UKNIWM Ref: 44425

Location is St Margaret's Episcopal Church, New Galloway - OS Map Ref: NX 635 779

According to UKNIWM, the lights are Christ in the centre, Mary on the left and an unknown figure on the right. Anyone have an idea who it is? Presumably a saint, but is the book a clue?

Lt Upton is buried in a prominent position in Balmaclellan Parish Church churchyard. Transcription of the grave:

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF/ LIEUTENANT JOHN HENRY UPTON SPALDING RN/ ELDEST SON OF JOHN EDEN SPALDING ESQrr OF HOLM & SHIRMERS/ BORN 19TH APRIL 1834 WHO WAS KILLED BY A CANNOBALL IN THE TRENCHES BEFORE SEBASTOPOL 21ST JANUARY 1855/ “MAY HE REST IN HOPE AND RISE IN GLORY THROUGH THE MEDIATION OF JESUS CHRIST OUR BLESSED LORD AND SAVIOUR”/ “THEY THAT SEEK ME EARLY SHALL FIND ME, PROVERBS v 8:17

I came across another plaque in the same church, very small, but very interesting. It is not a war memorial so does not qualify for an entry in its own right but the two generals listed are from the same family as this memorial (although I have not identified the exact relationship) and the accompanying explanation is well worth the read.

Spoons

Perhaps because this memorial ended up in Ne Galloway because of a bombing raid in 1944 it can be considered a war memorial in its own right? It's better where it is though.

The older Honourable Arthur Percy Upton was a veteran of the Peninsula Campaign. He was born in 1777 and died in 1855. I got the following from the Wisden Cricket Almanack Archive!

I have just found out that the man's name was actually John Henry Upton Spalding (so Spalding not Upton) - something to do with the family having to add on the name in order to inherit the estate I think. I will change the title and in the list.

The third figure in the window is St John.

It was designed by C E Kempe and dates from 1905.
