The local newspaper "In Memoriam" column mentions the death of John McFarlane, Private 13821, 32nd Protection Company, Royal Defence Corps as accidently killed on 29 May 1917 on railway guard duty at Croy .
(Dumfries & Galloway Standard 29/5/1918 p.3)
Sadly it doesn't say which Croy and I cannot find the death on Scotlandspeople (but that's probably me )
Can anyone help, please.

Death was registered in Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire. The writing is a bit difficult to read...do you have Ancestry?

Thank you for that Anne.
Mark has kindly sent me a copy of the Register page and the location of his death was at Croy [near Kilsyth]
His age is shown as 58, so he didn't show up in my searches
It does make me wonder why some families were just so unlucky. _________________ Ken |

John McFarlane was my 3rd great uncle. He was born about 1859 in Neilston, Remfrewshire. He was a Militiaman on the 1891 Dumfries census. He died as a result of being "run down by a railway engine" East of the Croy Viaduct, Kirkintilloch (Fiscals report).
He is also on the Kingholm Quay Memorial along with his three son's who also died in WW1
L-cpl. John McFarlane - K.O.S.B. died 3 July 1916
Pvt Martin McFarlane - K.O.S.B. died 30 Sep 1915
Pvt. James McFarlane - K.O.S.B. died 6 May 1915
Also his grandson John McCall L-sgt - Scots Guards - Number: 2695616
died 28th December 1941 Acedebia, Lybia
Benghazi War Cemetery, Lybia (also on Dumfries memorial) |

Hi Irene and welcome to the Project.
Thank you for the confirmation of John McFarlane's details and for the family details of John McCall (on the Kingholm Quay page)
Judging from our e-mail chats about Kirkgunzeon, I'm sure you have lots of information to add to the Project and I look forward to seeing more. _________________ Ken |
