-----------------------
Gloucester Echo - 27 Jan 1942
Officially announced that HMS Barham has been sunk. Admiralty communiqué says:
" Board of Admiralty regrets to announce that HMS Barham ..has been sunk. Vice Admiral Pridham-Whippel is safe but Captain Cooke lost his life. HMS Barham was sunk on November 25, 1941. Next of kin of casualties were informed, but loss of ship was not announced since it was clear at that time that enemy did not know that she had been sunk, and it was important to make certain dispositions before loss of this ship was made public. German radio has from time to time made attempts with the obvious intention of endeavoring to discover whether battle ship of Queen Elizabeth class, which they claimed to have hit with torpedoes, had in fact been sunk. This information has been denied to enemy for reasons given above, but as it is clear that they are now aware that HMS Barham was sunk, her loss can be announced. "

That would have been a bitter blow for Rifleman McDonald's parents as the confirmation came in two weeks after VE-Day.

A filter of the CWGC database shows he was the last man in the battalion to die before the German surrender on Luneburg Heath on 4th May 1945.

I write "man" but at nineteen he was still really a boy.

A bit of a tangent - but it was a bad day for the Cameronians.
23 Riflemen from various battalions (mainly the 2nd) were killed that day and are buried in Becklingen War Cemetery.
