I have had the following copy of a photo for some time, and just discovered it was taken at Birnie War Memorial at the official unveiling in 1921.

I took a look on the British Newspaper Archive in case there might have been a mention which could date the event - and there certainly was.

The lady on the left is Nina, Countess of Seafield - aged about 15 or 16 at the time of the photo. As previously mentioned above- her father is commemorated on this war memorial.

I have transcribed the article as follows:

Aberdeen Journal, 4 October 1921

BIRNIE HEROES - MEMORIAL UNVEILED AND DEDICATED -
A memorial in honour of the men of the parish of Birnie, near Elgin, who fell in the war, was unveiled on Sunday by Nina, Countess of Seafield,
who was accompanied by Colonel Johnston [of] Lesmurdie, Mr Hadde de Popowicz, from Cullen House; Mr Angus Cameron, factor, Elgin; and Mrs Cameron.
There was a large company at the unveiling ceremony, which took place in the churchyard, where the memorial has been erected on the right-hand side of the approach to the church.

Birnie's Record.
Mr Alexander James, chairman of the Memorial Committee, briefly introduced the proceedings, and prayer was offered up by the Rev. John Kennedy, who also delivered a short address, in which he extolled the war record of the parish, mentioning that every available man at Birnie had joined the colours. Most of them had happily been spared to come back, though some of those would carry to their grave the wounds of the terrible conflict. Of those commemorated that day who did not come back they could only hold their name and deed in ever loving and honoured remembrance and teaching their children, and their children's children, what they owed to the glorious dead.

Names of the Fallen.
Nina ,Countess of Seafield, afterwards unveiled the memorial and Mr John Dean read the inscription and names which were as follows:-

Captain the Earl of Seafield, 5th Camerons
Private David Denoon, Seaforths
Private Robert M. James, Seaforths
Lance Corporal William Kemp, Seaforths
Private Alexander Logie, Seaforths
Gunner William Mackay, R.F.A. [Royal Field Artillery]
Piper John Pratt, Seaforths
Private William Robertson, Seaforths
Private John Smith Wiltshires

after the dedication prayer by Mr Kennedy, Piper Smith played "The Flowers of the Forest," and Mr John Hardie, Eastertown, conveyed the thanks of the people of Birnie to Nina, Countess of Seafield for coming to unveil the memorial.

Colonel Johnston, Lesmurdie briefly addressed the company, charging them to be worthy of the memory of the men whose sacrifice had been commemorated, so that the world might be a happier and better place to live in than it was before the war.

"The Last Post" was sounded on the bugle by Mr Sinclair Hunter. The memorial, which takes the form of a reproduction in freestone of the famous Norman arch in the Church of Birnie, surmounted by a cross, and having in the arch a grey granite panel bearing the names of the dead was designed by Mr. A.J. Morrison, Hillhead.
It bears the inscription -

Erected in proud and grateful memory of
the men connected with the parish of Birnie
who laid down their lives in the Great War.

Under the names given above are the words -

They gave their lives that we might live.

Note: The designer of the memorial AJ Morrison of Hillhead Farm, Birnie was Alistair (known as Alexander) James Morrison , architect, surveyor, farmer and valuer. Born 1883 died 1956 in Birnie. He was married to Josephine Helen Forsythe.

Moray Roll of Honour: MacKAY, William John. No. 84468, Gnr., Royal Field Artillery ; born at Kintessack, Parish of
Dyke, Forres, 25th Dec, 1896 ; joined at Elgin, 12th August, 1914 ; served in Dardanelles,
Egypt, and France ; died of wounds, 28th Sept., 1917, at Dozingham, and buried in the
British Cemetery at Westoletiren. Son of William and Margaret MacKay, The Terrace,
Lhanbryd. Occupation, maltman.

He must be a contender for the missing William McKay. The newspaper article does have his name spelled Mackay too, and his name does NOT appear on the Lhanbryde Memorial.
