Pte. WILLIAM BLACK, 1/5th H.L.I. 1918.
William Black – age 20 – Private (55880) 1/5th (City of Glasgow) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
William enlisted in Kelso.
Born 1898 in Stichill. Son of William and Margaret (Thomson) Black of Stitchill.
Missing in Action on 24 August 1918 and named on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


Pte. FRED CALLANDER, 1/4th K.O.S.B. 1915.
Frederick Kellor Callander – age 19 – Private (7197) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Fred was employed at Rumbletonlaw Farm, Greenlaw, Berwickshire (but just to the north of Stichill) when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 at Turfbeg in Forfar as Frederick Soutar Callander. Son of Jane Callander. Grandson of William and Catherine (Milne) Callander of Forfar who he named as his legtees.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial and on the Forfar War Memorial.

and his cousin – Jane and Alexander Callander were sister and brother.


Cpl. WILLIAM CALLANDER, 1/4th K.O.S.B. 1917.
William Callander – age 26 – Lance Corporal (201061) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William, also of Greenlaw, enlisted as Private (7958) in the 3/4th KOSB in July 1915. He was posted to the 1/4th KOSB in Egypt in 1916 and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1891 in Eassie and Nevay, Forfar. Son of Alexander and Christina (Easson) Callander of Stichill Cottage.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.

Pte. THOMAS DONALDSON, A.I.F. 1917.
Thomas Donaldson – age 25 – Lance Corporal (2060/A) 18th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
Thomas emigrated to Australia in 1912 and was a labourer when he enlisted in Liverpool, New South Wales in July 1915. He joined the 18th Battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915 and after the withdrawal they moved to France in March 1916. He was wounded in August 1916 and treated at the 4th General Hospital in Camiers before he rejoined his battalion in October. He was evacuated to hospital again in November, due to illness, and it was April 1917 before he rejoined his battalion. Thomas was wounded two weeks later and after two days he died in the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Grevillers.
Born 1892 in Greenlaw, Berwickshire. Son of Mary Ann (Donaldson) Blake and step-son of Walter Blake of Caldronbrae, Stichill who had married in 1904 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 5 May 1917 and buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


Pte. JOHN HAGGART, 9th ROYAL SCOTS. 1915.
John Scott Haggart – age 22 – Private (S/4634) 9th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
John was a gardener who had served his apprenticeship at Auchmore House, Killin, Perthshire. He was a pre-war territorial with 8th Royal Scots and enlisted at Pathhead Ford, Midlothian in September 1914. He landed with the 9th Black Watch at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1893 at Holmhead, Corsock Bridge, in the parish of Kirkpatrick Durham, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Son of James Reid Haggart of Glenlair, Corsock and of Stichill, and of Jane (McFarlane) Haggart of The Laundry, Hensol, Mossdale, Kirkcudbrightshire.
His brother's service file exists and contains a note about the family's change of address from Corsock to Stichill in May 1918. Andrew McFarlane Haggart, Pte. 146308 Royal Engineers, Special Section. He was a chemist before enlisting.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Corsock War Memorial in Kirkcudbrightshire.

Pte. GEORGE MURRAY, CANn. INFy. 1918.
George Murray – age 34 – Private (3231058) 19th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
George was a ploughman at Caldronbrae near Kelso before he emigrated to Canada in 1913. He was working in the Bridge and Building Department of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company at Perry Sound in Ontario when he was drafted into the army in Toronto in January 1918. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in February and was posted to France in July. George joined his battalion in August but was killed three weeks later.
Born 1885 in Denholm, Cavers, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Isabella (Hardie) Murray (died 1910) and of Thomas Murray of Denholm.
He named as his next of kin his sister Helen Murray of Baillieknowe, Stichill, Kelso and of Station House, Roxburgh.
Missing in Action on 28 August 1918 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.
Also named on the Denholm Parish War Memorial and on the Kelso War Memorial.


Pte. WILLIAM PRINGLE, 3/4th K.O.S.B. 1918

William Pringle – age 21 – Private (22123) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was an apprentice ironmonger in Jedburgh when he enlisted in the 3/4th KOSB in November 1915. He was posted to the 1st KOSB in France in March 1917 and transferred to the 7th/8th KOSB in April but was diagnosed with tuberculosis and evacuated home in November. William was discharged from the army in January 1918 and was awarded a Silver War Badge (303361) William died in the Anderson Sanatorium, Howdenbank in Hawick.
Born 1897 in Blackwood, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. Son of the late James Pringle (died 1898) and Agnes (Millar) Pringle (died 1900) of Blackwood, Lesmahagow. Adopted son of Archibald and Sarah (Moffat) Pringle of Stichill Schoolhouse.
Died on 2 June 1918 and buried in Stichill Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial and on the Jedburgh War Memorial.


Pte. JAMES SWANSTON, 2nd R.S.F. 1916.
James Swanston – age 30 – Private (24017) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
James was a forester in Stichill when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised as Private (22953) in the KOSB in March 1916 and was posted to the 2nd RSF in France in June 1916 but he was killed six weeks later.
Born 1886 in Stichill as James Cockburn Swanston. Son of George and Elspeth (Cockburn) Swanston of East Lodge, Stichill.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.
