Balfron - Stirling District
Balfron war memorial takes the form of a tall cairn with a very attractive bronze memorial tablet set into the face. The memorial stands on a small island in the main street in front of the kirk.

(Glasgow Herald 12th April 1915)
"Mr William Montgomery, 44 Crown Avenue, Radnor Park, Clydebank, has received official intimation that his son Lance-Corporal Wm. Montgomery (10037) 1st Scots Guards, has been killed. Mr Montgomery Sen,. also has a house at Balfron, and his family were all born there. Mr Montgomery is a contractor, and his son was working with him at Clydebank when he joined the Scots Guards at the beginning of September. He was sent to France the first week of December, and was promoted lance-corporal. He died from wounds sustained in one of the engagements, his death taking place in the Anglo-American Hospital , Boulogne. He was only 22 years of age."

"Mrs Craig, Viewfield, Balfron, has received official intimation that her second son, Private Guthrie Craig, has been killed in the Dardanelles. Private Craig, who was about 26 years of age, emigrated to Australia about three years ago, and had joined the 4th Australian Imperial Force on the outbreak of the war. He was born at Cambuslang."

Stirling Observer, 2nd December 1916, Killed in Action – Lance Corporal James Tait Fyfe’
The news of another death through this cruel war in the person of Lance Corporal James Tait Fyfe, second son of Mr. James Fyfe, Station-master, has caused feelings of deep regret. Lance Corporal Fyfe was the second son of Mr. James Fyfe, agent, Balfron Station. He enlisted shortly after war was declared and after the short period of six weeks in which he was in training, he went to France. He was gassed, but after recovery went to the front again. He had been in the fighting since. He was killed in action on the 16th November. Deceased was 22 years of age, a most likeable young man, refined, intelligent above average and to all appearance had a successful future. He was educated at Balfron Public School and also in Linlithgow Academy. Mr. nand Mrs. Fyfe and family have the deep sympathy of the community in their sore trial.
