Named on the Kirkcudbright War Memorial as:

LT. ALAN K. MOTHERSILL 1st Para. Sqn. RE
Alan Keith Mothersill – age 21 – Lieutenant (226306) Parachute Squadron, Royal Engineers.
Alan's father became minister of St. Cuthbert's Parish church in 1927 and Alan was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and at George Watson's College in Edinburgh from 1936 to 1939. He was studying Engineering at Edinburgh University when he enlisted in 1941 and he was commissioned in February 1942. Alan was killed, serving alongside the 2nd Parachute Battalion, in the cork forest of Tamera in north east Tunisia and he was buried there. Alan was re-interred in Tabarka in May 1944.
Born 1921 in Montreal, Canada. Son of the Revd. John Elmore Mothersill, who had served as a Chaplain in the Canadian Army in WW1, and of Eleanor Oughtred Mothersill, of St. Cuthbert's Manse, Kirkcudbright.
Killed in Action on 10 March 1943 and buried in Tabarka Ras Rajel War Cemetery, Tunisia.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy Memorial, on the George Watson's College Memorial and on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial.

Named on the Dornock Parish War Memorial in Dumfriesshire as:

KENNETH G. COMRIE
Kenneth Gordon Comrie – age 27 – Major (110479) Royal Army Veterinary Corps.
Kenneth was educated at Eastriggs School, Annan and Dumfries Academies and at the Royal (Dick) College of Veterinary Surgeons in Edinburgh from where he qualified in 1938. He was awarded his B.Sc. from Edinburgh University in 1939. He was commissioned in February 1940 and went to the Middle East in November 1942. He was killed by shell fire while assisting the 17th Indian Mule Company at San Michele near Monte Cassino.
Born 1916 in Sidi Salem, Egypt. Son of Leslie John and Catherine (Bickerton) Comrie of Sidi Salem, Egypt and of The Crescent, Eastriggs. Husband of Isobel Susan (Brebner) Comrie who he married in Hollingbourne, Kent in 1940.
Killed in Action on 12 February 1944 and buried in Cassino War Cemetery, Italy.

LESLIE C. COMRIE
Leslie Cameron Comrie – age 32 – Lieutenant (186389) Royal Corps of Signals.
Leslie was awarded his B.Sc. from Edinburgh University in 1932 and became an entomologist in the Zoology Department at University College, Dundee from 1935 -1938 before he left to study at Cambridge University prior to taking up a post with the Indian Tea Association at the Tocklai experimental station, Cinnamara in Assam in 1938. He was commissioned in May 1941 but died as the result of an accident while serving in the Arakan, Burma.
Born 1911 in Egypt, (but cannot confirm). Son of Leslie John and Catherine (Bickerton) Comrie of Sidi Salem, Egypt and of The Crescent, Eastriggs. Husband of Mona Kinnear (Adamson) Comrie of Sheffield who he married in St. Clement, Dundee in 1938. (Mona qualified M.B. Ch.B from St Andrew's in 1940 and became a doctor in Dundee)
Died on Active Service on 17 June 1943 and buried in Chittagong War Cemetery, Bangladesh.

Named on the Brydekirk Parish War Memorial, near Annan, Dumfriesshire as:

CAPT. JOHN VIVERS, 5th RSF.
John Vivers – age 25 – Captain, 1/5th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John was educated at Annan Academy, where he was dux in 1904, and at Edinburgh University 1906-1910 where he graduated M.A. (Honours, History) He became an English master at Ayr Academy and was living at 23 Fort Street in Ayr when he was commissioned in the 5th RSF in April 1914. John landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and was promoted to Captain in September but a month later he was killed.
Born 1890 at Millburn Farmhouse in Brydekirk. Son of William and Mary Viversof Millburn Farm, Brydekirk and of Manse Crescent, Brydekirk.
Killed in Action on 27 October 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Annan Academy War Memorial, on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen, on the Ayr Academy War Memorial and on the Ayr Burgh War Memorial.

Named on the St. Mungo Parish Memorial in the Parish Church in Kettleholm, Dumfriesshire.

WILLIAM B. CAMPBELL, MA
The Reverend William Barton Campbell – age 27 – Second Lieutenant, 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William had been educated at Lockerbie Academy and at Edinburgh University where he was a student of Arts and Divinity from 1909 to 1915. He had been awarded his M.A. degree in 1913 and was training to be a missionary. He was commissioned from the University Officer Training Corps in May 1915. He joined his battalion in Egypt and was killed at Gaza.
Born 1890 in St. Mungo. Son of Robert and Mary (Hourston) Campbell of Castlemilk Home Farm and of Howcleugh, Lockerbie who had married in Orkney in 1888.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial, on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen and on the Church of Scotland Ministers Memorial in St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh.

ROBERT B. CAMPBELL
Robert Burns Campbell – age 23 – Lieutenant, 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert had been educated at Christ's Hospital School and at Edinburgh University where he was a student of Science from 1911 to 1914. He was commissioned to the 5th KOSB from the University Officer Training Corps in November 1914 but was posted to the 6th Battalion in France.
Born 1894 in St. Mungo. Son of Robert and Mary (Hourston) Campbell of Castlemilk Home Farm and of Howcleugh, Lockerbie who had married in Orkney in 1888.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

Named on the Johnstone Parish War Memorial in Dumfriesshire as:

J. S. DUNDAS, KOSB.
James Strathearn Dundas – age 26 – Captain (100912) 7th (Airborne) Battalion (Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was educated at Edinburgh Academy and at Edinburgh University where he graduated M.A. in 1938. He was studying for a law degree and was a member of the Officer Training Corps when war was declared. He was commissioned in October 1939 and served with the 1st KOSB in France and Belgium before being evacuated from Dunkirk in May/June 1940. He was promoted to Captain in 1942 and was the second-in-command of “B” Company at Arnhem. James was buried in the hotel grounds at Hartenstein but was re-interred in August 1945.
Born 1918 in Selkirk, Selkirkshire. Son of William and Jess (Macintosh) Dundas of Shawpark, Selkirk. Husband of Edith Isabel (Walker) Dundas of Johnstone Manse who he married in 1942 in Johnstone.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1944 and buried in Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial, and on the Edinburgh Academy War Memorial.

The first of the Horsa gliders carrying the 7th Battalion KOSB landed at Arnhem on the first day of the battle, Sunday 17 September 1944, to secure the Ginkel Heath position, designated as DZ-Y for the 4th Parachute Brigade. On 25 September the battalion were defending the perimeter near Oosterbeek Hoog Railway Station and that night the survivors were withdrawn to cross back over the Rhine.

Named on the Annan War Memorial in Dumfriesshire as:

SINCLAIR, D. W. R.A.M.C.
David Williamson Sinclair – age 22 – Lieutenant, Royal Army Medical Corps attached to the 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
David was educated at Annan Academy before becoming a Student of Medicine at Edinburgh University in 1913. He joined the Medical section of the University's Officer Training Corps in 1916 and graduated M.B. & Ch.B. in July 1918. He was commissioned on 29 August and, after one week of training, he went to the Front. David died of wounds near Courtrai in Belgium and was buried in Harlebeke Churchyard but was re-interred in April 1950.
Born 1896 in Annan. Son of David and Agnes Williamson (Reid) Sinclair of 21 Johnstone Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 22 October 1918 and buried in Harlebeke New British Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan Academy memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

Named on the Annan War Memorial WW2 panels as:

CUTHBERTSON, W. G. Royal Navy.
William Graham Cuthbertson – age 24 – Surgeon Lieutenant, H.M.S. Dainty, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
William was educated at Annan Academy and at Daniel Stewart's College in Edinburgh before attending Edinburgh University. He graduated M.B. & Ch.B. in July 1939 before taking up posts at St. Luke's Hospital in Bradford. He was commissioned in April 1940 and served off Africa, Aden, India and in the Mediterranean. The destroyer “Dainty” had sailed on a patrol from Tobruk in Lybia but was attacked by a German Heinkel 111 aircraft whose bomb caused a magazine explosion. Survivors were taken off by HMS Hastie before the “Dainty” sank.
Born 1916 in Annan. Son of Robert Cuthbertson and of Olive Currie (Graham) Cuthbertson of Annan and of 14 Great Stuart Street, Edinburgh.
Nephew of Captain William Cuthbertson M.C. KOSB of Beldcraig, Annan.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 24 February 1941 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.

Buried in Annan Cemetery in Dumfriesshire.

WILLIAM BURT – age 21 – Pilot Officer/Navigator (129765) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
William was educated at Daniel Stewart's College in Edinburgh and was working in the town clerk's department while studying law at Edinburgh University when he enlisted in 1941. He was commissioned from Sergeant (1556981) in August 1942 and was onboard an Avro Anson from RAF Silloth in Cumberland which crashed near Wigton in Cumberland.
Son of William and Caroline Burt, of 28 Belmont Gardens, Murrayfield, Edinburgh.
His father had been an English master at Dumfries Academy, at Langholm and was at Linlithgow, West Lothian.
Grandson of John Richardson of The Bungalow, Annan.
Died on Service on 1 January 1943.
Commonwealth War Grave – Annan Cemetery.
Named on the Linlithgow War Memorial, on the Edinburgh University Roll of Honour and on the Old College Memorial.

Named on the Teviothead Parish War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

EDWARD J. ELLIOT MAJOR R.A.M.C.
Edward John Elliot – age 37 – Captain, 10th Stationary Hospital, Royal Army Medical Corps.
He had been educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh and at Edinburgh University where he studied medicine and graduated M.B., Ch.B. in 1904. He became a house surgeon at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford before he joined the RAMC as a Lieutenant in July 1906 and he was promoted to Captain three years later. He was at the Military Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1911 and he landed in France on 15 August 1914. Notice of his promotion to Major appeared after his death and was withdrawn. Edward was killed during an air raid on the hospital in St.Omer.
Born 1881 in Castleton, Roxburghshire. Son of the late John Elliot of Binks, Roxburghshire (died 1909) and of Jane Pott (Oliver) Elliot of Manvers House, Southsea, Hampshire. Husband of Dorothy Allin (Smith) Elliot of "Osmington," Canada Grove, Bognor, Sussex who he married in 1910 in Marylebone, London.
Killed by enemy action on 23 May 1918 and buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.

Named on the Hobkirk Parish War Memorial in Bonchester Bridge, Roxburghshire as:

2/LT. R.C. PRIMROSE, M.L.I.
Robert Cairns Primrose – age 20 – Second Lieutenant, 5th Mahratta Light Infantry.
Robert was educated at Edinburgh Academy and was an Arts student at Edinburgh University when he was called up in November 1940. He was commissioned in the Indian Army in May 1941 but was accidentally killed at Razmak in Waziristan on the north west frontier.
Born c.1921 in India. Son of the Rev. James Bartholomew Primrose, Church of Scotland Missionary and, from 1941, Garrison Chaplain at Poona, India, and of Mary Campbell Mallis (Smith) Primrose of Wauchope Cottage, Bonchester Bridge, Hobkirk and of Kirkton, Roxburghshire.
Rev. Primrose was minister at Kirkton Church from 1951 and at Roberton Church from 1955.
Died on Active Service on 12 January 1942 and buried in Karachi War Cemetery, Pakistan.
Also named on the Edinburgh Academy memorial.

Named on the Hownam Parish War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

LT. J.G.G. CUTHBERT.
John George Gunn Cuthbert – age 26 – Lieutenant, 28th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
John was educated at Hownam school and at Woodside Higher Grade School in Glasgow before studying the Arts (M.A. 1913) and then Divinity at Edinburgh University. He was a Cadet Corporal in the Officer Training Corps until March 1915 when he was commissioned in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He went to France in October 1915 and was attached to the MGC. John was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 October but died just under three weeks later.
Born 1890 in Hownam. Son of the late James Cuthbert, former schoolmaster at Hownam (died April 1916) and of Christina (Gunn) Cuthbert of Hownam, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 19 October 1916 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial, on the Woodside School memorial and on the Edinburgh University's Roll of the Fallen.

WMR 61983. The IWM call it 'Edinburgh University Alumni', which it is, but I hadn't managed to match them up, as being the same!
