Hi, this is my first post so hopefully I've chosen the correct sub-heading pertaining to my request Very Happy

I'm trying to find out if there is a WW1 war memorial in Scotland listing 2 brothers KIA on the same day and if possible, get a photo of the memorial.

The 2 brothers are Peter and Duncan Grant

350017 Sgt Peter Grant served with the 9th Bn Royal Scots & was KIA on 24/03/18

G/49265 L/Cpl Duncan Grant served with 23rd Royal Fusiliers & was KIA on 24/03/18

A third brother James W Grant served with the Royal Flying Corps and survived the war. I have all three medal groups in my collection (but not the 2 Death Plaques).

I've searched extensively on-line, but in vain, for a war memorial in Scotland that lists both Duncan & Peter Grant on the same brass/stone name tablet. That said, I'm not exactly sure that they are in fact listed on a war memorial, I'm simply assuming they are. Perhaps they share the same family grave with a named tomb-stone in a local church burial ground? Confused

SDGW has Peter's birth place as East Linton, Haddingtonshire
1891 census has Peter's birth place as Whittinghame, East Lothian (Civil Parish: Whittinghame, East Lothian)
1901 census has Peter's birth place as Whittinghame, Haddingtonshire (Civil Parish: Bathgate, West Lothian)

SDGW has Duncan's birth place as Cupar, Fife
1901 census has Duncan's birth place as Camevon, Fifeshire (Civil Parish: Bathgate, West Lothian)

So some conflicting information with birth places it would seem. Any help would be most appreciated, Many thanks, Regards Andrew

Welcome, I see you made it across from GWF. Nothing much to add to my previous comments, not in D&G, not on Bathgate or Whittinghame either. Camevon is likely to be Cameron I think. Cameron has no war memorial as far as we have found out.

Good luck.

Hi Paul, yes I managed to log-on thanks Very Happy

The problem is that the Scottish 1911 census is not yet available on Ancestry or FindMyPast. In addition, the 1901 census for Scotland (on Ancestry) states that permission has not yet been granted by the General Register Office for Scotland to display the accompanying images.

So the most recent (somewhat limited) information I can retrieve from Ancestry is from the 1901 census:

William Grant 44
Elizabeth Grant 43
Peter Grant 13
George A Grant 11
James W Grant 9
Duncan Grant 4

Maybe at the time of the Great War, all family members had been dispersed, moved away, married or whatever Question

But I would have still thought that both Peter & Duncan should be listed on a village/town war memorial somewhere, perhaps on separate memorials. I'll keep searching! Regards Andrew

Where do they reside in 1901?

Derek.

Hi, I've finally had a break-through with regards to my initial query - namely is there a WW1 war memorial in Scotland listing the 2 brothers Peter and Duncan Grant KIA on the same day, 24th March 1918.

The answer would appear to be no.

I have been contacted by a member of the Great War Forum advising me that they are both commemorated on a family tomb-stone in Falkland church Cemetery together with their parents and other brother James who also served (and returned) during WW1.

The 2 KIA brothers are not however commemorated on the Falkland village war memorial.

There is apparently some talk of a "new" war memorial for the village using some of the monies from the War Memorial Insitute which has been sold and it is hoped that the names of Peter and Duncan Grant will be included.

Belatedly, just to confirm that there is a "new" war memorial in Falkland, Fife. It is on Brunton Green and was unveiled in November 2014.

Both Peter and Duncan Grant are among names added to this memorial. This was due to them being listed on a family headstone in Falkland cemetery and, despite research, not finding them listed on any other war memorial.

That's great news, thanks for letting us know.
