUALTIES. Notes on Officers. Royal Engineers.
Lieutenant-Colonel G .A. W. LAMOND.- Died on sick leave. Lieutenant-Colonel Lamond was the fourth son of the late Mr R. P. Lamond, writer, Glasgow. He was educated at Kelvinside Academy, and was trained as a civil engineer in the office of Messrs. Formans and McCall. After serving his apprenticeship there, he was employed for many years with the firm of Sir John Aird in Egypt, and was engaged in the construction of the three Nile barrages at Esneh, Assiut and Assouan. In connection with that work he was decorated by both the Egyptian and Turkish Governments. On the outbreak of war he returned home, and after being employed on Government work at Salisbury Plain he joined the Royal Engineers. He saw service in France on the Somme and elsewhere and was rapidly promoted. About 18 months ago he went to Mesopotamia with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and was on the Staff there, and for his work was mentioned in despatches. He was lately invalided to Colombo and died there on Monday. Colonel Lamond was a keen sportsman, and was a prominent Rugby player. He was a member of the Kelvinside Academicals, and later, when engaged on the Avonmouth Dock Works, he was captain of the Gloucester County and Bristol City teams. In 1899 and 1905 he was in the Scottish Rugby team in the international matches with Wales and England. Colonel Lamond, who was 39 years of age, is survived by his wife, who resides at 28 Highburgh Road, Dowanhill, Glasgow."
