trying to attach and looks like it has worked

ORKNEY MAINLAND

Visited in 1984. no photos or names, only recorded the numbers.

There are 10 parishes on my old 1” OS maps.

4 are on the UKNI but only 2 have names and one is obviously incomplete.

Birsay and Harray: WM not found by me, but UKNI ref is 44758, giving 23 + 4, no names. Probably at junction of the A967/986 rds.

But Lost Generation has a listing for St Michaels Ch, Harray: John Hewlands, born Harray, KIA in France, Seaforths, buried at Hancourt.

And, probably, brother Isaac, born in Finstown, KIA aged 15 (so it says) in France, buried at Neuville aux Larris, brother of John and Andrew.

Evie and Rendell. Looks like 2 WMs as I have listed them separately, 9 + 0 for Evie and 5 +0 for Rendell.

Sandwick: not found, possibly in Dounby village.

Firth: in Finstown cemetery. 44747 on UKNI, says 17 + 2, but my count was 18 + 0.

Stromness: probably in the town. 44714 on UKNI, 50 + 15 (50 + 16 in my notes).

Orphir. Location n/k but my record shows I found it with 16 + 0 names.

Kirkwall and St Ola: 2213 and 44712 in UKNI. 138 + 28 agrees with my count. 2 names only are on the LG website.

St Andrews and Deerness. 2 WMs, I have a count of 10 + 2 for the former, 13 + 0 for Deerness.

Holm: outside St Mary’s village, on B9052. 21 = 6

John

Thanks for the extra information.

Ian A photographed some Orkney War memorials a couple of weeks ago and they include the ones you mention. If you go to the following list on the forum:

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=827

There are links on the list which will take you to Ian's posts.

Regards

Adam
