Not listed on UKNIWM.

This memorial is in the village hall at OS Map Ref NX 733 669 and contains the same names as the Crossmichael civic memorial (cross). Not the prettiest of buildings and it seems relatively new so I wonder where this memorial originally stood?

I had no hint about the existance of this unlisted memorial but found it as a result of my 'fingertip search' of checking every church, hall and public building in Dumfries and Galloway. I guess it will take a long time to check them all if I ever do, a good 50% of them turn out to have unlisted memorials so it is worth the effort. Most of these are used for elections so I am thinking of contacting the Electoral Registration part of the council to see if they can let me have a list of halls and key-holders. I think I need to add a list of all halls to my existing list of all churches (sticky in churches section), just so anyone else knows what buildings have been checked.

Spoons

I've seen examples up North where the same names as civic memorials turn up on wooden plaques in community centres and village halls. On several occaisions they have been Royal British Legion plaques.

There has been some doubt about whether this was just a plaque memorial or whether the hall itself is a war memorial. It is known as the memorial hall but no evidence of a dedication in or at the hall itself or that I had been able to find elsewhere...............until now!

Following my talk at the hall on Tuesday (on local war memorials - what else?), the lady who organised the talk remembered that she had some old press clippings from the opening of the hall and I have taken copies.

The hall was opened on 19 November 1954 by the Rev J A Fisher, Convenor of the Stewartry and chairman of the Crossmichael Homecoming and Commemorative Committee. The hall was dedicated by the Rev W R Sievewright, Carsphairn, Moderator of the Presbytery of Kirkcudbright. Mrs Fisher unveiled the plaque to the 50 men of the parish who fell in two world wars. The plaque was gifted by Mr D Dow, Principal Teacher of educational handwork at Castle Douglas High School and President of the Stewartry branch of the E.I.S.

"The movement was initiated by the Homecoming and Commemorative Committee and will serve as a fine memorial to the men of the parish who gave their lives in the two world wars."

Further information is available in the two articles from 20 Nov and 4 Dec 1954 which are believed to come from the Galloway News - they were in any case obtained from the Stewartry Museum. The articles state the main donors, the donor of the land and the builders of the hall.

In summary - it is the hall (with accompanying plaque) that is the memorial.
