"KILMARNOCK WAR MEMORIAL
8000 See Unveiling by Sir H. Trenchard (Kilmarnock, Saturday.)
In presence of an assembly of over 8000 people Air-Marshal Sir Hugh M. Trenchard unveiled the Kilmarnock War Memorial this afternoon.
The memorial, which occupies a fine site in Elmbank Avenue, opposite the Dick Institute, library, and museum, is of a unique character, there being nothing of the same kind in the country.
It takes the form of a temple or shrine and is a large and architecturally imposing building of classical design, with a massive bronze statue inside.
Around the inner walls are bronze panels embossed with the names of 850 Kilmarnock men who fell in the war.

Sculptor`s Gift
The memorial was designed by Mr. James Miller, F.R.I.B.A., Glasgow, and the stature is the work of Mr. David M`Gill, the London sculptor, who is a native of Kilmarnock, and who gifted it to the town.
The cost of the building was well over £5000.
At the unveiling ceremony today the enclosure immediately in front of the memorial was reserved for relatives of the fallen, of whom nearly one thousand were present.
On either side of this were large contingents of ex-servicemen and Territorials.
After Sir Hugh Trenchard has unloosed the huge Union Jack which covered the gateway of the memorial the buglers of the R.S.F. sounded "The Last Post".
The pipers played "The Flowers of the Forest" and the buglers sounded "The Reveille."

Handed Over To Council
Sir Hugh delivered an impressive address, and afterwards the Kilmarnock Burgh Military Band and the Kilmarnock Musical Club Choir gave a rendering of "The Hallelujah Chorus."
On behalf of the War Memorial Committee, Sir Alexander Walker, K.B.E., handed over the memorial to the keeping of the Town Council, and in the absence of Provost Wilson, through illness, Bailie David Orr, Senior Magistrate, accepted custody.
At the close of the service hundreds of wreaths were placed inside the memorial, and for hours afterwards there was a large queue of people intent on inspecting the interior of the temple of memory."

I'll post pics of the names when I've discovered how to get them down in size a wee bit.
Mods - if these are 2 big , please delete and i'll post again - smaller this time - thanks

An appeal for more info from the family of John Forsyth Hastings who should be on the WW2 panels here.

News Article

KILMARNOCK man John Forsyth Hastings was 35 when he was killed during a daring operation in enemy heartland just months before the end of World War II.

The trooper was trying to rescue an armoured vehicle from a bog close to the river Rhine when two shells landed, killing John and wounding a comrade.

As a distinguished member of the 11th Hussars (Prince Albert’s Own), the former Kilmarnock Academy pupil had led the ‘Desert Rats’ through North Africa, Italy and then eventually, fatefully, into Germany.

He is remembered with honour at the Reichswald Forrest War Cemetery in Germany and also in the Scottish National War Museum.

And now his family are being sought so his memory and bravery can be honoured once more.

David John Eason explains: “I have the honour and privilege of writing the ‘Roll of Honour’ for the 11th Hussars (Prince Albert’s Own) 1939-45 (1945-1947).

“This is the first ever written memorial dedicated to the 165 members and the four attached personnel of the Regiment who sadly never came back.

“Amongst their number is Trooper John Forsyth Hastings. I am trying to trace John’s relatives for information and to offer them the opportunity to have their own dedications included in John’s entry in the Roll of Honour.

“I would also like to include any know church or war memorial on which John was commemorated in the local area.”

John was born on December 14, 1909 in Kilmarnock, to parents John Hastings and Mary Ann Davidson, nee Gillespie.

He had six siblings – Jane, Samuel, James, Catherine, Christine and Elizabeth. The family also has associated names of McCormack and Pollock.

Anyone who believes they are related to Trooper Hastings, or who knows the family, can contact David John Eason, himself an honorary member of the 11th Hussars, on 07896 201 176 or on e-mail at husrollho [AT] yahoo DOT co DOT uk
