Not listed on UKNIWM

Location: Devils Porridge Museum, Eastriggs, Grid Ref not yet known

The memorial was created at a cost of £10,500 and was originally intended to be located in Carlisle but when Carlisle city council called for alterations that would have cost a further £8,000 it was offered a home at the Devlis's Porridge Museum in Eastriggs.

The memorial was launched (sic) by the Princess Royal on 22nd May 2015 (note - not unveiled!) and commemorates animals at war including pigeons. As a pigeon fancier herself, the Queen was one of those who gave a donation towards the memorial. It is the only UK memorial to animals at war outside of London.

It is a polished granite obelisk of five and a half feet in height and depicts horses and pigeons (possibly dogs - the newspaper photo is not clear). The inscription reads:

"IN MEMORY OF
ANIMALS IN WAR
THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED IN 2015
TO COMMEMORATE ANIMALS AND
HOMING CARRIER PIGEONS
WHICH HAVE FALLEN ON THE FIELD
OF BATTLE ALONGSIDE OUR BRAVE
BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH
SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN
DURING WARS AND CONFLICTS
WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM ALL

Apart from the Scottish National War Memorial which reminds us to "Remember also the humble beasts which served and died"

Well remembered, I took the newspaper article at face value. I also know of a memorial to horses who died in the Boer war in Winchester.

We visited the Devil's Prridge Museum yesterday. It's well worth the visit and only costs a fiver! Here's photos of the Animals at War Memorial.

Great photos Mike.

It's nice to see a memorial to the animals.
