I think you are right Ken. If he was discharged and died within the same month, there may be a good case.

I don't see a matching death in Scotland but there is a George Menzies aged 37 who died in the December Quarter of 1917 at Hartley Whitney in Hampshire.

Elvetham Hall in Hartley Whitney was a hospital in the First World War. He may have died there?

By 'Googling' Hartley Whitney, Hampshire, lots of articles come up amongst which is 'The National Sanatorium for Consumption and Diseases of the Chest, Bournemouth, Hampshire.'

That might confirm that it was (as Ken found), where George Menzies died.

I downloaded his Service File which clearly states that the cause of his discharge (TB) was definitely attributed to active service- it’s all there in black and white – the ‘medical’ pages are stamped by ‘Connaught Hospital, Aldershot’, dated 22nd November 1917.

Got a message from Douglas on the Great War Forum that
"Via the BNA, there are a number of mentions about BSM George Menzies in the Stirling Observer in the early part of 1918. From the paper of 12 January 1918, the paper mentions he died in a hospital in Aldershot and had been gassed three times. In February 1918, the paper also indicated he was the step son of George Henshilwood."

From that I've worked out that George Menzies was born in Drymen in 1880 to Catherine Menzies. In 1887 Catherine married George Henshilwood in Drymen and they had 4 children including Jean (step-sister to George Menzies)
Catherine died in 1897, in Drymen.
George Henshilwood, a retired postman aged 79, died in Drymen in 1943.

Great stuff Anne Very Happy

Just to round it off (although it caused me a bit of panic) the 1911 census at Drymen has
George Henshilwood 46 and Mary A. Henshilwood 42.
However his death register entry shows 1st wife; Catherine Menzies (she died in 1897) 2nd; Mary Ann Harkness (who he married in 1910 in Glasgow) The death was registered by his son, W A Henshilwood.

The Stirling Observer of 12 January 1918 reported
"SOLDIER'S FUNERAL - The remains of Srgt. Major George Menzies were laid to rest in Drymen Churchyard on Friday afternoon. There was a service in the church, and on Sabbath the Rev. J L Howat made sympathetic reference to the sad event. This is the first local soldier who has been interred in our churchyard since the war began."

Since George Menzies is now a "non-com" case, and to avoid duplicates posts, any updates will be posted on: http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-post-71548.html#71548

By co-incidence, there was another George Campbell living in Drymen, (also Argylls) but possibly only in the district as a seasonal worker, details as follows:

Age at discharge 23 years 6 months (Length of service: 339 days)
Intended place of residence: Academy Street, Tain, Ross-shire

No Silver War Badge award record found.

By yet another co-incidence, there was another George Campbell (also Argylls) with no connection to the district, but enlisted in the same regiment on the same day, at the same place, were killed on the same day and it appears (by their grave references) that they share a communal grave. Anne
George Campbell on the Drymen memorial seems to be the same man as the one on the Stirling civic memorial. I posted on Page 5 of the Stirling civic thread my struggles to find the right one between the two killed and buried together - http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=59&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=60

His sister Nettie (Janet) lived in Stirling.

(Not that I had NEARLY the same quantity of information that you have!!)

Strange that George was commemorated on Stirling Civic & Stirling Burgh Roll of Honour but Dugald wasn't.

Maybe Dugald and his sister Janet (Nettie)of Nasmyth Villa had fallen out - her name has been scored out on his effects document, or had she passed away?

Over to you Sandra - another wee mystery for you to solve!!
