Named on the memorial is FT/SGT. R. MUIR, Royal Air Force. I'm fairly certain that this is Ronald Charles Andrew Muir, Flight Sergeant (643697) R.A.F. who was born in Troqueer Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire in 1921. The Burgh of Maxwelltown in the parish of Troqueer was across the river from Dumfries. The burghs merged in the 1930's and SNWM shows his birthplace as Dumfries.

Ronald died on 28 July 1941 when his aircraft crashed near Kettering in Northamptonshire and his death was registered there. He is buried in Pudsey Cemetery, Yorkshire and is named on the War Memorial there. Damon Sugden, of the local Royal British Legion, is researching Ronald's connection with Pudsey and has uncovered an interesting story.

Ronald was recruited to serve in 90 Squadron of Bomber Command which had been specially formed to fly Boeing Fortress Mark 1 bombers supplied on a Land/Lease arrangement from the Americans and on that day the crew included 1st Lieutenant Laird W. Hendricks of the United States Army Air Corps This was some months before the USA entered the war.

In May 2007 a plaque commemorating the crew was installed in St. Botolph's Church in Stoke Albany, close to the crash site and details of this memorial and of background are at
http://www.airfieldinformationexchange.org/community/showthread.php?3783-Flying-Fortress-AN534-Memorial-Stoke-Albany

An update - from Damon Sugden of the RBL.
Pudsey and Stanningly News 8 August 1941

Young Pudsey Airman Killed
-------------------------------
Been many times on bombing raids
--------------------------------------
Twenty years old Ronald Charles Andrew Muir, flight sergeant wireless operator and air gunner in the RAF, was buried at Pudsey cemetery on Monday morning. His coffin was draped with the Union Jack.
Flight Sergeant Muir was the only son of the late Mr and Mrs John Muir of Dumphries, Scotland, but three years ago came with his grandmother, Mrs Armstrong, to live at 16 Prospect Avenue, Pudsey. He joined the Air Force over two years ago, volunteering to serve for six years. He rapidly gained promotion, and was made flight sergeant over a year ago.
He had been on many bombing raids over Germany and other enemy occupied countries and twice was he injured. He was killed in a flying accident last Monday, four days after his twentieth birthday..............
.......Before joining the RAF he was employed by Messrs. Appleyards (Leeds) Ltd.

SGT. (W.O./A.G.) JOHN RAGGENBASS, Royal Air Force.

John Raggenbass – age 21 – Sergeant, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner (971156) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Died 30 November 1940 and buried in Stockport (Willow Grove) Cemetery, Cheshire.
John was born in Dumfries in 1919, the son of Jacob Raggenbass ("Swiss subject") and of Agnes (McLachlan) Raggenbass of 7 St. Mary's Street, Dumfries. They had married in Glasgow in 1918.
At some stage after 1925 (when John's sister was born in Dumfries) the family moved to Stockport and in 1947 Jacob became a naturalized British subject.
John's Wellington bomber from the Reserve Flight of 214 Squadron based at RAF Stradishall, Suffolk took-off for a flight to Malta but during the flight experienced an engine failure and could not maintain height. It struck trees, crashed and caught fire at Elmdon, Essex. (Death registered at Saffron Walden, Essex)

A bit of an oddity.
The Cairns brothers (Arthur and John) were nephews of a Mr Grieg, a bootmaker, of Buccleuch Street in Dumfries and they are both named on the St. Michael's church memorial in Dumfries.
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1055

John Cairns of the 9th Black Watch is named on the War Memorial.
However Arthur Cairns, who served with the 1st KOSB and who was employed at the Arrol-Johnston works in Dumfries is not.

They are both named on the Scone War Memorial in Perthshire (their birthplace)

Date of Death: 26th October 1917
Decoration: M.C.
Place of Death: Unknown

1901 Census (transcription), Living at Buchanan Street, Balfron
Father Robert Dempster, age 34, Grocer & Draper (Shopkeeper), born Kirkcaldy
Mother Cecelia Dempster, age 32, born Portobello, Midlothian
DAVID B. DEMPSTER, age 5, Scholar, born Glasgow
Siblings Robert C. Dempster, age 7, Scholar, born Glasgow
William C. Dempster, age 3, born Glasgow
Grace Dempster, age 1, born Cambuslang

The following articles were all found in the Balfron Column of the Observer:

Stirling Observer, 10th November 1917, ‘Killed in Action’
It is with deep regret that we notice the death in action of Captain David B. Dempster, second son of Mr. Robert Dempster, grocer. Deceased was killed in France at the age of 22. When the war began he was attending Glasgow University. He received a commission in the K.O.S.B.’s and subsequently was promoted to a Captaincy. He went through the Gallipoli campaign, and was one of the last to leave the Peninsula. He subsequently saw service in Egypt and France. He was wounded at the first advance in the Somme. Deceased was a most likeable young man, and had every prospect of a successful future. Sincere sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Dempster and family in their irreparable loss.

Stirling Observer, 24th November 1917, ‘The Late Captain Dempster’
The Rev. Duncan Ross, B.D., in course of the forenoon service in St. George’s Church, Dumfries, on Sabbath, made fitting reference to the late Captain D. B. Dempster of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers. Is was with dismay and acute distress, the rev. gentleman said, we learned of Captain Dempster having fallen in battle on the 26th October. While at the head of his men in action in Flanders he was shot through the head, and thus passed instantaneously from the world for whose peace he fought many a fight and gave his young and distinguished life. He was the pride of his parents and the hero of his brothers and sisters.
Brimming over with mirth and joyaunte, clean and noble in spirit, he was an admirable boy, and one of our youngest and brightest communicants. He decided very early to go in for higher engineering and studied with diligence and distinction at Glasgow University, where he made many comrades and won their rich esteem. Captain Dempster got a commission in the K.O.S.B. in April 1915. He served first in Gallipoli and Egypt. He next served on the Somme and was wounded in action before Beaumont-Hamel. Later he was attached to a Border Regiment in Flanders and in one of the engagements there, was the only surviving officer to lead his company. He was made Captain in June last, though then but a boy of twenty-one.
His commanding officer has sent a letter of sympathy and appreciation to David’s father, and says: “Your son was a most excellent officer and a great favourite both with the officers and men. His place will be very difficult to fill. His men would go anywhere with him, as they had the greatest respect and confidence in him.”
He was but a boy, but seemingly a born leader of men. We feel very keenly for his parents and family in their very grievous loss, and we pray that God, who has surely crowned their gallant boy, will give them His comfort and healing grace.
Letters of sympathy and appreciation have been received by the family from Sir Donald McAllister, M.D., Principal of Glasgow University and numerous friends and fellow-officers.

Stirling Observer, 22nd December 1917, ‘Military Cross for Deceased Officer’
The “Gazette” of Monday announced that the Military Cross has been awarded to the late Mr. David B. Dempster, Second Lieutenant (Acting Captain) of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, attached to the Border Regiment.
The gallant young officer, who fell in action on 26th October, was the second son of Mr. Demspter, merchant, Dumfries, and formerly of Balfron and before the war was studying at Glasgow University with a view to the engineering profession. His promotion to the substantive rank of Lieutenant was gazetted after his death.

Commemorated: Glasgow University Roll of Honour
(Captain David Burns Dempster, 3rd King’s Own Scottish Borderers – Border Regiment. Degree: Student. Awards: Miltary Cross. Killed in action)

The Dempster family came to Dumfries in 1907 when the father took over a Drapery business in the town.
David attended the Dumfries Academy and he is named on the Memorial there, and on the St George's Church Memorial.

On doing some family history research last year I found a piece in Dumfries & Galloway Standard dated 3rd May 1941 on this man, my 1st cousin x2 removed

The piece reads:-
Relatives in Dumfries have received intimation from the War Office that Private James Donaldson Macfarlane (wrong spelling) Cameron Highlanders who resided at Queens Cottages, Brooms Road, Dumfries died in France with the British Expeditionary Force on the 1st of June 1940. Private Macfarlane was previously reported missing.

James Donaldson McFarlane was born on 30th November 1918 at 74 Queensberry Street, Dumfries. He was the youngest son of Patrick McFarlane and Johnanna (McDowell) McFarlane. His parents were both deceased when he enlisted with the Cameron Highlanders in June 1939.

Private Infantry.
Service Number 2930370 Theatre of War: France and Belgium Campaign, 1939/40
Regiment at Death: Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders
Branch at Death: Infantry
Burial France. Longuenesse St Omer Souvenir Cemetery. Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais
Plot 9, Row A, Grave 5
Age at death 21 years

source;UK Army Roll of Honour, CWGC

I believe the Cameron Highlanders were part of the rearguard on the retreat to Dunkirk in May/June 1940

On checking the Dumfries War Memorial I found his name was not on it.
It took several months of checking all agencies to find that his name does not appear on any other War Memorial.

His name has now been added to the Dumfries War Memorial

Good evening,

May I offer a bit further concerning P/M W.G.K. Mackie? There seemed to have been a question about his relationship to Dumfries. According to a news article I had read, his parents lived on Edinburgh Road, Dumfries. Perhaps this is your answer.

He had originally enlisted in the Seaforths at age 15 in 1901, eventually transferring to the 3rd K.O.S.B. and finally transferred to the 2nd Battalion in France. You may not have been aware of it but he was also awarded the "Silberne Medaille de St. Ernest" in 1910. And being a competitive Piper, he won the prestigious Gold Medal for piobaireachd at the Northern Meeting in 1909. Quite an achievement and exciting career.

Hopeful that some of this will be of interest.

War Office, 3rd June, 1919.
His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Meritorious Service Medal to the following Warrant Officers, Non-commissioned Officers and Men, in recognition of valuable; service rendered with the Armies in France and Flanders.

11537 Sjt.-Piper Mackie, W. C. K., 2nd Bn. (Edinburgh)

Don't know of any Dumfries connection.

For Robert McGuffog, the SNWM has him as Staff Sergeant and born Kirkcudbrightshire.

Just to add a bit more to the story:
PIPE MAJOR WILLIAM C. K. MACKIE, Hongkong Vol. Defence Corps.
William Craigie Keith MacKie – age 56 – Sergeant, Pipe-Major 2 Company, Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps, formerly of the King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was educated at Dumfries Academy and became a regular soldier with the Seaforth Highlanders. He served with the KOSB during the First World War and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal as 11537 Sjt.-Piper Mackie, W. C. K., 2nd Bn. (Edinburgh) In March 1929 William, Amelia and their family sailed for Hong Kong where he became a manager at Kowloon Docks, and later an engineer at Whampoa Dock. Pipe-Major Mackie was reportedly last seen alive on Christmas Eve, 1941, at Stanley, Hong Kong, playing the tunes "Cock O' the North" and "Heilan' Laddie" as the Japanese attacked.
Born 1885 in Newington, Edinburgh. Son of David Keith Mackie and of Isabella Bain (Craigie) Mackie of Edinburgh Road, Dumfries.
William, of 11 Terregles Street, Maxwelltown, Troqueer, was Pipe Major in the 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders when he married Janet McNeill of 48 Shakespeare Street, Dumfries in 1909 in Dumfries. Janet died in 1915 in Troqueer.
Husband of Amelia (Muir) Mackie of Manly, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia who he married in 1920 in Auchterderran, Fife.
Missing in Action on 24 December 1941 and named on the Sai Wan Memorial, Hong Kong, China.

William's brothers were killed in WW1.
Alfred Craigie Keith Mackie, Private (113) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, died 9 October 1915 aged 25.
Robert Craigie Keith Mackie, Corporal (14675) 4th Regiment, South African Infantry, died 29 April 1918 aged 34.

Robert certainly lived in Dumfries at one time (1901) but neither he nor Alfred seem to be named on any memorial, anywhere.

As Anne says, SDGW indicates that Peter was born in, was resident in, and enlisted in Dumfries. However his Medal Card has a contact address of Mrs. Elizabeth Robertson of 8 Flourmill Brae, Aberdeen in October 1920 and the Army Register of Soldiers effects has the same name as the guardian of his daughter Annie, born 4/9/1908. Annie McRae Cormack was born then and, although classified as illegitimate, both her father Peter Cormack and mother Jessie B Cooper are named on the register.
Peter aged 28 and Jessie aged 27 married the following year in Aberdeen but in 1910 Jessie Burr McRae Cooper Cormack died. On the marriage register Peter's parents are shown as Peter and Elizabeth (Gerrard) and the 1881 census for St Nicholas Aberdeen has Peter Cormack 28, Elizabeth Gerrard 40, Elizabeth Gerrard 17, Robina Gerrard 16. Peter Cormack 1.

So it looks as though Peter was born in Aberdeen and may have been in Dumfries after 1911?????

IN THE COURTS. ABERDEEN CHILD DESERTER. Peter Cormack, labourer, lately residing in Stonehaven, was before Hon. Sheriff-Substitute Douglas Duncan at Aberdeen yesterday charged the instance of the inspector of poor of Aberdeen with deserting his three-year-old child on 15th July in a house in Shoe Lane, or with neglecting to maintain his child between July and Wednesday. Accused pleaded guilty desertion. Mr Williams, inspector poor, who prosecuted, said the child became chargeable to the parish on July, and bill had been run up to the amount of £4 4s for maintenance. This was a most heartless and deliberate case of desertion. Accused had been working regularly, and never inquired after his child. He left it to the tender mercies of anybody who cared to pick it off the streets. The Parish Council was suffering desperately hard in this respect, deserted children cost the Parish Council £504 year. Sentence of two months' imprisonment was passed.

Anne - It could well be the same man. In the various registers (BMD) he is described as a labourer however his daughter was born in 4/9/1908 and the report above appeared in Aberdeen Journal - Friday 26 September 1913 Page 3 (from your PM to me) so she would have been five years old.
There again the newspaper might have got that wrong - surely not Rolling Eyes

Anyway, what an interesting story! And it could explain why he ran off to Dumfries - to get as far as possible from the law.
Many thanks for finding this Anne.
