"Official information has been received by Mr & Mrs McClounie, 4 Commercial Buildings, Lockerbie, that their son, Private James McClounie 1/5th K.O.S.B., has been killed in the Dardanelles. Private McClounie, who was 31 years of age, was, previous to enlistment, in the service of the Caledonian Railway Company at Lockerbie station as a porter, and latterly acted as Guard on the Dumfries branch."

"Mr William Hood, 19 St John's Road, Annan, has received official intimation that his son, Private Robert Hood, Black Watch, who was reported missing since the 18th July last year, is now concluded to have been killed in action about that date. Prior to enlisting Private Hood was in the employment of the Caledonian Railway Company. He was thirty three years of age, and leaves a widow and one child."

Hugh McMeeking, Sergeant (7874) 1/8th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Age 36.
Born 1878 in Garlieston, Sorbie. Son of Andrew and Helen (Vise) McMeeking. Husband of Agnes Jane (Scott) McMeeking (later Mrs. Dinwoodie) of Springburn, Glasgow who he married in 1902 in Rutherglen.
Missing in action 28 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

and his brother

William McMeeking, Company Quatermaster Sergeant (7873) 1/8th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Age 35.
Born 1880 in Garlieston, Sorbie. Son of Andrew and Helen (Vise) McMeeking. Husband of Mary Jane (McCutcheon) McMeeking of Springburn, Glasgow who he married in 1903 in Glasgow.
Died of wounds 30 June 1915 on a hospital ship off the Dardanelles and buried at sea. Named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Hugh, William and their father Andrew all worked as coach builders at the Caledonian Railway Locomotive Workshop at St.Rollox, Springburn, Glasgow. Hugh and William had both served in the South Africa War and had been with the "Territorials" for many years.
They are both named on the Sorbie Parish War Memorial In Garlieston Village, Wigtownshire.

On 28 June 1915 the British 29th Division attacked along the Gully Ravine Spur. The attack was reinforced by the newly-arrived 156th Brigade of 52nd (Lowland) Division, which included the 1/7th and 1/8th Scottish Rifles. However, a major tragedy overwhelmed 156th Brigade in their first battle as they bravely attacked with almost no artillery preparation. Their first rush carried them into the Turkish lines but subsequent efforts failed bloodily. (Source: iwm.org)

(Aberdeen Weekly Journal - 13th October 1916)
Official information has been received by Mrs Robertson, 10 Howburn Place, Aberdeen, that her brother, Pte. James Joss, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (M.G.S.), has been killed in action. Private Joss was the son of the late Mr George Joss and Mrs Joss, Greenhill, Bonnybridge, Stirling. Private Joss lost his life in the raid in which he won the Military Medal. At the outbreak of hostilities he was employed by the Caledonian Railway Company at Greenhill Station, Stirling.

Private Robert Cameron, Gordon Highlanders, who has died of wounds at a casualty clearing station, was 28 years of age, and the third son of Mrs Cameron, 128 Wellington Road. Before enlisting, in May, 1917, he was a parcel porter with the Caledonian Railway at the Joint Station.

(Dumfries & Galloway Standard 24th April 1918)
Miss Mary Young, Hightae, has received a letter from a Lieutenant that her brother, Private James Wilson, Lochiel's Camerons, has been killed in the recent heavy fighting, being struck on the head with shrapnel. Private Wilson was on the Caledonian Railway, Glasgow, and enlisted on the declaration of war in 1914. He was 28 years of age.

Mrs Jardine Urie Place, Calder street, Motherwell, has received information that her son, Private D B Jardine is wounded and missing. Before joining the army Private Jardine was a fireman at Motherwell with the Caledonian Railway Company. He is a son of Mrs Jardine late of Millhouse Cottage, Netherwood, Dumfries.

coincidentally David Blaylock Jardine, L.Cpl.252535 1/6th Argylls was also a railwayman but with the Glasgow and South Western.

"Mrs Bateman, 12 King's Road, Dundee, has been notified of death from wounds received in action at the Dardanelles of her husband, Lance-Corporal Harry Bateman, Royal Marine Light Infantry.
Lance-Corporal Bateman was an R.M.L.I. reservist, and was called up at the beginning of the war. He was twelve years with the Marines, and took part in the memorable defence of Antwerp. His death occurred in hospital at Alexandria.
Before the opening hostilities Lance-Corporal Bateman was employed as a shunter on the Caledonian Railway. He was 33 years of age, and is survived by his widow and two children, one of whom is only one month old
."

"Mr and Mrs Alex. Potter, Station Cottages, Craigo, have been informed from the War Office that their eldest son, Sergeant F.G. Potter, Royal Irish Fusiliers, had died of wounds. Previous to enlistment (November, 1914) Sergeant Potter was a guard on the Caledonian Railway. He left Belfast for the front in April last. He was 33 years of age. Two brothers of the late Sergeant, Corporal Stephen Potter and Coproal Alex Potter, are both serving wth the 38th Royal Garrison Artillery, Ottowa."

An officer of the battalion, writing to Mrs Styles, states that Pte. Archibald was a good soldier and a splendid fellow, and was well liked by his comrades."

"Sergeant W. Cruickshank, of the Stirlingshire Constabulary, Grangemouth, has received intimation that his eldest son, Leading Seaman William Cruickshank, "Hood" Battalion, Royal Naval Division, was killed in action on 13th November. He enlisted a few months after the outbreak of war, and has seen service in Salonika and France. He was 20 years of age, and prior to enlisting was employed as a ticket collector with the Caledonian Railway Company at Larbert."

"Mr John Duncan, Muirwells Crossings, Farnell, has received intimation that his son, Lance-Corporal John Duncan, H.L.I., has died at Angora, Turkey, where he was a prisoner of war. Lance-Corporal Duncan joined the Army shortly after the outbreak of war, and after being in France for a time was sent to Mesopotamia, and was wounded and taken prisoner at the relief of Kut. He was 22 years of age, and previous to enlisting was engaged with the Caledonian Railway Company at Alloa."

"Able Seaman David McDougall, a member of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, attached to "Hawke" Battalion, has died of wounds. His father Mr David McDougall, 7 Rosefield Street, Dundee, received intimation some time ago that his son had been dangerously wounded about the back and legs, and one of his legs had been amputated. Deceased, who was nineteen yearsof age, took part in the Dardanelles expedition, and suffered from dysentery. Prior to enlistment he was in the employ of the Caledonian Railway Company."

Named on the Gretna War Memorial in Dumfriesshire as:

JOHN G. DICKSON PTE. CAMERONIANS.
John Graham Dickson – age 19 – Private (1992) 1/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
John was employed by the Caledonian Railway Company when he enlisted at Motherwell just before the war. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in March 1915 but was killed at Festubert three months later. (Source: Daily Record 19/7/1915 p.6)
Born 1896 in Gretna. Son of Sarah Dickson of Redkirk Cottages, Gretna.
Missing in Action on 15 June 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
