Captain John Woodburn Memorial
Location:St John’s Episcopal Church, Junction of Lothian Road and Princes Street, Edinburgh
OS Ref: NT 247 736

At the base of this memorial is another memorial to John Woodburn's great grand nephew who died in the Second World War. I will post it in another thread.

To
The Honoured Memory of
Captain John Woodburn
44th Bengal Native Infantry,
And Commandant
Of the 5th Disciplined Hindostanee
Regiment of Infantry
In the service of His Majesty the late
Shah Soojah-Ool-Moolk
Who nobly fell
At the head of a small band
Of devoted followers,
In action with an overpowering number
Of Ghilzie Insurgents
Near Ghuznee in Afghanistan
On the 4th of November 1841.

This Cenotaph
Has been erected by the surviving
British Officers of that Service
Friends and Companions in Arms,
Who-deeply lamenting his untimely fate
Knew and admired
Hhis great skil as a soldier
His sterling worth
And honesty as a man
