Unknown why said plaque has come to be in the Cathedral.

KELSO TOWN and DISTRICT WW1 WAR MEMORIAL.

PTE. WILLIAM AFFLECK.
William Redshaw Affleck – age 39 – Private (23696) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a gamekeeper at Gateshaw, Morebattle, Roxburghshire when he enlisted. He was serving with the battalion's Lewis Gun Section when he was killed.
Born 1877 in Morebattle. Son of the late Robert Affleck (died 1908) of Gateshaw, Morebattle and of Catherine (Carruthers) Affleck of 57 Roxburgh Street, Kelso.
Killed in action om 8 January 1917 and buried in Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.
Also named on the Morebattle Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JOHN AITCHISON.
John Aitchison – age 19 – Private (S/10298) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but was killed four months later during the battle at Loos.
Born 1895 in Roxburgh as John William Aitchison. Son of John and Jane (Pringle) Aitchison of Floors, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church.


PTE. WILLIAM AITCHISON

William Robertson Aitchison – age 23 – Private (S/7382) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was a ploughman at Blakelaw Farm, Linton, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined his battalion in France in March 1915 and served there until they moved to Italy in November 1917. William died from shell wounds in the 39th Casualty Clearing Station at Montecchio Precalcino near Vicenza.
Born 1894 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of John (died December 1918) and Catherine (Dalgleish) Aitchison of Blakelaw Farm, Linton.
Died of Wounds on 13 July 1918 and buried in Montecchio Precalcino Communal Cemetery Extension, Italy.
Also named on the Linton Parish War Memorial.

Robert Johnston Alexander – age 37 – Rifleman (3687) 1/8th Battalion, London Regiment (Post Office Rifles)
Robert had been a rural postman, based at Kelso, since 1898. He enlisted in April 1915 and joined his battalion in France in 1916.
Born 1879 in Roxburgh. Son of the late William Alexander (died 1902) and of Frances or Fanny Lightly (Johnston) Alexander of Rose Cottage, Roxburgh.
Missing in Action on 21 May 1916 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Roxburgh Parish War Memorial.


PTE. ROBERT ALLAN.
Robert Allan – age 19 – Private (53533) 14th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Robert was an apprentice chemist in Kelso when he enlisted.
Born 1898 in Kelso. Son of James and Grace (Dickson) Allan of 2 Havannah Court, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 27 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


DRIVER ALFRED ANDERSON.
Alfred Ross Anderson – age 33 – Private (CMT/1641) 788th Mechanical Transport Company, Army Service Corps.
Alfred was a bus driver at the Cross Keys Hotel in Kelso when he enlisted at the outbreak of war and he landed in France on 16 August 1914. He was attached to the 6th Division's Ammunition Park. The 788th MT Company was formed in September 1916 as the Ammunition Column for 159 Heavy Battery in Mesopotamia. Alfred was evacuated back to the UK and died of mental health issues in the Dykebar War Hospital in Paisley, Renfrewshire.
Born 1882 in Stockbridge, St. George, Edinburgh as Alfred James Ross Anderson. Son of Alfred Merchant Anderson and of Maria Jane (McDonald) Anderson of Edinburgh. Husband of Annie (Tait) Anderson of 22 Square, Kelso who he married in 1912 in Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 8 November 1917 and buried in Kelso Cemetery. (CWG)

George Anderson – age 33 – Private (375616) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
In 1911 George was an assistant gamekeeper living at Kersmains, Roxburgh and was head gamekeeper with the Duke of Roxburghe, who he had served for 15 years, when he enlisted.
Born 1883 in Eckford, Roxburghshire. Son of the late William and Betsy Anderson of Eccles Tofts Farm, Eccles, Berwickshire. Husband of Isabella (Broomfield) Anderson of Moor Cottage, Roxburgh and of Baillie Knowe Farm, Kelso, who he married in 1914 in Roxburgh.
Missing in Action on 8 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Roxburgh Parish War Memorial.


PTE. HENRY ANDERSON.
Henry Anderson – age 28 – Private (22754) 18th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers
Harry worked for Mr. McLean, Merchant, in Kelso when he enlisted. He was posted as Private (175497) to the Royal Field Artillery but was transferred as Private (916) to the King's Shropshire Light Infantry and then to the Lancashire Fusiliers. Harry was buried in Ste. Emilie British Cemetery, Villers-Faucon but was re-interred in 1930.
Born 1887 in Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of Henry and Janet (Pringle) Anderson of 31 Bowmont Street, Kelso. Husband of Margaret (Anderson) Anderson of 60 Wood Market, Kelso who he married in 1914 in Kelso. Margaret died in 1918.
Died of Wounds on 26 July 1917 and buried in Templeux-Le-Guerard British Cemetery, Somme, France.


PTE. ANDREW ARMSTRONG.
Andrew Armstrong – age 26 – Private (184030) 10th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Andrew was farming when he enlisted at Calgary, Alberta in December 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in June 1916 and joined his battalion in France at the end of August but he was wounded a month later and died in the 6th General Hospital in Rouen.
Born 1890 at Mosstower in Eckford, Roxburghshire. Son of John and Caroline (Wilson) Armstrong of Kersknowe, Eckford.
Died of Wounds on 1 October 1916 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
Also named on the Eckford Parish War Memorial.

In 1901 John, aged 20, was an apprentice tailor with Thomas Cairns in Morebattle, Roxburghshire and he had worked as a tailor in Kelso for some years when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1880 in Jedburgh as John Brown Ballantyne. Son of Thomas and Helen (Brown) of 8 Croft Street, Galashiels, Selkirkshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Galashiels War Memorial.


PTE. WILLIAM BARNETT.
William Scott Barnett – age 22 – Private (7583) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William enlisted in Kelso and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1892 in Dunbar, Haddington, East Lothian. Son of Thomas and Jessie (Scott) Barnett of Innerwick, East Lothian and of New Buildings, Morebattle, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallpoli, Turkey.

SERGT. THOMAS BIGGAR. M.M.
Thomas Biggar, Military Medal – age 21 – Sergeant (40126) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Thomas joined his battalion in France in 1916. He was wounded twice and was awarded a M.M. for bravery in the field in 1917.
Born 1896 in Kelso. Son of Robert and Jane (Patterson) Biggar of Heiton, Roxburgh.
Killed in Action on 16 July 1918 and buried in Le Peuplier Military Cemetery, Caestre, France.
Also named on the Roxburgh Parish War Memorial.

CAPT. JAMES BLACK.
James Black – age 28 – Captain, United States Army Infantry.
James was educated at Kelso High School and in 1911, aged 19, he was an apprentice with a law agent in Kelso. He was a law clerk when he sailed from Liverpool for Boston, USA in September 1913. James was living in Butte, South Dakota, USA when he was drafted for military service in December 1917. He was discharged due to illness in December 1918.
Born 1891 in Kelso. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Spiers) Black of 15 Sheddon Park Road, Kelso.
Died on 6 February 1919 and buried in Pine Slope, Cemetery, Belle Fourche, Butte, South Dakota.
His brother Walter Norman Black, age 22, 2nd Lieutenant, 4th KOSB died of tuberculosis at the family home in Kelso on 19 August 1920 and is buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in Kelso Cemetery, but he is not named on the War Memorial.
Walter was a joiner when he enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB as Private (612) in November 1912. He served in the Reserve Battalion until, as Lance Sergeant (200049) he was selected for officer training in June 1918. He was rejected by the RAF but was commissioned in the KOSB in February 1919.
The brothers are named on the Kelso High School memorial and on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial.


PTE. WILLIAM BLACK.
William Black – age 20 – Private (55880) 1/5th (City of Glasgow) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
William enlisted in Kelso.
Born 1898 in Stichill, Roxburghshire. Son of William and Margaret (Thomson) Black of Stitchill.
Missing in Action on 24 August 1918 and named on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.
Also named on the Stichill Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JAMES BOYLE.
James Boyle – age 28 – Private (21751) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a ploughman at Marlefield, Eckford, Roxburghshire when he enlisted.
Born 1888 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
Son of the late John Boyle (died 1909) and of Margaret (Moore) Boyle of Eckford and of Roxburgh Newtown, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 24 January 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

James Brannan – age 19 – Private (59410) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was an upholsterer in Kelso when he enlisted as Private (2/17971) in the 56th Training Reserve Battalion in April 1917. He was posted as Private (38182) to the 2nd Scottish Rifles in France in March 1918 but was transferred to the 12th Royal Scots on 9 April and was killed two weeks later.
Born 1899 in Borthwick, Midlothian. Son of the late Elizabeth (Queenan) Brannan (died 1906) and of James Brennan of 157 Roxburgh Street, Kelso.
He named his aunt, Hannah Brannan of 157 Roxburgh Street, Kelso, as his foster mother and next-of-kin.
Missing in Action on 25 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Church of the Immaculate Conception (St Mary's) memorial in Kelso.


CORPL. WILLIAM BROCKIE.
William Russell Brockie – age 22 – Private (200693) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was resident in Morebattle when he enlisted in November 1914. As Private (7143) he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1894 in Leith South, Edinburgh. Son of the late Jemima (Russell) Brockie (died 1900) and of Robert Brockie, and step-son of Mary (Kelly) Brockie (widow, formerly Mrs Dalgleish) of 21 Magdala Terrace, Galashiels, Selkirkshire who married in 1901 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Morebattle Parish War Memorial.
William named his brother Robert Brockie, Private (9061) 2nd Dragoons, Royal Scots Greys in his Soldier's Will, and the family details are derived from Robert's Service/Pension records.
Robert Brockie, born 1896 in Leith South, was an apprentice butcher in the High Street, Galashiels when he enlisted in May 1914. He served throughout the war and was discharged in October 1920.


PTE. JAMES BROWN.
James Brown – age 34 – Private (467042) 13th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
James had served his apprenticeship in Sprouston, Roxburghshire and was a carpenter in Calgary, Alberta when he enlisted in July 1915. He sailed from Montreal in September 1915 and landed in France in January 1916. He joined his battalion in February but was killed two months later.
Born 1882 in Sprouston. Son of the late Agnes (Tait) Brown (died 1905 in Sprouston) and of Walter Brown of Morebattle, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 1 April 1916 and buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) Belgium.
Also named on the Sprouston Parish War Memorial.

James was a slater when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed with the 9th Battalion in France in July 1915 and was transferred to the 8th Battalion.
Born 1889 in Leicester as James Philip Brownlee. Son of Adam Brownlee (died 1907) and Ellen (Dodds) Brownlee of Galashiels, Selkirkshire. Husband of Jeanie or Jane (Amos) Brownlee (from 1917 Mrs. James Prentice) of 5 Union Street, Kelso who he married in 1910 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire.
Killed in Action on 12 December 1915 and buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) Belgium.
Also named on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial as James P. Brownlie and on the Galashiels Roll of Honour as James P. Brownlee.


PTE. ROBERT BRUCE.
Robert Bruce – age 35 – Private (S/14943) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Robert was a butcher in Kelso when he enlisted in July 1916.
Born 1882 in Kelso. Son of Robert and Margaret (Ramsay) Bruce of 1 Jamieson's Entry, Kelso. Husband of Lilian (Baird) Bruce of 24 Horse Market, Kelso and of 122 Roxburgh Street, Kelso. (from 1922 Mrs William Horsburgh) who he married in 1905 in Mussleburgh, Midlothian.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


PTE. JAMES BRUNTON.
James Brunton – age 24 – Private (7249) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a farm servant at West or East Morriston Farm, Earleston/Legerwood, Berwickshire and as a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was wounded during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah and was evacuated to hospital in Alexandria, Egypt where he died.
Born 1891 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire. Son of Thomas and Mary Jane (Smith) Brunton of Haymount, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 17 July 1915 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Gordon Parish War Memorial, Berwickshire.

John Brunton – age 23 – Private (T/207303) 2nd Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment)
John enlisted as Private (270604) in the Hertfordshire Regiment. He was posted as Private (15769) to the 8th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry and landed with them at Le Havre in September 1915 before being transferred to The Queen's. His remains were recovered from the battlefield and were re-interred at Buttes in March 1920.
Born 1894 at Longnewton in Ancrum, Roxburghshire. Son of Mark and Isabella (Wood) Brunton of Easter Softlaw, Sprouston, Roxburghshire and of Bridgeheugh, Selkirk.
Killed in Action on 4 October 1917 and buried in Buttes New British Cemetery, Polygon Wood, Belgium.
Also named on the Sprouston Parish War Memorial.


PTE. GAVIN BUCHANAN.
Gavin Buchanan – age 29 – Private (S/7265) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Gavin enlisted in Kelso in November 1914 and joined his battalion in France in March 1915 but he was killed three months later when his wire-cutting party was hit by machine gun fire.
Born 1886 in Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland. Son of Gavin and Mary (Bell) Buchanan of Gunsgreenhill, Ayton, Berwickshire. Husband of Agnes Logan (Middlemass) Buchanan of Hapertoun Farm, Kelso and of Corsbie, Earlston, Berwickshire who he married in 1913 in Ednam, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 18 June 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Ednam Parish War Memorial.


PTE. ALEXANDER BUDDO.
Alexander Buddo – age 21 – Private (38269) 1/4th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Alexander was posted to the 2nd Royal Scots in France and was transferred to the 17th Battalion before being transferred again to the 1/4th (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) His remains were recovered from the battlefield and re-interred in October 1919.
Born 1898 in Kelso. Son of William and Joan (Young) Buddo of 1 Peat Wynd, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 27 August 1918 and buried in Wancourt British Cemetery, France.

LIEUT. ANDREW BULMAN.
Andrew Bulman – age 25 – Lieutenant, 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was educated at Kelso High School and at Shrewsbury School in Shropshire until 1907. He then worked in a business office in Kelso for two years before entering the Edinburgh College of Science to study Architecture and Constructional Drawing. He was a builder and joiner in Kelso and a member of the local rugby club when he was commissioned from Private in the Territorial 4th KOSB in December 1912. He was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1889 in Kelso. Son of the late Andrew Bulman (died 1909) and Mary Helen (Roderick) Bulman of Pringle Bank, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915. and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Kelso High School and Shrewsbury School War Memorials.


PTE. JOHN BURTON.
John Burton – age 20 – Private (200124) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a pre-war member of the Territorial 4th KOSB as Private (748) and he joined his battalion in Palestine in 1916.
Born 1897 in Kelso as John Waddell Burton. Son of Thomas and Agnes (Waddell) Burton of 49 Horse Market, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.


PTE. GEORGE CAIRNS.
George Alexander Cairns – age 18 – Private (7148) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George enlisted in November 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1897 in Hownam, Roxburghshire. Son of James Oliver Cairns and Catherine (Cairns) Cairns of Whitton, Morebattle and of Monklaw, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallpoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Morebattle Parish War Memorial.

PTE. FREDERICK K. CALLANDER.
Frederick Kellor Callander – age 19 – Private (7197) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Fred was employed at Rumbletonlaw Farm, Greenlaw, Berwickshire (but just to the north of Stichill, Roxburghshire) when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 at Turfbeg in Forfar as Frederick Soutar Callander. Son of Jane Callander. Grandson of William and Catherine (Milne) Callander of Forfar.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Gordon Parish War Memorial, Berwickshire, on the Stichill Parish War Memorial and on the Forfar War Memorial.

L/CORPL. WILLIAM CALLANDER.
William Callander – age 26 – Lance Corporal (201061) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William, also of Greenlaw, enlisted as Private (7958) in the 3/4th KOSB in July 1915. He was posted to the 1/4th KOSB in Egypt in 1916 and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1891 in Eassie and Nevay, Forfar. Son of Alexander and Christina (Easson) Callander of Stichill Cottage, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Gordon Parish War Memorial and on the Stichill Parish War Memorial.


PTE. PETER CAMPBELL.
Peter Campbell – age 36 – Private (S/40021) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Peter enlisted in December 1915 as Private (4937) and was posted to the 2nd Seaforths before transferring to the 7th Battalion.
Born 1881 in Kildonan, Sutherland. Son of Peter and Elizabeth (Gilchrist) Campbell of Golspie, Sutherland. Husband of Jane (Millar or Robson) Campbell of 46 Wood Market, Kelso who he married in 1903 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial and on the Golspie War Memorial.

2nd LIEUT. H. R. STANLEY CLARKE.
Hugh Reginald Stanley Clarke – age 25 – Second Lieutenant, 11th (Reserve) Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, attached to the 1st Battalion.
Hugh was educated in Kelso, at St. Oswald's College, Ellesmere, Salop and at Cheltenham College in Gloucestershire, and was a well known local and national hockey player, before he sailed for Singapore to take a post as a planter with the Cheviot Rubber Estate Company in the Federated Malay States in May 1913. He returned in February 1915 and enlisted as Private (1571) in the Middlesex Regiment but was selected for officer training and was commissioned in May 1915. He was posted to the 1st Gordon Highlanders in France in July 1916 but was killed within weeks at Guillemont on the Somme.
Born 1891 in Inverkip, Renfrewshire. Son of the Rev. Walter John Clarke and Sarah Alice Maud (Noott) Clarke of The Rectory, St Andrew's Episcopal Church, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 18 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial, on the St. Andrews Church memorial and on an individual memorial in the church.


L/CORPL. RALPH COULTER.
Ralph Coulter – age 19 – Private (200766) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Ralph as Private (7284) landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1898 at Middlefield, Langton, Berwickshire. Son of the late William Coulter (died 1902) and of Mary Catherine (Scott) Coulter. Step-son of Alexander Hastie who Mary married in 1908 in Edinburgh. In 1911 in the whole family were living in Linton, Roxburghshire. (Ralph, 13 and George, 11 are indexed as Courter) and from 1915 were at Bankhead Farm, Linton.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Linton Parish War Memorial.
