I think i may have found the original location of most of those names. This a picture of the Darlington Church that sits on the corner of Main Street and North Harbour Street in Ayr. It is being cleared ready for sale from the council. There is a project gathering pace to help fund and turn it into a Columbarium. I was contacted by Gillian who has a facebook campaign and is behind the concept of that idea. She asked me If i could help identify the names on the original plaques.

That's interesting. The memorial Paul posted may well have been a new one created when a church merged, hence the names from the marble plaque and the other names.
Could it be the marble one was left in situ in Darlington Church and the new one was placed in another church? Borderline Theatre moved into the church in 1986 and it looks like the congregation moved out in the 1970s.
So, if we can find out which church the former Darlington UF merged with in the 1970s it should mean we can name the one Paul found in the Auld Kirk.
Thanks

I was wondering if there were any further updates on the memorial names. I have been doing my own searching and I am not having much luck. Is the problem that the names added to memorials are not always an exact match to birth/army names? |

I can see your problem - this man for example:
On the memorial he is GEORGE CARMICHAEL and on the Roll of Honour he is Private G. Carmichael 15th Bn. Royal Scots
CARMICHAEL, ROBERT GEORGE
Rank:Private
Service No:17578
Date of Death:01/07/1916
Age:19
Regiment/Service:Royal Scots 15th Bn.
Grave Reference:V. D. 5.
Cemetery:GORDON DUMP CEMETERY, OVILLERS-LA BOISSELLE
Additional Information:Son of Mary Carmichael, of "Arrandale," 4, Cassillis St., Ayr, and the late William Carmichael.
Born in Australia.
If you would like to tell us which of the others are a problem, we will try to help out. _________________ Ken |

Kenneth - thank you for confirming Robert George Carmichael. I have spent a fortune on Scotland's People trying to work out whose parents might be living in Ayr and attending the Church but they had their children somewhere else. As with George Carmichael he was not born in Ayr, but enlisted in Ayr.
I was wondering if Gordon Hewitt is John Gordon Hewitt S/1176 2nd Battalion of the Black Watch, born in Cumnock but enlisted in Ayr. I have just found in the 1911 census, he was living with his parents in Wallacetown. |

I think you are correct about Hewitt. I cannot see a viable alternative. _________________ Ken |
