Additional information: Only Son of Lady Wilson, of Airdrie House, Airdrie, Lanarkshire and Kippen House, Dunning, Perthshire, and third son of the late Sir John Wilson, Bt., husband of Kathleen Elise Knowles (formerly Wilson, nee Gray), of Kippen House, Dunning, Perthshire.

2nd Lieut., 7th (Territorial) Battn. Princess Louise's (Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders), yst. s of Sir John Wilson, Bart., of Airdrie House, Airdrie, co. Lanark. and of Kippen House, Dunning, co. Perth, D.L., J.P., coal owner and chairman of Wilsons & Clyde Coal Company Ltd., (late M.P. for Falkirk Burghs) by his wife Emma Alexandrina, daughter of David Binnie, of Glasgow; b. 25 Sept. 1890; educ. St. Salvators; St. Andrews; Fettes College, and in Germany and France; was a director of his father's company, and also of the Lanarkshire Alberta Company Ltd.; gazetted 2nd Lieut. The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders July, 1915; served with the Expeditionery Force in France and Flanders from Dec. 1916; was reported wounded and missing after the attack at Roeux 23 April 1917, and is now known to have been killed in action on that date. He had been wounded on the morning of that day, and after being dressed at a dressing station, had returned to the fighting. Buried in the Camp Trench British Military Cemetery, Fampoux east of Arras.
His adjutant wrote: "He had such a high sense of duty, that after being wounded he returned to lead his company into action, and fell fighting in the enemy lines".
And the Airdrie and District Nursing Association: "Locally your husband was looked to as one of our future leaders, and it will be some comfort to you, and we certainly will never forget his sense of duty to his men as their officer was so finely and unselfishly performed".
The Director of Wilsons & Clyde Coal Company wrote: "His fine personal qualities and his splendid business qualifications, of which they had all formed the very highest opinion, gave promise of a career of great usefulness in the management of the company, and they must all realise that his loss was indeed a very serious one to the board and to the company.He had voluntarilly and patriotically given his services to his country, and the circumstances under which he met his death, when, after being wounded, he returned to the fight and fell in the advanced lines, were all in keeping with his courageous and self-sacrificing spirit".
He m at St. Peter's Cranley Gardens, London, S.W., 4 June, 1914, Kathleen Elise, 3rd dau. of Henry Gray, of Peterstone Court, Brecon, and had two children: Thomas Douglas, b. 10 June 1917, and Aileen, b. 23 June, 1915

ROBERT WILLIAM BETT is recorded as having DIED on 30th July 1918 by the CWGC, SDGW & SNWM - and also on the Dunning War Memorial. However this is his death notice in the Strathearn Herald ?!:

DUNNING SOLDIER KILLED

Information has been received by Mr and Mrs Bett, Leadketty, that their son, Private R. W. Bett, Black Watch, was killed in action in France on 10th April. Private Bett was the second son of Mr and Mrs Bett, and was only 21 years of age. He joined the Army over three years ago, and has been two years in France, where he took part in many engagements. Another brother is also serving at the front. The sympathy of all is felt for his relatives in their great sorrow.
