Morning Derek,

Been trawling through the Midlothian Advertiser for the umpteenth time and found this just last night!

Private James Irvine, No 25289, C Coy, 11th Platoon, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, was reported missing on 3rd May, 1917 and has never been heard of since. Any information regarding him from returned prisoners of war will be gratefully received by his mother, Mrs Irvine, 66 Main Street, West Calder. (Midlothian Advertiser 1918).

Now are you in my heid????

Also found Lance Corporal Patrick Condon, 2nd Bn. Royal Irish Rifles, died on 16 June 1915. Mmmmmh but Sgt on the War Memorial, away to check that out.

Down to just 15 missing now. I'd left a copy of my book on the War Memorial with the local Family History Library last year, and got an email from the head of the Local History Library in Linlithgow asking is they could purchase (??) two copies one for them and one for the Library in West Calder. I handed one to Linlithgow and another to West Calder Library yesterday with the message that there would be an updated version out before November this year. Fair chuffed with that.

Won't be doing another print run for a wee while and that was the last copies I had at the house. New print run will be lots better.

Cheers and thanks .............. Meg

Meg would it be possible to list the names that are still outstanding with the details (if any) you have for them. I keep losing track of who is left (it's an age thing) Confused

I've had a search for your two WW2 men (Campbell and Mathieson - is that right?) but without success.
Incidentally J. Campbell was Merchant Navy - not RAF, but I still cannot identify him.

Hello Ken,

Here's who's left, and I've added notes to who I think they are if I found anything!!

Panel 1

Sgt P Condon Royal Irish Fusiliers
No P Condon’s of the rank of Sgt on CWGC – Three on Service Returns but wrong age, name and rank. A Patrick Condon is enumerated in the 1911 census in Uphall.
Could this be him - 6545 Lance Corporal Patrick Condon, 2nd Bn. Royal Irish Rifles, died on 16 June 1915. Remembered with honour Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial

Panel 2

Pte Charles Bell Pte 2nd Cameron Highlanders –Cannot positively identify Charles, I’ve searched the 1901 and 1911 census and the only Charles Bell in the district is brother of William also on the Memorial – Charles died in 1920 from influenza, and I think that his parents included both sons on the memorial as they both served, there’s another instance recorded as someone was included though they died after the war but before the War Memorial was raised.

Pte Robert Blair Pte Royal Scots – 2 R Blair’s Royal Scots – one son of David Blair, Edinburgh – the other son of William Blair, Leith – Robert son of David & Catherine was born West Calder, but was younger than the 31 quoted on the CWGC site.

Pte Cameron Highlanders – no G Hardie with the Cameron Highlanders on CWGC
There is a George Hardie born West Calder, aged 18 in the 1911 census, with his parents David & Allison Hardie living in 5 Mungle Street, West Calder. He is a vanman in that census brother of John Hardie named on the Memorial – can’t find a death for him.

Pte M Hastie Pte HLI – No M Hastie’s on CWGC. Matthew Hastie enumerated on the 1911 census as living in Harburn Rows West Calder, died 1919 from influenza, did his family include in in the list of names for the War memorial?

Panel 3

Pte Alexander Martin Pte Royal Scots – 2 A Martin’s Royal Scots on CWGC – Alexander Martin born Kirknewton, may be the Grandson of Alexander Martin in West Calder whose son Thomas is on the memorial

Pte H Millar Pte MT RASC – can’t identify on CWGC - Henry Millar living in Uphall 1911 census

Pte J Millar Pte KOSB – can’t identify on CWGC

Pte R McDonald Pte 1st Cameron Highlanders – there are two R McDonald’s on CWGC Roll of Honour but can find no other information to 1911 census none found in or near West Calder.

Pte W McGuigan Pte Royal Irish Fusiliers – No W McGuigan on CWGC Roll of Honour, for Irish Fusiliers, but one for Royal Inniskillen Fusiliers. None listed in 1911 census for West Lothian

Pte J McKay Pte Seaforth Highlanders – 2 possible results for J McKay – can’t identify.

Pte J McKay Pte HLI – 6 possible results – can’t identify

Pte J McNulty Pte Royal Scots – two results for J McNulty – can’t identify correct one.

Pte J Nelson Pte Royal Scots – two possibilities – more research required. Two John’s and a James living in West Calder in the 1911 census

Stoker A McGuiloch Stoker 1st Class RN – nothing coming up on CWGC Debt of Honour under any spelling or wild card of the surname.

Panel 4 (WW2)

A/C J Campbell RAF – Cannot identify from CWGC Debt of Honour Roll.

I'd be interested in any comments on my theory on some of the names.

Many Thanks .................... Meg

PS - tell me about the age thing!!!

I've identified and found everyone on the War Memorial in West Calder and have several articles on most of them the only exceptions are:

Pte Alexander Martin Seaforths – more research. No return on A or Alex Martin on SNWM or CWGC Scotland’s People shows an Alex Martin aged 29 living with his widowed mother and siblings in the 1911 census,

Pte James Millar Pte KOSB – can’t identify on CWGC or SNWM

Pte James McNulty Pte Royal Scots – two results for J McNulty – can’t identify correct one. – Both born Ireland, no McNulty’s in 1911 census in West Lothian

Hopefully at some time I'll positively identify them!! Many thanks ..... Meg

Thank you for that Ken, much appreciated. Here's what I have so far on him, though I'm now ploughing through the "Courier" and gleaning ever more information on the West Lothian folks. Thanks again..
In Memory of Corporal James Archibald 43606, "C" Coy. 16th Btn. Highland Light Infantry who died age 28 on 26 August 1918. Son of James and Johan Archibald, of Limefield Mains, West Calder, Midlothian. M.A. Edinburgh University. Remembered with honour Daours Communal Cemetery Extension – Somme, France.
Local Soldier Killed – Mr & Mrs James Archibald, Limefield Mains, West Calder, received the sad news last Saturday that their eldest son Cpl James Archibald MA had died of wounds on the 26th August, 1918. He was wounded on the 23rd August and was taken to hospital where he passed away on the 26th. Cpl Archibald previous to enlisting was a teacher in Kelton Public School, Castle Douglas. He enlisted in April 1916 in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and was wounded in action last August. He made a good recovery and had returned to France where he was transferred to the HLI. He was well known and well respected in the District. Sincere sympathy will be felt for Mr & Mrs Archibald in their sad bereavement
Midlothian Advertiser 6th September, 1918.
West Calder Parish Church – at the close of the service in the Parish Church on Sunday last the preacher for the day he had been asked by the Rev Dr Anderson, who was unavoidably from home to make the following statement regarding the three losses which had been reported from the front during the past week; Pte Francis Grimlay, Royal Scots, Cpl James Archibald MA, HLI, and Pte Ernest Scott, Royal Scots.
Cpl James Archibald MA who was fatally wounded on the 23rd August and succumbed on the 26th August, was born and brought up in our midst. After receiving his primary training in the West Calder Public Schools, he passed on to Edinburgh university, where he in due course graduated in Arts. He had already decided to enter the teaching profession, and after passing through the training college he received an early appointment to Kelton Public School near Castle Douglas. Here, like so many of our promising youths he was quietly and usefully engaged when war broke out. He heard the call of his country and responded, enlisting in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in April 1916. After the usual training he crossed to France and took part in much heavy fighting during the spring and summer of 1917. In August of last year he was wounded, but not seriously. We mourn in him today the loss of one of our brightest and promising youths and our sympathies and prayers are extended to the grief stricken parents and members of his family.
Midlothian Advertiser 13th September, 1918.
Archibald – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Cpl James Archibald, who died of wounds August 26th 1918.
Though seas divide, to memory ever dear.
Midlothian Advertiser 22nd August, 1919.

Glad to share and to get more background from your local newspapers Very Happy
I haven't been able to pin down exactly at which school he was a master.
The only reference to him in the Dumfries & Galloway Standard is on 6 May 1916 which reports on the monthly meeting of the Kelton School Board (Kelton is the parish which included the Burgh of Castle Douglas)
The committee had received a letter from Mr. James Archibald, assistant master at Castle Douglas School, stating that he had been passed from home service, and was to report himself on the 5th of May at Edinburgh.
It was agreed to appoint Mrs Whiteley, Castle Douglas, to the position, and to pay Mr Archibald his salary, less what it might cost to engage the substitute.
