UKNIWM Ref: 44228

OS Map Ref: NX 965 765

The main Dumfries war memorial is outside this church. I found this church open when I visited, but I have no idea whether this was the exception or the rule.

Photos of the church can be found here http://www.imchad.freeola.com/mc_clumpha/dfs-chrchs/index.htm

There is an inscription on the white stone surround that might not be obvious in the photo:

REMEMBER THE LOVE OF THEM
WHO CAME NOT HOME FROM THE WAR

A little "oddity"
Over a few months in 1915 Mr & Mrs Miller of Nith Street, Dumfries lost three of their sons; William Lee McAllister Miller, aged 40, Corporal (16337) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers was drowned when the Troopship the Royal Edward was sunk in the Aegean on 13 August; Thomas Riley Miller, aged 37, Lance Corporal (11176) 9th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment was killed in action in France on 29 October; and Albert, aged 28 and not on service, died of illness in Dumfries in November.
Albert had sung in the choir in St. John's and his brother Thomas is named on this memorial, but William is not!
However just outside the church, William is named twice on the Dumfries Burgh memorial as SERGT. WILLIAM MILLER, KOSB and as PTE. W. L. McALLISTER MILLER, KOSB, but Thomas isn't mentioned!
