Not listed on UKNIWM.

Located in the centre of Kirkcudbright beside the main civic war memorial at OS Map Ref NX 683 511.

A brass plaque inside the church shows that the church was dedicated to the memory of Lt George Leslie Reid and therefore the whole church should be considered as a memorial. This is one of our larger memorials and it is quite surprising that it is not listed on UKNIWM given its prominent location in the centre of a tourist town.

The church stands on the Mote Brae, a man-made grassy mound. Originally a Franciscan Friary founded around 1455, it became the Parish Church in around 1570. The church fell into disrepair and was demolished following a petition in 1728 except for the MacLellan Aisle which was retained. In 1730 a new and much larger church was built. By 1839 the new Parish Church had been built a few hundred yards away and this church was again razed except for the MacLellan Aisle. It was again rebuilt as the Old Church or Castle school and remained a school until 1915 when it was disbanded. Meanwhile the Episcopal church was sited in a tin hut. In 1919 the school buildings were bought by Lady Watts and restored as a church in memory of her son Lt Reid, then donated to the Episcopal church of Scotland. Major repairs took place in 2003/04 and this is now a beautiful and unusual church.
