Falkirk Herald, Page 3, 13th July 1918
‘Camelon – Killed – Lance Corporal McNab, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders’

Official intimation has been received by Mrs. Oliver McNab, Main Street, Camelon, to the effect that her husband, Lance Corporal Oliver NcNab, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, has been killed in action. Previous to joining up, he was employed as a moulder with the Sunnyside Iron Co., Camelon and was 26 years of age. Deceased joined the colours in August last year and went to France in April 1918.

I've been unable to find ANYTHING apart from the above snippet!

All suggestions/help gratefully accepted!! Smile

Yes, I know he's on the Church Memorial - along with quite a few others who I can't find either! Laughing

I generally work on the assumption that one of the known facts is wrong but not two or more.

In this case I looked for any McNab/Macnab who died in the month preceding 13 July 1915, also I looked for any A&SH man who died in the dates with likely variations of the name and finally for any O McNab/Macnab in the MICs. No luck.

I would guess that he either served under an assumed name (mother's maiden name) or he is a non-com, the latter seems unlikely as we don't often hear of non-coms who died on the battlefield.

Thanks for having a go Paul.

There's not many options I haven't tried including any O M*cNabs anywhere in the 1911 Census. Nothing at all.

There are a few M(a)cNabs listed on the Valuation Rolls for 1915 in Falkirk but none with the initial O, and none in Camelon, but then the person listed there would likely be his father who could have been ......?

I also looked for O as a second initial, I have found quite a few locally who have the same first name as their father but commonly went by a second name.

Good luck

The date of death was 1918 in Anne's mail. I don't know if that makes a difference?

Thanks

Thanks for having a look.

I've tried Ancestry & FMP for Service/Pension Records, MIC's, Silver War Badges, etc.

I've also tried Census Returns, Valuation Rolls (including S.P. just in case) and Newspapers for Mc/MacNabs living in Camelon.

You name it - I've tried it! Laughing
